As I've posted in my introduction post, I have been RPing in MMOs for a while now. I bounced from MMO to MMO for a little while. However, five years ago I found a wonderful game called City of Heroes. It was like nothing I'd ever experienced before. The RP was engaging and kept me coming back for more, even as I tried other games. I've met countless friends (including Heartwood, who I drug over to here) and forged relationships, all while telling my characters' stories. There really is no other community or game out there quite like it.
Friday, NCSoft walked into Paragon Studios, the studio that makes the game, and told them that due to "company refocusing" they were all out of a job, effective immediately and the game would be going dark at the end of November. Words cannot describe the level of sickening shock this brought out in everyone. The game was not struggling, new stuff was being developed, right up to Friday. There was zero warning and still no immediately apparent reason for the shut down.
The community has decided not to go quietly into that good night. There are letter writing campaigns, both to NCSoft to reconsider their decision and to outside sources of income to help turn Paragon Studios into an independant developer. There are efforts to hack the code so we can maintain private servers. There are petitions for people to sign.
Which is where I ask for your help. Please, please, please go sign this petition. At time of writing, we were sitting at almost 13,500 signatures. Some people might say, "It's just a game." But it's more than that. The best analogy I can think of is imagine someone "higher up" came to this site and told you that not only was your site being shut down in three months, they were taking your MEDIUM for telling your stories as well. It would be gone, forever, with no way of continuing the characters you've grown to love and care about.
That's what's happening to City of Heroes. That's why we need all gamers, even those who don't play CoH, to help save our game. So please, take a minute of your time, and sign the petition to stop the shut down.
In the words of another forum reader, "We're heroes. This is what we do."
