life is bigger, it's bigger than you, and you are not me
the lengths that I will go to
deeds cannot dream what dreams can do
—time is a tree(this life one leaf)
but love is the sky and i am for you
just so long and long enough
—time is a tree(this life one leaf)
but love is the sky and i am for you
just so long and long enough
He'd been waiting for this day for a long, long time. Longer than they had actually been dating. For all that time in between their first heat date and the day he had taken her out to the lake house, Maverick had wondered. He had not pined, not groveled or made himself into a hermit. But she had always been there, the moon of his thoughts.
He had watched every incoming video of her he could, generally preferring the unedited footage. And that was as close as he got, for years. He still wasn't sure, three months after they had truly begun to date, what had changed her mind. He considered it luck, a karma that was owed to him for his lackluster start in life, and perhaps to her as well. He hoped he made her happy. Maverick was about to test that theory as best as anyone knew how.
The last two days had been busy for Topaz with the Olympics, which was quite fortunate for him. He had often considered and where and when would be best. Somewhere unique, certainly, and the inaugural Olympics seemed like just the place. It had been a scramble to coordinate with the Capitol jeweler, but not impossible, once he had given his real name instead of an alias. All sorts of doors were open to the Boyfriend of Topaz Ross these days. He was careful with how he used that, ever aware that some day he might truly need a favor. His patience had paid off, and in no time at all they were on the train to Four.
Really he could not have planned the circumstances any better than if he had used all of his connections in the Capitol. The weather was cooperative, warm but breezy along the coast. The spirits of the district were high, enthusiasm wafting on the breeze. And Topaz had enough duties that gave Maverick time to fine tune his plans, to see her only in brief flashes so that he never felt too anxious around her.
On his own time, though, when he wasn't actively scoping out places, he felt doubt coil in his stomach. No doubt for himself; in fact Maverick had never been more sure about anything in his entire life. Literally. He had considered it, dug up memories from his earliest childhood and thought of things long forgotten. He had always been a man with a purpose, but never had that purpose so fulfilled him. No, what he worried about was Topaz. He was quite sure that she had come to care for him, too, that she enjoyed his company, that they were well suited to the daily ins and outs of life. But was it enough?
Could anything ever be?
In the end it didn't matter how much he worried or speculated about her feelings. He was going to try, and try his best the first time. Over the weeks since the decision fully materialized, he had often thought of allowing himself an easier out. Asking her in the soft light of dawn, on a stroll through the Capitol's parks, just before they made love. All of these would be more private, more intimate. And while he didn't want to ask her in a broadcast to all of Panem, he wanted to do Topaz justice.
Despite all he wanted to do to prove that, Maverick was also not a man possessed of patience. Yes he had waited to date her, but now that they were together, he could no longer tolerate the thought of being without her. More planning certainly would have yielded a better moment, but he was ready. So ready. He'd spent the morning preparing the exact spot, practically choking on nerves, and had already sweated through one shirt. But it would be okay, he kept telling himself. Today is the day, but it is only one day, another day with Topaz.
He chanted this mantra internally through the noon heat. It was just after another round of events, late in the afternoon, when Maverick stood on the grassy knoll between the Village and the Park. He'd sent a detail - a stylist from Four, a beige palomino, and a guide from One to inform Topaz of her next duty: a brief advertisement for the Games, shot in the Village. The stylist would seem appropriate, as well as the entourage, but it was nothing that would attract too much attention. He hoped.
He stood ready, hands at his hips, outfit carefully chosen to be at once stylish and understated. After all, he wanted to be her moon now, to let Topaz bask in the sunlight. Because she deserved the world, and Maverick intended to give it to her.
