Haywire
Holland. Holland. Holland. The words kept repeating in Haywire's head. He walked around the District Square. Looking for a tall enough building. Then he found it. There, to his left, stood the building he would turn to as a child when he was bullied. He ran for the back of the building, where he found a back ladder.
Haywire never knew what the building was used for. Mainly because he didn’t know how to read. He slept there day and night. As a 32-year-old homeless mental/insane man, his home was depicted as “a piece of crap”, but to him, it was his “castle” and he was the king.
He was going to jump off the ledge. To anyone else, this was seen as suicide, but from his point of view, he thought he would bounce all the way to Holland. At least, that’s what the mean man said to him 3 hours before.
“Look, guy. You have no life. No friends. No home. How ‘bout you go back to your piece of crap building and jump right off. That way, you’ll bounce all the way to Holland. You like Holland, don’t you, guy?” the man said. Haywire nodded.
“M—I like Ho--Holl—Holland.” He looked around and whispered to the man. “I could bo—bounce all da way to Holland?” he asked with curiosity. Since he was mentally challenged, he stumbled across words and talked like a 4 year old.
“Yup.” The man smirked. “All the way to Holland.” He fastened up his leather jacket. They were outside the Hob. Haywire was trying to get some food when the man stopped him. “Now get outta here, you dumb a**.”
Haywire nodded.
So, here he was. About to “bounce” all the way to Holland. He was standing on the ledge of the building. He looked down and got busy. He thought about maybe staying in Panem a bit longer, so he sat down on the ledge. His feet were swinging back and forth like a little child on a swing. He hands gripped the edge of the where his legs were hanging off. He forgot how scared he was of heights. But he had to jump. So he could bounce all the way to Holland.
He stared at the group of people growing in mass as he stared down. Did they come to say good-bye? Shouts came from all over the people:
“He’s gonna jump!!”
“It’s that idiot guy!!!”
Soon, a rally was going on. They were shouting the chorus of “JUMP!! JUMP!! JUMP!!”
Wo-ow!! They a-ar really hap-happy for me!! He thought.
“Okie-Dokie!! I-I am gonna jum—jump!!” he yelled. Shouts of joy rose up from the crowd. “….But I’m gonna wa—wait for a liddle whild!!” he exclaimed. They booed.
He shrugged. They were going to have to wait if they wanted him to bounce to Holland.
