“Awooo, give me another boys, another, another!” I shake a bottle of the finest bubbly District 10 has to offer, at a price that none of these unlucky bastards can afford, before pressing at the cork. I hold the thing between my legs as it spurts out foam and a spray of alcohol. I let out a laugh that breaks into a cough before splashing my face with the fizzy alcohol. I spit out a bit onto the ground before grinning. Cheated death yet again.
Because I’m still here—still here to terrorize and make this whole district quake! I wiggled my eyebrows as I twirl around the bar, giddy as a schoolboy, pouring the champagne into glasses and slapping the backs of others that have made it to my usual post-reaping celebration. I flit about a moment as I stand in front of Naif Malloc, his eyes downcast as he hovers in the corner looking particularly delicious in his little bowtie. I fill his glass and press myself closer to him before placing a hand on his chin. He cringes for a moment before managing to look up at me. “What the f—k are you so glum about? You got to spend the whole day locked up in your f—king room, didn’t even have to watch two people get dragged away. Bet you were f—king wishing it was me…” I lean in real close, my eyes staring into his with a hunger. I’ll get you later… when I’m good and drunk… “But it ain’t… oh it ain’t…” I hold up my glass and rush to climb onto one of the tables.
“This is cheer, another year, another year!” I shout at the top of my lungs, above the ruckus of the patrons of the bloody bucket. The smoke in the air is thick, with a few candles to illuminate patches of the darkness. There is nothing more beautiful than this evening—nothing more precious than the faces of my companions, all gussied up for a day of day that never happened. There was nothing sweeter than escaping the jaws of certain death to live out one more year. It was a gruesome, terrible game, one that I protested, one that I certainly believed I could’ve faced with a grim resolution. And yet here I was, once again, drinking myself into a stupor to celebrate my life. Because that was what I had every intention of celebrating.
“Oh don’t weep for them—don’t weep…” I stamp my feet on the table and give a whistle. I raise my hand into the air, giving a serious look to Melrose Humplots, whose already got her legs spread around some boy in the corner. “We’ve seen our tributes come and go. We can raise our glass to Noreen—may her spirit rest—we’ve all felt the capitol take away loved ones, brothers, sisters…” I shake my head and click my tongue. “But they don’t break our spirits. Because I’ve seen it, my friends… I’ve seen it in District 10 this summer more than ever… even through the hardest drought, even when push comes to shove… we pulled together and we make it through. That’s District 10, that’s our district. We might not be as fancy as the lower districts but I can tell you, there’s no damn place I’d rather be than here with all of you tonight…”
I raise my glass in the air before bringing it back down again. “You got to celebrate the fact that you’re still here—don’t waste time at life’s banquet starving to death…” I patted my stomach, which had seen some slimming in the summer months but was still a wee bit bigger than I wanted it to be. “And I ain’t about to spend my evening with anyone that wants to go hungry! Now come on ladies and gents… grab a glass and grab some ass… tonight is ours for the taking!”
“And because I just so happen to be feeling generous—DRINKS ON THE HOUSE FOR EVERYONE!” I wave to big Ollie, the bartender and give a smile. F—king fools, all of them. But for one night it was nice to think that would could push away the darkness and the thought of death. They deserved that… we all did. I wasn’t about to let the capitol think that we would go the same way as with Noreen. No, I had turned over a new leaf. Living every day for the taking… and I knew just what it was that I wanted. With this I flitted about the party, whispering how’d you do’s to everyone, laughing as I lighted another cigarette. Still King, still here, still on top.
