Fynn Mako - District 4

The first signs of activity were the sounds of whitecaps crashing against the shore followed by the calls and splashes of seagulls as they dove into the ocean for their morning catch. These sounds preceded the gradual fade of darkness and appearance of light in Fynn’s vision. He rubbed his eyes to clear up the rest as he began to fully come into consciousness. He awoke in the damp sand left by the early morning tide and sat up to take in the beauty around him. The clear sunny sky hanging above the vast blue ocean combined with the warm spring air and cool sea breeze brought instant peace and calm to Fynn. This truly was his home.

Fynn looked about, trying to gather himself and come out of the confusion of a deep sleep. He must have fallen asleep on the beach after a long evening of fishing. He noticed the empty basket and fishing pole beside him and couldn’t help but envy the seagulls as they continued to feast. Why do they have it so easy? Fynn had fished for nearly four hours last night and had come up with a few measly pogeys that were too tiny to make even a bite of food. Depressed by his failure and stiff from not moving for so long, Fynn stood up and stretched, then turned to walk a ways down the beach to loosen and wake up.

That was when he noticed someone standing knee-deep in the surf, looking out over the ocean. She looked slightly younger than Fynn but fairly tall for her apparent age. Her voluptuous brown hair reached her shoulders which Fynn noticed were very toned for a girl, but not in any way masculine. She had long legs and a good feminine build, and Fynn decided she was an overall attractive girl. However, it was the profile view of her face that really got his attention. He had seen this girl before.

It was several weeks before in the late winter/early spring, and Fynn was in his smaller boat, only about fifty or so yards offshore. He was fishing, and as he continued to cast out and heave in nets, he began to hear sudden giggles and other noises. He stopped for a moment to look out back to the shore. He noticed a group of teenage girls, slightly younger or close to the same age as him, staring at him and laughing. Fynn had experienced with this kind of thing many times before. He knew most girls found him attractive and was used to this attention, but he rarely shared the feeling back toward the girl. Not amused by their immaturity and slightly annoyed, he was about to turn back to his work when he noticed the brown hair, toned arms, and long legs. However, it wasn’t her looks that made the girl intriguing, it was her demeanor. Unlike the other girls, she wasn’t obsessing over and drooling at Fynn. She seemed uninterested, possibly daydreaming. This amused Fynn. It was nice to find someone who was mature and seemed interested in more important things than just guys or shopping or gossiping.

It was this same girl that Fynn looked at now. She hadn’t even noticed him yet. He began to walk closer, wondering how long it would take until she heard him, if in fact she did at all.

The first time Stirling Raycroft could remember seeing the ocean, she had only been three. Her parents had brought her to the beach, picked her up, and walked out into the water until it was up to their knees, swinging her back and forth by her arms so her toes would skim the water. She could still remember how much she’d laugh, and how her parents would laugh with her. They never laughed that way anymore. The fifteen years of raising a kid must have tired them out too much to allow them to laugh like they used to. Stirling would give up almost anything to get one of those days back, to be small and to not have a care in the world.

Stir was standing on that very same beach, with the water up to her knees the same way her parents used to stand, under the very same cloudless bright blue sky. She was wearing short jean shorts over her bikini bottoms and a light blue bikini top, an outfit that definitely showed off her long legs and toned shoulders. Her long wavy brown hair reached her shoulders, bringing out her warm dark brown eyes framed by long dark eyelashes. Her turquoise flip flops lay abandoned on the sand behind her, and her bare toes were buried in the wet earth beneath the water.

It was a while before she heard him, realized he was looking at her and walking towards her. She was staring out towards the sea, the wind in her hair, daydreaming as usual. She heard the brushing sound of feet padding across sand, and she turned to see what had made the noise. It was not a what, but a him, that faced her.

He was tall with defined muscles and short spiky brownish-blonde hair. He had tanned skin and a clear complexion flawed only by a light scar just above his left eyebrow that continued to just below his cheekbone. But what were really noticeable were his eyes. Those bright ocean blue eyes that were both inviting and… familiar.

