Does, Thinks, Says, Hears
Apex watched as the help prepared everything for him; smiling ear to ear as he thought about the long night that awaited him. Apex hosted parties once or twice a month, and tonight was going to be the biggest one of them all. Like usual, his father had not only granted him permission to have alcohol at the parties, but had supplied so many beer kegs, Apex had wondered if there would be more kegs than people. Apex didn’t even drink, but he knew how boring parties were without alcohol; White’s don’t throw boring parties.
The decorations were typical of the Whites. The lights were bright, and had an ultraviolet option for when the party was in full swing. Speakers were installed in nearly every wall, and when the volume was put up to full blast, you could hear everything crystal clearly, as if you were a part of the music yourself. For half the night, Apex had hired a local DJ who had been quickly growing in popularity; Usually he spend top dollar on everything that he could, but he had a very particular taste in DJs. He had to be the one to give them their first big party, and in exchange, they would promote him for the Hunger Games if his turn ever came up. The DJ played a mix of hip hop, pop, and house music, blending each genre beautifully into each other, and sometimes at the same time.
The house was isolated and gated enough to avoid any noise complaints; as if the Peacekeepers would really bother with a small civil disturbance anyway.
When entering the front door, people would immediately see the foyer, decorated extravagantly in gold and white. Once leaving the foyer, people entered the large living room that had been converted into the dance floor. Drinks lined the walls, couches were strategically placed for comfort, and a cleaning staff stood carefully at attention to catch any spills or broken glass. Connected to the living room was a large kitchen and bar designed specifically for company like this; chefs were preparing a wide array of appetizers; specialties that could only be surpassed by the chefs of the Capital.
The rest of the house was closed off. The guesthouse, which was usually used people who needed to satisfy certain…”urges”, now belonged to a girl they had taken it at the expense of her abusive father. Well, it didn’t belong to her, but she had been living there anyhow. Apex had told her she was allowed to come out whenever she pleased; but he wasn’t sure if she was in the mood.
In addition to the cooking and cleaning staff, Apex had an emergency medical team that his father recommended on call. You never know who would overdose, suffer from alcohol poisoning, or get injured to due some sort of altercation. Fights usually broke out at parties, or at least parties that had been thrown by the Whites.
Apex also had hired a team of bouncers. Made up from some of the less fortunate Careers who never quite made it to the Hunger Games, the security team carefully inspected the guests, making sure no violence breaks out (without Apex’s permission of course). Because everyone was allowed, there were usually a few issues that arose throughout the night. Sometimes, Apex made a show of it and handled it himself. Sometimes he passed the responsibility over to some of his Career friends, but most of the time, the bouncers handled the chaos themselves.
As people funneled in, Apex greeted all of them himself, whether he knew them or not. Appearing kind and welcoming went a long way when dealing with the public, something he should practice if he were to ever enter the Hunger Games. He greeted the boys he knew with a special handshake, different for every person. Making everyone feel special was crucial. He greeted every girl with a hug and a kiss, sometimes a quick peck on the cheek, and if he knew them well enough, a quick peck on the lips.
The party was in full swing by midnight, and eventually, Apex stopped greeting people and just enjoyed his own festivities.
