She tipped her face towards the sky and looking out, saw nothing but a wall of gray clouds. They hanged heavy with the weight of their moisture. The air was thick with summer humidity and with each breath, she felt like she was inhaling water into her lungs. The heat of the day was intense and even the animals didn’t want to come outside today. Everyone was just waiting. It seemed like the whole district was silent and waiting for the rain that so desperately wanted to pour down on them. Even the wind had stopped to wait and see what would happen. Everything seemed electrically charged. It was the kind of weather that only came around once in a blue moon.
Anyone with any sense in them would have stayed inside until the rain had fallen and the heat had cleared. Misty was never one of those normal people who listened to common sense. Why shouldn’t she be out here in the oppressive heat? It wasn’t like it had actually started to rain and it wasn’t like the rain was going to kill her. People around her were too damned obsessed with their looks. Looking at a lock of pink hair sticking out from under her hood, she sighed. She may have been a little obsessed too, but pink was such a lovely color on her. At least she never minded if she got a little wet. Sometimes she even got dirty on purpose so if she were home when her mother’s men were, they wouldn’t look at her.
She wondered what her mother was doing at this very second. It was impossible to go out on any fancy dates with the weather being like it was. It was more likely she was at home with some man in her bed, the mayor or a businessman, and was doing unspeakable things with him. That was the reason she had to stay outside. She couldn’t be home when that was going on. She had no desire to be anywhere near those snakes of her mother’s. She couldn’t go to the training center because no one really liked her there and she had no desire to get into a fight. She could probably find somewhere else to go but what was the point when she had peace and quiet outside?
A small wooden fence was the border between the training center and a nearby library. While she didn’t want to go into the training center, she was still curious about what they were doing in there. Misty hopped up on the fence and traversed the three inch wide wooden planks with ease. After years of sneaking out and running around, nothing was impossible. She walked quickly, one foot in front of the other, as though she were a squirrel or a ferret, until she was inches away from the window that looked down on the famous Career training gym. She looked down on them and watched them fight with knives, spears, axes, hands, chains, and every weapon she had never heard of. She wasn’t worried about getting caught because none of them ever looked up and no one else would be stupid enough to be out in this heat.