She had seen those eyes before. Stirling could remember it clearly. It was in the early spring, a warm day, and Stir had been at the beach here with some of her friends. He was fishing in a boat, and he would occasionally look back at them. Her friends were all giggling and whispering to each other about how cute he was, how muscular he was. And one of her friends had nudged her, whispering, “Stir, Stir, check out his eyes! Aren’t they gorgeous?” Stirling, of course, was forced to look. She had to admit to herself, he wasn’t bad looking. But, being the kind of girl that doesn’t judge based on looks, she didn’t ogle at him. He was attractive, sure, but he might have been a total jerk. She wasn’t as boy-crazy as the rest of her friends, so she resumed her daydreaming.

She thought she should probably say something.“Hey,” she said casually. That’s all she could manage. Stir had never been much of a conversationalist when it came to people she didn’t know very well. Probably because of all the time she spent daydreaming.

Fynn was almost directly behind the girl when she turned. He must have made a loud enough noise in the sand to get her attention. She looked in his direction and almost instantly, their eyes met. Fynn stared into hers, as she stared back into his. Those dark, chocolate-brown eyes were locked on to his bright, ocean blue ones. They were silent for a few seconds, but it seemed much longer to Fynn. It was as if she was looking through his eyes into a vision of a different time or place.

"Hey," she uttered, and the trance was broken. It took a few seconds for Fynn to realize she was actually speaking to him. He wasn't the most sociable person. He was much more comfortable speaking to older acquaintances, so for a moment he was unsure what to say. Feeling somewhat stupid for lack of a better way to reply, he simply said, "Hey."

Fynn wasn't sure why he seemed so clueless on how to talk to this girl. Usually teenage girls did not have this drugging affect on him. Maybe it was because she was different. Just that short moment that their gazes were locked on to each other was enough to tell Fynn that much. It was as if he didn't know what to think, but his body was moving itself toward her. He stopped a few yards out into the water, wondering if she felt the same drawing effect towards him.

“Hey,” mirrored the boy. Stirling accidentally began staring into his eyes again, and she found herself entranced, remembering that early spring day. She was so busy thinking about the past that she didn’t realize he was walking toward her, or that she was drifting closer to him as well. He was now a few yards out into the water, and the waves lapped against their legs. She felt somehow connected to this boy, and she was drawn to him for some reason. Stirling wondered if he felt the same way about her. Maybe he isn’t a jerk, she thought. Maybe he’s different.

She felt the urge to say something, to communicate with him. Stirling had only said one word to him, but she felt as if she had known him longer. She was too absorbed in his eyes, though, and she couldn’t think of anything to say. She was a girl with a one-track mind.

What if he thought she was being creepy? Stir didn’t want to freak him out by staring, so she tried to turn her attention to something else. It wasn’t hard to decide on something, once she noticed a little fuzzy bumblebee buzzing around his hair. Stirling had always loved honeybees, and when she was younger she would plant flowers with her mother in the small flowerbed by her house. They were so small and yellow and fuzzy, never stinging you unless they were stepped on. They were what made the flowers grow, bringing them pollen so they could bloom and flourish. Stirling remembered how her mother would hold her hand out slowly to the bee, and put the other hand behind it so her two hands formed sort of a right angle. Then she’d stroke the bee’s yellow fuzz slowly and gently with her index finger before letting it fly away again.

Stir laughed. “Hey,” she said once again. She then stepped forward and reached over the boy’s head (which was hard, considering how tall he was) and performed the same motion her mother used to, bringing the bee close to her and stroking its fuzz with her finger. Stir didn’t realize she was standing only about a foot and a half away from the blue-eyed boy. She then slowly lifted her hands up and the bee buzzed away. She watched it as it flew out of view.

