hello world, I hope you're listening
there’s someone I’ve been missing
there’s someone I’ve been missing
The light intakes of breath coming from Hailee's mouth were all that Brenna could hear as she padded through the forest; the sun shone dimly through the gaps in the trees, and she could see her breath as she exhaled. It was a chilly morning, especially for the middle of June, but Brenna hoped that it would warm up soon. She didn't know if Hailee could take another day of this bitter, uninviting weather. Hailee slept in her arms, far off in a dreaming state, and Brenna hoped that she would be there for a while. Brenna was on the move again, and Hailee always disliked moving camp. Twigs and leaves dug into Brenna's bare feet as she moved, but her feet were so callused and used to the action that she barely felt it anymore.
Brenna's backpack dug into her shoulder, but with Hailee in her arms she couldn't afford to move it. Their whole life was in that bag: fresh clothes that Brenna washed whenever she came across a freshwater stream, food that the two of them had scavenged together at their last camp, and a photo of Hailee's mom. Whenever she cried at night, screaming and choking for her mother to hold her, she brought out the picture; faded around the edges and ripped slightly at the bottom, Hailee clung to it like a lifeline, as if it was the only thing she had in the world. In a way, it was. Brenna had managed to slip it into her pocket before they had taken off into the night all those months and days ago, the wind whistling in their ears and the smell of death still filtering through their noses. The sight of her parents' and aunt's deep, red blood washing away the beautiful white of their crisp sheets stuck in her brain like a moth keeps to a flame, and Brenna knew that she'd never be able to wash that image away.
Hailee shifted in her arms, and Brenna stopped for a moment, allowing her to settle without knowing that she was in the midst of being transported. A bird cooed in the shadows of the trees above, and a bush rustled nearby. A rabbit darted out, scampering down the hill and away from sight. The familar sight of nature in its simplicity and normalcy comforted Brenna, and she allowed herself to relax. Breathing, she began to move forward again. Her normalcy was moving forward; they couldn't keep in one place for long. She had heard rumours of random, brave-hearted District dwellers entering the confines of the woods, and Brenna couldn't afford to be discovered. As far as Brenna was concerned, the people she once lived with in District One believed she had dropped off the face of the earth. And somewhat, she had. Off the face of their earth, at least. Nobody knew of life beyond the District's borders, and that had proven to be quite useful in her adventures beyond them. The less people that knew about her and her condition, the better off she'd be.
But sometimes, she wished she had another pair of eyes to look at besides Hailee's.
