DECATHLON: LONG JUMP

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their jumps, and then paste the code [*dice=195+600] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a three-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 682 is read as 6.82 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best jump only, not their average distance or the sum of their jumps.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each jump if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

He looked around. A event he knew he could do good at. It was the long jump and it had two sports combined. Running and jumping. He looked and watched the other athletes go and the could see some decent distances. But it didn't matter because he had to beat them. Then it was his turn. He got to the starting line. Knelt down and started to breath slowly. Then he heard the gun shot.

He was off. He ran as far as he could then leaped toward the dirt.[dice=195+600]

He got a 6.9 meters. Decent he thought. But he knew he could do a lot better. He got back into position for his next run. [dice=195+600]

A 7.17 meters. He cheered slightly in his head. He knew it was good but he looked at the others and knew it was not good enough to beat them. He had one more chance to do good.

He took his position one last time. Looking around he shook his legs and arms. Then he took a deep breath and saw the signal to go. He ran with all his might. He could feel the sweat pouring down his face and his heart racing. Then he felt air, then the ground. [dice=195+600]

A 7.87. He cheered and lifted his hands up in happiness. He knew that was the best so far.

Long jump: also an exceedingly unnecessary skill. Jumping in general seemed useless, unless you were jumping out of the way of a blade slicing at your feet or between two cliffs or something, both highly unlikely occurrences. She'd practiced the long jump more often than she had hurdles, though, because it was far less physically exerting, though after her abysmal performance in hurdles - she'd knocked over three of them! One more and she'd've been disqualified - she couldn't help but wish she'd put just a little more time into them as a training Career.

Topaz had taken this Olympics as an opportunity to do some people-watching; she figured that if they were all going to stare at her, then well, she was going to stare right back. The other redhead in this competition - the massive ginger who looked like a fox on steroids - kept catching her eye, as did the Bryze girl and the kid named Apex, a fitting name because he did indeed look rather like a blond gorilla. In addition to that, she spent quite a bit of time trying to guess which spectators were from which district; the ones that came in bathing suits or tank tops smelling like fish - she was pretty sure she'd wrinkled her nose more in the past twenty-four hours than she'd ever had in her life - were obviously four. The ones with the rippling muscles from spending their lives lifting boulders or whatever other crap they did? Two, obviously. In contrast to all these freaks, the people from One looked pretty normal.

"Topaz Ross, District One!" Her turn. Let's not royally screw this one up, now, shall we? She allowed her feet to carry her to the sand and prepared to jump.

The only experience Nate had had with jumping long distances was in his daring escapades to leap over the spaces between rooftops and buildings. And they weren't even serious attempts, more like half-drunk actions, spun along by the cheers of his peers, just to prove to his friends that he could do the mad and seemingly impossible tasks they all joked about doing. Like he had to prove to them that he was worthy of their attention, when really, it should be the opposite way around.

But he had found, with his time in District Four, that the audiences were a lot like his friends. To keep them entertained, you had to give them what they wanted - a good show. Like the tributes gaining sponsors, you had to do the best. Be the best. Except no-one had to die here, they could all go home again to their families, and he liked that. The reassurance that he'd see his mother again - but he felt that if he came home empty-handed, his father would be slightly disappointed. Already bursting with pride that his son was competing for his District, it was never quite enough for Mr. Graives.

But Nate wasn't here for his father, he was here for himself. So he'd pretend that the sand at the end of the track was a gaping chasm of concrete that promised his body to meet concrete if he missed, and hurl himself as far as he could fly across the sandy pit.

Four's next task to do was Long Jump - something he trained as a career. He trained mostly in agility while he was a career, something he was good at, and agility included jumping long distances. He felt that he was going to do good, maybe even better then he did in the past few events where he did decent. Maybe even decent enough to earn a medal. Four hoped to at least win bronze for his decathlon, and maybe even for the weight lifting he was also participating in. He did practice with a flail often, he did. The Panem Olympics were the perfect time for him to show them what he got, And maybe, just maybe if Four entered the games he could be known as the guy who got a medal in the Olympics. He hoped to show that he had skill, and wasn't just some random boy from District 2 who nobody took second glances at. The boy who entered Olympics and won a medal. It's the time to show them what you've got, Four, he said to himself before racing off to the field where he would do Long Jump.

Many Capitol people escorted him to the field, and while he was being raced there Four took this opportunity to look at the spectators, the people lucky enough that they could watch the Olympians live. All eyes were on him as he finally made his way to the long jump. The blonde teenager took one last breath, before he started running, and jumped as high as he could.

Scarlette was on a roll, and it was no secret. Ever since she'd placed so highly in the javelin throw, her performance had improved times ten. Everybody was beginning to turn her way, which was exactly what she wanted. She could just see the look of shock on Julian's face after he'd seen the last few scores she'd achieved, or Clarity's of envy back home. District Four was...different. It seemed to peaceful for her taste, too quiet. Comparing it to the life she was forced to live, the contrast was incredible. She wasn't sure if she'd be able to change her life to something so easy, and that was exactly how she thought the citizens of district Four lived their lives. Easy.