Stirling then realized that this may have seemed a little weird, and her arms slowly dropped back to her sides. “You, um… had a bee in your hair,”[/i] she said, and she couldn't help but continue smiling. "You know, most people think bumblebees are dangerous,"[/i] she said, meeting his gaze again, "but they're actually harmless. Once they sting you, they die, you see. So they won't bother you if you're gentle with them."[/i][/color]

Fynn couldn’t help but be a little anxious when the brown-eyed girl began to move closer to him. It was as if she was pulled toward him by his eyes, they were all she was concentrated on. She was only feet away from him when her gaze broke suddenly, and her eyes began to move all around his head. That was when he heard a buzzing noise in his ear and realized there was a bee flying around his head.

Fynn wasn’t very fond of bees. It’s not that he was afraid of their sting, he just found them uninteresting. Fynn loved nature, but he was more intrigued by bigger, more complex animals, especially sharks or other big fish. He remembered the time when his curiosity of ocean creatures ended up harming him. He was twelve and free diving in a coral reef when he noticed a sting ray. He wanted to see what it felt like so he gently stroked its back. The stingray was startled, and it whipped its barb in Fynn’s face, slicing a gash in his left brow and cheek. Thinking about this brought a little tingling sensation to the scar he now had where the ray cut him.

The girl then reached over his head, and Fynn felt a little awkward because he was so much taller and it seemed like she was swatting at his head. Instead, she pulled her hand back with the bee gentle resting on it, and she began to pet it. After a few seconds, she let it go. Fynn was a bit amazed by how graceful and smooth she performed that simple act. “You, um… had a bee in your hair,” she said. "You know, most people think bumblebees are dangerous," she continued, "but they're actually harmless. Once they sting you, they die, you see. So they won't bother you if you're gentle with them."

He didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t really that well educated on bees. “Uh, thanks.” He smiled at her. Now Fynn wasn’t in any way a bragger, but he was aware that he had a nice smile. He had never had braces or anything, being unable to afford them, but he was lucky to have straight, pearly white teeth. She was smiling back at him, but for some reason she didn’t show her teeth and kept her mouth closed. Still, Fynn thought her closed smile was cute in a way. He new that if he was going to get to know more about this girl that he seemed so attracted to, he would have to begin to say more than single-word responses. “You know that was really cool what you just did there. Where’d you learn that from?”

((Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I was super tired when I typed this))

"Uh, thanks," the boy said, and Stir still hoped he wasn't weirded out by the whole bee thing. Most people didn't like bees. And then he smiled at her. She liked that he showed his teeth when he smiled; he had nice teeth. They were a clear white, and they were perfectly straight. There were a lot of people who were afraid to show their teeth when they smiled, Stirling included. She was self-conscious about her teeth because even though they were straight, they were sort of an off-white color instead of a pearly white color. She rarely ever showed her teeth unless she was laughing really hard, and she kept her mouth closed when she smiled. Stir concluded that this boy had a cute smile.

“You know that was really cool what you just did there. Where’d you learn that from?” he asked. Oh, good. She hadn't freaked him out. " My mother," she answered. "When I was little, she had a small flower bed outside in our yard. She used to let me help her plant flowers in it in the spring. Every time a bumblebee came past us, she'd do that. I asked her to teach me how, and she did. I was scared at first, but then after I did it a few times I wasn't so frightened."

She paused, remembering. Her mother never went out in the garden anymore. Stir guessed she just became tired of it. But Stirling still went out to the garden and planted flowers every early spring. She felt somehow obliged to it, like it was her duty or something since her mother never planted flowers anymore.

"You know," she continued, "I used to think bees were scary and mean. But when I was little, my mom always used to tell me that if we didn't have bees, we wouldn't have flowers. They pollinate the plants so they can grow. Bees are really important, if you think about it." Stir then realized that she might have been rambling, as she often did. She also wondered if she was talking too much about herself. She didn't know anything about this boy yet, not even his name. She should probably ask something about him, but she wasn't good at making conversations and she couldn't think of what to ask. She ended up just silently waiting for him to do something, thinking about her mom and the bees and the garden. She seriously needed to get over her problem with spacing out and daydreaming.

