Jason woke up to the smells of food in the kitchen, being cooked most likely by his mother. Somethings never changed, and his mother taking care of him and his brothers will never change. Grinning and rising from bed, he stretched and looked out the window and into the ocean. The sun was just above the shoreline and there wasn't a cloud on the horizon. He could hear the crash of the waves over the clang of dishes, and it relaxed him. As he padded his way over to the balcony, he smelled the salt crusted air with a sense of completion. He couldn't wait for the day to start, and not even his brothers could have put him in a bad mood, and he knew all three of them would try. Marc didn't need a job so he would certainly laugh. Eric, well he was glad to be out of the Career business because he was annoyed he got over-looked for volunteering. Jared was the baby, so he never had to do anything. Yup, they are going to try in vain to dampen my mood.
Today he was set to take his second job, and the one he was most excited for. He loved fishing, or well, he loved swimming. However, working out and playing hockey were his passion. Today, he would get the Career that he was training to win the Games. He may not have achieved his goal, but he'd be damned if the guy he was training didn't. What was his name again. . . Skyler? Tyler? Kyler? Kyler! Yeah that was it! He shook his head and started laughing, I should really at least get his name right if I am going to train this kid to survive and eventually kill. He couldn’t help the sarcastic mumble that escaped into the air, Oh hi, my name is Jason. I am your mentor. I want you to trust me to give you the skills to live, but don’t expect me to know your name. Yeah, I am sure that will go over wonderfully.
Grinning, he walked to his dresser and pulled out swim trunks and a muscle shirt, and slips on a pair of sneakers. Getting ready for the day, he walks down the steps to see his brothers and parents busy doing the morning routine. Marc was talking on the phone to god only knows who, probably his girlfriend. He didn’t say a word before hanging up the phone, grabbing a piece of toast, and yelling bye as he walked out the door. His father was reading the paper, his mother was cooking, and Eric was eating food faster than anyone thought was possible, no doubt late for work again. Jason was tempted to make a comment but was in too good a mood. He absently wondered where Jared was as he looked at the clock. Crap! I’m late. See you guys later!
Jason sprinted out the door, grabbing an apple off the table and vaguely catching his mother lecturing him on foul language. This happened a lot, and every time he ignored her. It wasn’t like he tried to use profanity, but if something slipped occasionally, well then it slipped. No sense crying over a few words. He sprinted down the road, hardly hearing the ocean that had once calmed him over the sound of his feet. He crashed through the back door of the Career Training Center about two minutes before he was set to start mentoring. Way to cut it close! He caught his breath, finished his apple, and leaned against the wall, waiting for Kyler to enter. Taking a breath, he mumbled to himself and threw on his emotionless mask, Well here goes nothing good fast.