If she wouldn't have felt so on top of her game, she might've even punched the person nearest to her after she realized that the next event was the long jump. How in the hell had she qualified for this thing in the first place? Maybe it was from all of the things that didn't involve having long legs, like shot put, or discus. She wasn't really the strongest person in the world, so maybe it was something else. She had no idea, really. She took a deep breath, clearing her head before running at full speed. Speed. Maybe that was what had gotten her nominated.

Damn, Scarlette Bryze had just pulled herself up to second place, where only Topaz was currently ahead of her. Typical, considering that she'd done better in everything other than a select few. She silently made a promise to do better than her in the next event, because she was beginning to tire of being bested by her.

Long jump was one of Apex’s two favorite events when it came to competing in the Decathlon. His legs were strong and flexible; he had trained to be extremely dexterous and agile, and long jump was an event that could take advantage of Apex’s natural athleticism. The others were doing far better than he thought, especially two of the other kids from his district. William Wilson had the high score, setting the bar for everyone else, a bar that none managed to reach.

Topaz had the next highest, and Apex suddenly felt as though he might not as well as he thought. He made his way to the line when they called his name. He ran to the line and leapt, tossing his own body like a rag doll, hitting the mark with his heels. He had tied Topaz for second, and hoped that would be a good enough score to keep him amongst the leaders in the decathlon.[/size]

Average. It was the simplest term Locust could use to describe her progress, including both her scores and the amount of cheers she received from the oddly-dressed spectators adorned with every color of the rainbow. While she considered her one-hundred meter sprint a small success, her performances in both the shot put and discus throw - two events requiring toned arms and perfect tossing formation - were mediocre and not worth the attention from overly-ecstatic capitolites and audience members from her supporting district. Only one personal victory had been achieved during these past events, and that was her tossing the metal sphere father than a Bryze. They were supposedly a few of the fiercest and most ruthless careers in all of Panem, and the thought of beating one of them in an event brought a smile to the mischievous girl’s lips. Locust Lovelace, stronger than a Bryze? She reveled in the idea. It was time for district four to expose their talents and bewilder Panem with their power once and for all. District one and two? Please.

Standing before the muttering crowds she shook the nerves out of her trembling legs and stared at the narrow path of sand in front of her. The long jump seemed like such a pointless event, sprinting with all of one’s might just to leap into a bunch of dirt - a skill nobody really needed to survive - but one she could perhaps score higher in if she didn’t screw up. The contestant before her, of course, was Topaz Ross. Every time. It was a disadvantage being compared to somebody so adored by Games-obsessed capitolites, especially when she had to enter the field right after her performance. She couldn’t complain too much, however - performing second was more desirable than performing last. Bearing the position of the last competitor was difficult, she imagined, what with the audience comparing that player to everyone else that previously performed, not to mention by that time a lot of the spectators minds had grown tired of watching the event. She didn’t know who held the position of last on the roster, but whoever it was, it must’ve sucked for them.

She pushed those thoughts aside and cleared her mind. It was time to focus. Time to raise the stakes and nudge herself out of the average ranking and bump herself up if at all possible. I hope you’re watching, Priscilla.

Tiger was unsure about the actual standings going into the long jump, but he decided he wasn't going to worry about them very much. His mind wasn't geared toward mathematics, but he reasoned that since he'd won the 100m dash and had done average on the other events so far, he was probably somewhere around the middle. The good news was that his better events — javelin, long jump, pole vault — were still ahead of him, so he still had a good shot at catching back up and medaling.

Long jump was a simple enough concept, though. Run for twelve steps, then launch yourself as far as you could into a pit of sand. If you fall, fall forward, because they measure to the back of where you land. In theory, it was quite simple, though it wasn't something Tiger had practiced too intently — after all, when was he going to actually apply jumping to combat? Perhaps if he was fighting someone on a rooftop, or chasing someone on some jagged cliff. Other than that, it seemed pretty impractical.

But who was he to question the competition? Tiger was just here to show up, to do the best that he could, and maybe, if it worked out well for him, earn a medal and make his family proud. As large District One families went, they had less notoriety than those that had produced tributes recently — the Morenos, the Lightwoods — which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, until you accounted for the fact that the more fame that was associated with a surname, the more sponsorship money poured in when the family finally produced a tribute. Not that Tiger necessarily wanted his siblings — or himself, really — to participate in the Games, but he was kidding himself if he didn't think that one of the dozen Rex children wouldn't make it through their childhood without having their name drawn from a glass bowl.

The Games, of course, were fairly irrelevant at the moment; this competition was harmless. Wasn't it? Nobody was dying, nobody was getting too severely wounded. A couple of scraped up knees that resulted from knocked over hurdles, a black eye or two from wrestling, from boxing, maybe a twisted ankle at the worst from running or from gymnastics. Harmless. Careers saw worse injuries all the time at home. These Olympics were low-stakes. That didn't mean he wouldn't give it his all as he sprinted toward the sand pit — which he did — but it certainly took a bit of the pressure off, which may have actually made it easier to perform.