((its alright. i completely understand the feeling. but it wasnt bad at all))

Fynn listened to her as she told him about her mom. This made him remember his mom. She had blue eyes like him and long brown hair with a beautiful smile. He suddenly stopped. Thinking about his mom only brought pain to him. And besides, he wasn’t paying attention to this girl who was trying to be nice and make conversation with him. He quickly caught up with what she was saying so that it wasn’t obvious that he wasn’t listening at the beginning.

She finished talking without really asking him anything, so he guessed she was leaving it up to him to keep the conversation going. He thought about talking about his mom, but he hated doing that because he didn’t like when others felt sorry for him. Eventually he would tell her, but now was not the time. He didn’t even know the girl’s name yet.

Her name! Well that was something to start with obviously. Fynn wondered if her name might spark something in his memory that made her seem so familiar. Other than that day on the beach, he didn’t think he had ever met her before. Fynn also realized how much she was talking about bees. She must have been really into nature, which was good because Fynn was also. He didn’t know much about bees, flowers, and gardens, but at least it was a start.

“You know that’s really interesting. I never thought about it, but I guess they are pretty important. I mean, if you like flowers. Anyway, I don’t think I caught your name yet….”

The boy asked for Stirling's name, and she replied, "Oh, yeah. Sorry. My name's Stirling. Stirling Raycroft. My mother told me I was named after a castle in a long long ago place that was called Scotland. " She wondered what a castle looked like. She had only heard the stories her mother had told her, and those were only stories of stories Stirling's grandmother had told her mother. All she knew was that they were made of stone, and that they were really big buildings.

She imagined herself living in a castle. She was wearing an elaborate and beautiful gown, and she was surrounded by servants and admirers and suitors. Did people even live in castles? Stir had always pictured people living in castles, mainly wealthy people. If a castle was as huge as she imagined it, she figured someone rich probably owned it.

Stir remembered she was still talking to this boy, and that she still didn't know his name. "I didn't catch your name, either. What was it?" Learning his name obviously seemed to be a good way to get to know more about him. She still couldn't figure out why she felt so drawn to this boy, besides the obvious fact that he was attractive on the surface.

The girl said her name was Stirling. Stirling....to Fynn that reminded him of something shiny. Maybe because it sounded like sterling silver. Well, it fit her well. There was something about her that was just radiant. Fynn had barely talked to her, but he already decided he liked her as a person. She was definitely different, but in a good way. Fynn was different anyway, so maybe they fit well together.

She asked him his name in return. "My name's Fynn Mako." Fynn really liked his name. He last name, Mako, was the same as a mako shark, a creature that really fascinated him. Mako sharks were the fastest shark of any, reaching speeds of 20mph. They were also the second most dangerous, only to great whites. Fynn had actually swam close to one out deep in the ocean and also caught one while fishing. His first name, Fynn, of course sounded like "fin," and fish and sharks had always been his favorite animals. So basically Fynn's name fit perfectly for a District 4 fisherman.

The boy told her his name was Fynn. "Fynn," she mused, smiling. "I like it." Stir thought it was a nice name, short and cute. It made her think of fish, which she loved. Stirling loved nature and the ocean and its inhabitants had always fascinated her. She often found herself staring out at the ocean, imagining an entirely different world under the waves. She wondered what it looked like down at the bottom of the ocean, and she always pictured it being very colorful, with all kinds of strange fish she had never seen before.

And his last name, Mako. Like the shark. Mako sharks were really cool animals. Stirling had always been fascinated by sharks, and Makos were particularly interesting. She liked the fact that they could adapt to almost any water temperature, this meant they could survive almost anywhere in the world. All in all, she supposed Fynn Mako had a cool name, and an appropriate one for a citizen of District 4 at that.

