Phoetine Chevalier
Age: 15 years old
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 08
Appearance:look into the broken mirror on the wall.
Standing at five foot, three inches tall, Phoetine shares many of the same attributes as other girls from her same district. With quick instincts and fast hands, she was made to create clothing and textiles with fabrics of many kinds. She has a very slim build, with slight curves trailing downwards from her breasts, and less prominent hips. Her skin is hydrated and soft, with small hairs frosting her arms and legs, and on more sacred areas of her body. Prone to peeling, Phoetine tries to stay out of the sunlight most of the time, rather spending her days in her family’s home and shop.
Her hands are less manicured, often only being trimmed with rusty nail clippers twice a month. With the family business in mind, she usually keeps her nails short so they don’t distract her while she’s working. The tips of her fingers are calloused and rough from years of learning to sew and poking herself constantly with the thin needles. The lines on her fingers are very faded, with the slight pattern of swirls that trail down to her wrist. Covering her arms are small scars that have come from multiple pricks of needles, like her hands, and bites from the bugs that have come from the nearby forestry areas.
Her hair is rather long, trailing down to her waist when let free, but Phoetine often keeps it up in a fish tail braid, falling to the left side of her head. It helps keep her hair from getting in her face while she’s working or trying to accomplish her daily chores. Unfortunately, after leaving the braid in for a while, her hair turns from dead straight to frizzy and wavy. The color of her hair is rather like a gradient, fading from an ashy brown to a reddish brown hue. Her pale face is framed by small pieces of hair that fall from the crown, defining her jawline and face shape. Her nose is curved downwards, and round towards the end, with light freckles dancing around the tip.
Phoetine’s lips are naturally pouty and thick, being curves downwards towards the edges that don’t dare to move, even when she’s smiling. Her small, rounded chin sits directly under her lips, even with her jawline. Directly even with them are the corners of her wide-set, large eyes. They match the same gradient of her hair, the brown lightening as it fades towards the pupil.
Dressing isn’t something that Phoetine takes to the extreme, but she likes to be able to present herself femininely. Her regular bottoms include a pencil skirt, light pants or khakis, and her top items include a button-up blouse or an “off-the-shoulder” shirt. When it comes to footwear, though, she refuses to wear anything other than her worn tennis shoes.
Personality:I'm strong because I'm small.
Determined, easily frustrated, uptight, innocent–all of these word describe Phoetine. She has the ‘goody good’ persona, believing that the world is immature and that things should be taken more seriously. Phoetine thinks the Hunger Games are rather barbaric, horribly cruel and that no human being should have to go through the trauma, even if they were to become the victor. She knows how to see through one’s appearance, and look at the true facts. When others try to deny their feelings that are plainly obvious, Phoetine is determined to make them admit to their real emotions. Besides, the truth always comes out at some point.
Phoetine believes in her family business of textile making and sewing. If someone were to give her one hundred feet of thread and a pound of fabric, they’d have a complete outfit by the end of the week. Besides her education, her family’s business is the most important activity in her case. Though, if one was to watch her for twenty four hours, it would be obvious that Phoetine becomes aggravated. She’s easily frustrated, and has a short temper. She can be overly determined to accomplish difficult tasks, and often puts herself down when she doesn’t get it right the first time.
Phoetine has the innocence of a four year old. When others around her are making rude or sexual jokes or comments, only question marks are flying around in her brain. She doesn’t understand why teenagers should worry about things such as relationships or sexual activities, because they still have their future to look forward to. With these strict morals, Phoetine finds it hard to make any friends that understand her way of thinking. Phoetine is pure–she’s never even kissed a boy. She doesn’t believe that one could love another so early in life, that one should be older to have a relationship.
History:don't look at me like I'm a piece of meat.
Born in a household of textile makers and sewers, Phoetine could hold a needle and thread by the time she was fifteen months old. She didn’t know how to use them, of course, but it was a start. Phoetine grew up around her five brothers and her parents. She was never alone, and often had help when working. Three of her brothers and her father worked in the nearby textile factory, while she, her mother, and two of her brothers worked in the family shop, creating outfits and clothing items for the capitol and district members.
When Phoetine was seven years old, her elder brother, Felix, died while working in the textile factories. He had gotten his shirt sleeve caught in one of the machines, and it had pulled him in, cutting him to pieces. Nothing was ever left of her brother, except his family, who was left to mourn for their loss. Phoetine, being so young, didn’t really understand what happened, except that her brother was never coming back. A show box filled with his prized possessions was buried under the ground as a memorial for him.
Phoetine went on after that, continuing the family business of working in her family’s shop. Her family lived in a large, but empty two story house made of pine wood; the top floor was used as living space, while the bottom floor held the family shop. Phoetine, out of all her siblings, had the quickest hands and most concentration, meaning she got more work done. She received a small allowance out of the money she earned from her clothing, and from the thread she could make out of wool.
When Phoetine turned twelve years old, it was time for the reaping. Fortunately for her family, no one was reaped from their household, but Phoetine watched one of her brother’s friends get reaped and forced to fight. He died early on, which left her brother in mourning also. Phoetine developed a neutral understanding with the capitol, not having any likes or dislikes of their ways. She never shows anything but respect to the capitol, but it was really because she didn’t understand the specifics to why they did things certain ways.
Phoetine took over her family’s business at age fourteen, while her mother stayed at home to care for her other brothers, while her father and some of her other brothers continued to work at the textile factory. After the loss of her brother, they were much more careful about how they worked, but her whole family never forgot how their lives had been affected by the government of Panem.
