Avis has light brown hair that falls to her shoulders. She has a very petite frame, and very pale skin. Her nose is upturned, giving her a rather snooty look. Some who look at her think of a mouse. She has a very long and slender face, and a fairly large forehead. Her ears are often hidden behind her brown tresses.
Avis is tiny. She has a small waistline, a small everything. She's severely underweight, only eighty pounds, but her family can't afford to feed her well. Her eyes are a chocolaty brown, which would shine if it weren't for the sadness lying in them. Her height is average, standing at 5'3".
Avis can usually be seen in hand-me-down clothes, because her family can't afford any better. They hang loosely over her small frame, and they're obviously too big for her. Avis has long and slender fingers, which have many blisters on them.

Avis is a calm girl. She rarely gets worked up over anything. Her face almost always remains neutral, no matter what's going on. Her presence in itself can be calming, simply because of the way she holds herself. Avis is not confident most of the time. However, she holds her head up high and pushes through the hard parts.
The brown haired girl has very bad trust issues. She trusts no one, not even her family, and that worries them. She flinches when touched, jumps away when she hears loud noises. She's often seen alone in a corner, because she's too shy and afraid to speak. She's deathly afraid of her ideas being shot down, so she instead keeps them to herself.
Avis barely knows how to handle public situations anymore. She holes up in her room painting whenever she can, avoiding the outside world. Avis never snaps. She's sweet when she actually talks. However, some people are actually fooled into thinking she's mute because she talks so little. She prefers going off into her mind, getting lost in her thoughts.

Avis has a very, very large and extended family. She lives with her mom, dad, grandparents, and her three siblings. Her family is poor, on top of that. Her parents work at factories, and her grandparents are too old and crippled to work. Her siblings are all younger than her, and therefore unable to make any good money. Avis sells her paintings whenever she gets the chance, but they aren't exactly on District 9's wishlist.
Avis's grandparents are strict, to say the least. They believe that everything and everybody has a place, and that if that place is messed up then there should be consequences. Avis does her best to stay out of their way. Her parents do the same, letting them do as they wish and simply staying out of it. Her parents aren't very strict, too busy working to care.
Avis can usually be found with her younger sisters, teaching them how to paint. She's a very talented painter, and her sisters and parents are awed by it. They want to see her go far with it, but know that the odds of this are slim. Avis Toland will probably just end up as another factory worker, and this saddens her. The brown haired girl does everything she can to prevent this, but inside she knows the odds of being a painter in District 9 are slim to none.
Avis's childhood was spent in loneliness. She had very few friends, and the ones she did have either abandoned her or used her. This lead to the trust issues that she has now. The one friend that was actually good to her got into an accident and lost her memory, which she's still struggling to regain. Avis has never understood why she has such trouble making friends. Whether it's because of her problems with trust or she just can't pick out the good apples of the bunch evades her.
Going back even younger, Avis was never the center of attention in her family. As soon as she was born her mother was pregnant once more, shifting the attention off of her almost immediately. Since then, it's been the same way. She has never gotten her turn in the spotlight before, and at this point she doesn't particularly want it. Avis often times will purposefully step out of the spotlight, just because she's so used to not being the center of attention. The idea of everybody looking at her at once terrifies her.
