Nothing Gold Can Stay // D1 Outsiders Plot

District 1 is known for its high-end lifestyle and glamorously opulent citizens. They are, after all, the Capitol’s favorite and therefore given the most privileges. Contrary to popular belief, however, not everyone in this sparkling gem of a district is so fortunate.

On the furthest fringes of District 1, there lies a small sub-community divided up into two socioeconomic classes: the East Side Greasers and the West Side Socs. The Greasers are the kids from the wrong side of the tracks. Tough, angry, and unforgiving, they’re up-and-coming criminals and proud of it. The Socs are the lucky ones, the ones born into higher class society, and like to rub it in the Greasers’ faces. To say they don’t get along is an understatement, but the big question is, whose side are you on?

All right, so most of you have read or heard of S.E. Hinton’s brilliant novel, The Outsiders. This won’t be exactly like the book/movie, so Johnny doesn’t have to jump into a burning building and die and Dally doesn’t have to go get himself shot. It’s just the whole Greaser/Soc concept, as well as some of the characters, that are the same.

Also, this will not have the 1960’s feel to it, and will be in a more modern setting. The Greasers are basically just the druggies and aspiring criminals, and the Socs are average District 1 citizens that are very proud of their averageness.

EAST SIDE GREASERS

PONYBOY CURTIS- 14 [OPEN]

Ponyboy is the youngest of the Greasers, though his head’s the highest in the clouds. He seems to fit in the least with the gang; does well in school, likes poetry, appreciates sunsets. He’s a very thoughtful, intelligent boy, even though he doesn’t do well in school, and constant pressure to succeed from his older brother Darry puts tension between the two. He is shy, innocent, and naïve, but he believes it’s important to be tough and to belong, though he doesn’t agree with the Greasers’ violent ways. His parents were killed in an accident when he was a kid, and he has a crush on a Soc named Cherry.

DARREL “DARRY” CURTIS- 20 [OPEN]

Darry is the oldest member of the gang and the oldest Curtis brother. He’s overworked and overserious, having quit school to work two jobs once their parents died so he could support his brothers. He has high expectations for Ponyboy, wanting him to have the opportunities that he never got to pursue, and pushes him to the point of seeming like a bully. He’s intelligent, athletic, and handsome- the unofficial leader of the Greasers- and likes to fight because he likes feeling powerful.

SODAPOP CURTIS- 16 [reserved for Lei]

Ponyboy’s happy-go-lucky, handsome older brother. Sodapop is a very likeable; kind, understanding, and fun-loving. He’s an easy-going guy with a short attention span and tons of energy, and tries his best to keep the peace between his two constantly fighting brothers, though he usually fails. Like Darry, he dropped out of high school to work, though his reasons were because he didn’t see the point of schooling. He’s handsome like Darry and is supportive of his siblings.

KEITH “TWO-BIT” MATTHEWS- 18 [OPEN]

Two-Bit is the second oldest of the Greaser gang as well as the wittiest. He’s funny and realistic, and has a knack for telling jokes and making people laugh. He’s a bit of a klepto, however, often stealing on a whim, and his most prized possession is his sleek, black-handled switchblade. He is not as hostile toward the Socs as most of the other Greasers, often flirting with Cherry’s friend Marcia.

STEVE RANDAL- 16 [OPEN]

Steve is Sodapop’s best friend and partner in crime. He’s cocky and intelligent, and one of the toughest in the gang- he once held off four opponents in a fight with a broken soda bottle. He can be sensitive, however, the type of guy that acts like a badass but cries at the end of Titanic. He’s not fond of Ponyboy, seeing him as just Sodapop’s annoying kid brother, and is very conscious of his hair.

DALLS “DALLY” WINSTON- 17 [OPEN]

Tough and angry, Dallas is the most dangerous member of the gang. He’s the master at causing trouble without alerting the Peacekeepers, though he makes sure to rub it in their faces. He’s prone to risk-taking and believes in the importance of being tough and mean in order to survive, so he tries hard not to show any emotion. Deep down, though, Dally is a compassionate and loyal friend, and is especially fond of Johnny.

JOHNNY CADE- 16 [OPEN]

The child of alcoholic and abusive parents, Johnny is nervous and sensitive. Small, frightened easily, and childlike, he’s seen as the baby of the gang even though he’s not the youngest. Though he doesn’t do well in school, he approaches intellectual matters with steady concentration, and enjoys poetry and sunsets much like Ponyboy does. Since his parents do not care for him, he sees the Greasers as his true family, and in turn the gang- especially Dally- are very protective of him. Despite his general fearfulness, Johnny can be courageous in the heat of the moment.

WEST SIDE SOCS

SHERRI “CHERRY” VALENCE- 17 [OPEN]

Though her real name is Sherri, most people call her Cherry because of her red hair. She’s open-minded, sensitive, and courageous, and is secretly friends with Ponyboy because of how much they have in common- their love for sunsets and poetry, and their disdain towards fighting. Though she is Bob’s girlfriend, she has a small crush on Dally, intrigued by his individuality.

MARCIA TREVERS- 16 [OPEN]

Cherry’s best friend and Randy’s girlfriend. She’s seen as shallow and narrow-minded, though she generally shares Cherry’s views towards the feud between the Greasers and Socs. She’s on good terms with Two-Bit, as they have the same sense of humor and taste for nonsensical musings.

RANDY ADDERSON- 16 [OPEN]

Bob’s best friend and Marcia’s boyfriend. Randy is the most openly friendly with the Greasers, seeing the futility in fighting. He’s very introspective and often refuses to fight in rumbles with the Greasers.

BOB SHELDON- 18 [OPEN]

Cherry’s boyfriend and Randy’s best friend. Bob is a privileged Soc whose parents never disciplined, making him one of the nastiest and the leader of the Socs. He has a set of three heavy rings that he wears when fighting greasers.

PAUL HOLDEN- 19 [OPEN]

Paul is a quiet, intimidating Soc who used to be friend with Darry in school, as they were often in sports together. After Darry quit school, however, all friendliness between has since vanished. He serves as a sort of second-in-command of the Socs.