Stirling had always liked her name, too. It felt somehow magical and connected to the past. She wondered what Scotland had looked like, and what the castle had looked like. Though she often thought about it, she couldn't even begin to fathom what life had been like back then, before there were 12 districts. Heck, it was even before there were 13 districts. She wondered if they had a president back then, too.

And what was Fynn doing out here? Was he just walking on the beach when he saw Stirling? Or was he here for some other reason? She decided to ask. "So," she asked, inclining her head so she could see his face, "What brings you to the beach, Fynn Mako? If you don't mind me asking."

"Fynn, I like it," she said. There she goes again with that cute little grin of hers Fynn thought. He thought about it, and he and Stirling were really hitting it off well. Then he thought again and realized that still they had barely talked, no more than ten minutes. But then again, just looking into her eyes made Fynn feel as if he knew her so much more. It was as if her dark brown eyes told her story for her.

Then Stirling asked what brought him to the beach. When he thought about it, he couldn't remember why he was there, but only for a moment. He looked down at his bare torso and damp shorts and suddenly remembered his long night of hopeless fishing, then crashing on the beach because he was too exhausted to walk back into town.

"Actually, I slept out here. I was up fishing all last night and when I stopped to take a break, I fell asleep in the sand. I didn't wake up untill this morning right before i found you. It's not the first time I sleep on the beach. I tend to do it a lot, sometimes even on purpose just because I love being out here."

"It doesn't sound like it would be very comfortable," Stir said. Fynn had told her he had slept outside. Didn't he worry about sleeping out here? What would happen if he slept too close to the water? Maybe the riptide would bury him in sand. Or maybe he'd be carried off on the waves to some weird deserted island or something. Talk about drifting off to sleep.

She wondered why he had been fishing out here so late. Of course, Stir went fishing all the time, but not at that late hour. Was he doing it for sport, or was he here to catch fish to sell? Or maybe he was just hungry. There were many families in District 4 who didn't have a lot of money and had to rely on the ocean for food. Maybe Fynn belonged to one of those families. Stir decided not to ask; it would have been kind of rude and the last thing she wanted to do was hurt Fynn's feelings.

All this thinking about fishing brought back memories of Stir's childhood. She remembered the first time her father had taught her how to fish, in a small freshwater pond near their house. Stirling had been 6, and she was afraid to bait her hook because she thought the worm was gross. She had only caught a little blue gill that day, but she was happy with it anyway. Her father showed her how to gut it and clean it, and her mother showed her how to cook it. They had blue gill and catfish for dinner that night, and though it wasn't the best-tasting meal in the world, Stir thought it was delicious. Ever since that day, Stir had loved the water and everything about it and beneath it.

"I understand what you mean, though," she said suddenly. "About being out here. I love it too. I come out here all the time." She paused, thinking. "It's just so... peaceful, you know? It's a good place to think. It's kind of sad, people don't ever seem to take the time to enjoy nature anymore, you know?"

In Stir's opinion, she and Fynn were getting along really well. She could tell now that he definitely wasn't a jerk like she had earlier thought possible. He was actually really cute, with his deep ocean blue eyes and his nearly perfect smile and his blondish-brown hair. Even though they had only spoken for about ten minutes, Stir felt like she had known him longer, as if they had met somewhere before besides that day in the early spring.

"It doesn't sound like it would be very comfortable," Stirling said. Fynn didn't think it was that uncomfortable, but her never really took time to notice. Usually when he fell asleep on the beach, he was so exhausted, he didn't care if he was sleeping on nails. And besides, the sand probably wasn't much worse than a bunk on his boat or the cot at his house that he slept on.

