Appearance:
Vertigo is the definition of trying to hard. Like many of the Rex children, she was blessed with good genes, although hers came out darker than most. Hair so dark brown it is almost black, skin that burnishes in the summer sun. Thankfully her eyes are as light as gemstones, the color of the ocean in the shallows, shifting from teal to jade and back again. And this is a naturally beautiful part of herself, and she is quite vain about her eyes.Personality:
But most of the rest of her has been enhanced, as much as a fifteen year old girl on a shoestring allowance in One can be enhanced, anyhow. Hair dyed a deep ebony or a fairer blonde. Makeup dug into her skin to produce clear lines. She has plans, though, to make these lines permanent. To put herself under a knife as soon as she can afford to do so. Because there is so much she wants to change.
The widening of her hips, for example. Too much fat has already accumulated. And while she has one of the biggest racks in her year, her breasts could always be bigger. Her stomach could be tighter.
She does what she can to bide her time. She maintains a Career regime to keep her body as trim as she can, curves notwithstanding. She stretches three times daily to keep herself limber and supple. She is easily the most flexible girl in school, and Vertigo's not shy about sharing that information.
She is a doll, one to be taken care of, one who cleans and grooms herself at every opportunity. Sweating in the Career center is easily the biggest downside to her training, but she manages as it helps her work off those big Rex family meals.

"Guy chaser" is just the starting point. Vertigo has her sights set on greater things - on famous things. People, actually. She's more self-aware than others would give her credit for (or her mouth would belie) and she's already fully aware that being a trophy wife is the only way she's going to be able to maintain her lifestyle. Well, that or win the Games, but given her lineup of siblings, her chances seem pretty dim. Raja would definitely kick her ass if Vertigo got reaped. But the point is: Vertigo doesn't just train because she's a competitive Career. She trains because it makes her young body supple, desirable. She's too young and impressionable to have really decided what sort of person she wants to pair up with, so long as they keep her in the latest fashion and hair products. She'd probably kick a few perks Raja's way, maybe, if she wasn't so clever all the time.History:
Vertigo's diary is full of her snark and how much it hurts and how much she envies her sister. She's probably the only one in the family, though. Most of her brothers and sisters have better things to worry about. Like going through her black underwear drawer. There's no privacy to be had in a house with so many siblings, and yet it bothers Vertigo, as much as it excites her. She complains about it, but there's no lock on said drawer or diary. She crazes the attention as much as she resents what it takes to get it.
And that's the problem with Vertigo. She makes it hard for mostly anyone to like herunless you're only interested in her body. She takes very little responsibility for her flamboyant actions, and expects her family to come to her rescue. But they won't always be there, whether or not she ends up in the arena. It will take something that traumatic to make Vertigo really understand the simple truth: every Career in Panem is out for himself.
Vertigo came into the world halfway through Mr. and Mrs. Rex's lovefest. This guaranteed two things: she would be a Career, and she would be lost somewhere in the middle. There were already plenty of able overachievers, and at least one underachiever. What else is there, in a Career family? Vertigo didn't actively set out to be the gossipy, attention-seeking slut she's become, but it was one of the available ways of differentiating herself from the beginning. After all, she only has one older sister, and Raja isn't going to win a beauty pageant any time soon.Codeword: Odair
So Vertigo took it upon herself to be the girly-girl, the little angel, until a slew of younger girls undermined that plan and made her just one of many jewel-eyes in the Rex household. She was just old enough, on the verge of tween, to realize that the rug had been ripped out from beneath her. Her parents didn't want a cute little girl; they wanted a victor.
Turns out, there's more than one way to win a Games. Vertigo is no great strategist. In fact most of her ideas about the Games have come from her trainers, which remind her that love interests play well with the crowds. That love can break just as easily as it can lift someone up. In the end though it's Topaz and Aesop and Klaus that make it to the end, or very near. Better to be strong and in love.
So she fell into line, at least as far the Career center is concerned. School is pretty much a lost cause; Vertigo would rather be writing poetry (which is steadily improving) in her diary, or gossiping. But the Games training matters, because that seems like a very real possibility, given how much her family talks about Games. It also seems like the best place to find a husband or wife to raise her social standing, to pay for those expensive cosmetic surgeries. So she's willing to play by the rules. For now.
