Does, Thinks, Says, Hears
"David, come on." My voice is low, matching the dim light from the dawn peeking in from the window. I've been awake for over an hour now, despite the fact that it's Saturday. No school just means I can get in some extra work, save some extra money for our eventually departure from this place. But it won't happen if I have to leave David here. "If we leave now, we can drop Willow off at Miss Kyler's and still make it to the mill before anyone else." With a quiet grunt, I hoist the sleeping toddler back up, her head on my shoulder. Her curly blonde hair tickles my cheek as she snores softly. I smile and hug her closer to me as David comes out of the kitchen, stuffing a couple biscuits into his pack. Silently, we slip out of the house, careful not to wake Caleb or Mom.
The roads are still dark, the sun still hiding behind the horizon and painting the world a drab grey. The only sounds are our feet rustling through the grass and Willow's soft, steady breathing. I say a silent prayer of thanks that she's still asleep. Getting out of the house quietly is hard enough with just me and David. Willow would have just made more noise. I can protect her if she's quiet. The trio of us move silently as ghosts through the buildings. By the time we get to Miss Kyler's, Willow is beginning to stir and my arms are aching from the effort of carrying her.
The exchange is short. After all, we're in a hurry. I don't think Willow even opened her eyes when I kissed her forehead. We promise to return at the end of the day and hurry off towards the mill, zig-zagging between the trees. I spend most of the trip rubbing out the ache in my arms. Slipping quietly inside, we are some of the first people there. But not the first.
"Ackerman!" Involuntarily, we both jump at the foreman's shout, turning quickly. I grab my hair and tie it back, nodding that I'm ready. The big man is already tromping over to us, pointing at my brother. "Get a wagon. You're out in the field today. Load it up and bring it back to the mill." David nods and is suddenly off, disappearing into the slowly lightening building.
"As for you," he says turning back towards me. "I need you to load those crates onto the flatbed so they can get to the station. I've already got someone on it. Just go help him."
"Yes, sir." Without another word, I walk quickly towards the loading area, spying the crates full of processed timber stacked higher and higher. There's a boy there already. I've seen him around a few times, but I've never spoken to him. Too much else going on. As he bends to lift a crate, I jog to the other side and grip it, lifting with him. "The foreman sent me to help."
