Slipping through the fence (open)

Cri ran her hands over the fence. This was going to be her last attempt at it. She had walked from the beginning of it to the end and she looked for somewhere to fit through. She knew there had been a rip in the fence, there just had to be. She had run low on her herbs and needed to get more before her little sisters got themselves into more pain and trouble. They had gotten into fights at school with some other girls who said some nasty things about Lai. She wasn’t going to put up with it, and she was glad her sisters had stuck up for Lai, but that had cost them a black eye and some minor broken bones.
She finally found the rip, and slid through it easily. The meadow was still free and she was free…for the moment. She took her running, listening for any sounds of predators or maybe peacemakers. She ran behind a tree, her breathing coming out in ragged forms. The forest was still green and alive with the chatter of birds, some of them she had known as mockingjays, a bird that the Capitol had created which they thought would die out.
She whistled a simple ten note song and it wasn’t repeated back right away, but then her song wafted through the trees. She still whistled and sang a little on the way to collect the herbs. She had a book in her hands, the leather cracked on it and it creaked when she opened it, a list inside with some pictures, not all. She needed for her sisters were deeper in the forest. She shouldered the bag more and went into the forest, wary of predators or whoever found a way into the forest by the cut in the fence. She bent down to collect the petals of a certain white flower when she heard a branch crack underneath the foot of a human. The birds had stopped singing and everything was at a standstill. She slowly slid off her bag, getting into a position she could whip around easily.