"I understand what you mean, though," she continued. "About being out here. I love it too. I come out here all the time." She paused. "It's just so... peaceful, you know? It's a good place to think. It's kind of sad, people don't ever seem to take the time to enjoy nature anymore, you know?" Fynn thought about what she said. It was true. People in Panem never took time to relax and appreciate the world around them. They were either caught up in food, clothing, and luxuries of the Capitol, or they were too busy working their butts off to provide for their family and the Capitol's needs. Sure some people were in out nature while working, but they weren't enjoying it. For example, the people of District 7 probably hated trees and the woods by the end of the day because they were constantly working there. Fynn appreciated the fact that he could still enjoy the ocean while he worked in it. he actually liked his job.

"Yeah, you're right. Everyone seems so caught up in all the stupidity of the Capitol. Well at least in my opinion, it's stupid. To me a day of fishing or hunting or just being out on the water or hiking through the woods beats any of the games and entertainment the Capitol provides, especially the Hunger Games. It makes me sick that people would watch kids kill each other rather than have some fun and adventure out in the woods or on the water." Fynn stopped. He was starting to heat up and get angry. He didn't want to seem too radical and crazy and scare Stirling away. She might have really liked the Capitol or enjoyed watching the Hunger Games for all he knew, but he doubted it.

Fynn calmed down and just let his thoughts go. "Sorry for going off on my little rant there. Let's just say I have my reasons for not liking our government."

((Sorry for my lateness. I've been really busy with homework since school started again.))

Fynn began talking about how he thought the capital was stupid, and Stirling looked at Fynn empathetically as he said this, and she shook her head when he apologized for ranting. "No, don't be sorry. I know what you mean." She paused, making sure she chose her words carefully. "It's just... Disgusting, really. How much some people actually enjoy the Hunger Games. I can't imagine how those kids' families must be feeling. And the kids themselves. They must be terrified, all of them. I can't believe the government would do that, make all those children, some of them only just 12, fight each other like that. It's just sick." Stir's face was heating up, and tears threatened to well in her eyes. She was a very emotional person."Those kids, 23 of them will never grow up or get married or get a job, they'll never get to live their lives, and what did they do to deserve it?... Nothing." She sighed, realizing she was ranting just like Fynn had, and then she laughed a little.

"Sorry. What I mean to say is, I guess I don't like the government either. I just wish..." She trailed off, not finishing her sentence because Fynn might have thought her wish was a little strange. Stir didn't usually get upset about things - she was a pretty easygoing person - but she'd always been mad at the Capitol for the Hunger Games. The people in the lower districts already suffered enough-sometimes even little children died of starvation-while the people in the Capitol stuffed their faces at three to four meals a day.

Now that Stir thought about it, she realized how lucky she was to always have enough to eat. She had never gone hungry before, and she'd always had clothes to wear and art supplies to paint with. She knew that there were other families in the district that weren't as fortunate, and they had to depend on the ocean for their food or they'd go hungry. Maybe that's why Fynn had been fishing. Perhaps he haf one of those families. She decided not to ask; she didn't want to offend him.

Again, though she had a lot of not-very-nice things to say about the capitol, she didn't like to voice her opinions about it. She usually kept her mouth shut and locked her grievances up in the cupboards in the back of her mind. But she felt like she could trust Fynn for some reason. Besides, he was nice to talk to; Stir liked that he was a good listener and that he was polite.

Listening to what Stirling said really made Fynn think about things. She was right, the Hunger Games was a death sentence for twenty-three innocent children, most of whose families were suffering enough.

Fynn knew his family by no means was wealthy. They got by, mostly because Fynn always worked hard, but also because they were a strong and close family. If one of them was killed in the Games, Fynn didn't know what would happen to them. Losing another family member to any of them would be disastrous.

That was why, even though he hated to Games, Fynn allowed his brothers to train. He had done it when he was young and he knew it would increase their survival chances if they would be chosen in the reaping. Fynn would volunteer if any one of his siblings or close family friends was chosen, but he only had one year left at seventeen, so he could not protect them much longer.

Fynn wondered what Stirling was about to say when she stopped herself at "I just wish..." He figured she might be worried of how he would react, but he guessed that he would probably agree. "You wish what?" he said with a grin, trying to encourage her to open up to him.
