Miyuki Mereposa
A grunt of frustration escaped Miyuki's lips before she could stop it. Her master looked over at her in annoyance. "Avoxes are seen not heard" He said, annoyed. She nodded submissively, hating the fact that she couldn't speak. They were sitting in her masters study, at her feet lay a pile of papers that she had as of yet to sort. She leaned down and picked up te papers, not bothering to look at her master who was surely busy with his own worries. I wish I could talk she thought longingly. then I would tell my master exactly what I think of him she thought. She made herself busy sorting the papers.
About an hour later, her master was called to receive a letter and Miyuki waited patiently. When he returned, he smiled warmly at her. "Well, Miyuki, it would appear that you're going to have a new master" He said. She nodded, not liking the idea of having a new master one bit but she couldn't complain. She didn't have a voice or a choice for that matter. I hope this new master is at least nice she thought. It was unlikely though because she was no longer considered a person, to the capitol she was just a slave who was being punished rightfully for rebelling against them. She coughed as a plume of dust billowed up from where she placed the papers. "Done?" her master asked. She nodded. "Go, thats all I need from you today" He said dismissively. She dipped her head and walked away silently towards her tiny room. It wasn't much but it was still the only home she knew. Her parents wanted nothing to do with her so this was all she had. She looked at the single bed and the small nightstand. A framed picture of her and her sister sat on the table and she picked it up. She missed Attia terribly but she knew that the chances of ever seeing her again unless she was running an errand, were slim to none. She put the picture down and began packing her few belongings; a brush for her ears, tail, and hair, a red scarf that she wore when she went on errands, and another set of her uniform. She packed all of these items into a tiny bag and set it all by the door. Then she sat down on the bed and let tears fall over her face. A choked sob escaped her lips and she whimpered with a great deal of effort. I want to go back to the way life used to be she thought as the tears continued to fall down her face.
She was summoned the next morning to prepare breakfast for her master. She wasn't a terrible cook but she wasn't the best either. She managed to cook a fairly decent breakfast for him and he nodded as she placed it in front of him. She knew that he wouldn't offer her any so she went back to the living room. She dusted the large cabinet that held his books and straightened out his picture frames. Once she was finished, she walked silently back into the dining room to find out if she would need to run any errands that day. "You're going to your new owner today so I'm not sending you on any errands. Go and make yourself presentable, they'll be here in an hour" He said briskly. She dipped her head and went back to her room. She washed up and brushed through her dark red hair. Her ears and tail poofed when she tried to brush them out and she grunted in frustration. She did her best to get them to co-operate and finally managed to get them looking presentable. I think these are more trouble than they're worth she thought, feeling annoyed. "Avox, come" Her masters voice was sharp when he summoned her. She followed his voice to the front door. "My good friend, allow me to present to you Miyuki Mereposa, my finest avox." He said. Miyuki looked up and came face to face with her new owner.
She hadn't known what to expect, some old man who would beat her? Some crazy lady who made her dye her hair different colors? No and no. It was no one other than her own younger sister, Attia. She looked at her sister in shock as she watched her sign the papers. "Come along, Avox, you belong to me now" She said kurtly. Miyuki nodded and followed her. When they were out of sight of her old owner, her sister threw her arms around her. "Miyuki, my sister, I've missed you." She said. Miyuki felt silent tears drip down her cheeks. When Attia broke the hug, she looked at her. "We're going to free you from your life of silence" She said, smiling warmly at her. Miyuki looked at her questioningly. "I have some connections to the doctors of the capitol and they're working on a new procedure that will re-grow avoxes tongues so they can speak again."She said joyfully. Joy filled Miyuki as she thought about what her life would be like if she could speak again. She imagined all the singing she used to love to do when she was younger but then her face fell. There was no way it could work. Cutting out a tongue was one thing but growing a new one was a whole other story. She looked doubtfully at Attia. "I know you think it won't work but I have my hopes" She said enthusiastically. Miyuki could only nod. "Come along, there's so much to tell you" Her sister said. She nodded and followed her out into the busy streets of the capitol. While they walked, Attia told her all about what she had missed as an avox and at the appropriate times she nodded.
They soon arrived at the very building where Miyukis tongue had been removed in and she shrank back, terrified by the memories of the blood and pain from the procedure. Her sister nudged her encouragingly. "Its alright, Miyuki, they just want to see you so that they can begin the procedure of growing you a new tongue." Attia said softly. She put on a brave face and, with her sister walking right behind her, walked into the building. A young man wearing a lab coat greeted them warmly and took them both into a small room with chairs and a bed. "Alright, I need you to open your mouth so that I can take a sample of the tissues in there" the man said. She obeyed and he wiped a cotton swab along the inside of her mouth. "Good, that's all we need. Your tongue should be ready in a few weeks" He said. Attia thanked him and Miyuki nodded in thanks before the two of them left the building.
A few days later, her tongue was ready. Fear clawed her belly as she walked with Attia towards the building. "It'll be alright, Miyuki, they're going to help you" Attia said, hugging her comfortingly. She accepted her hug numbly as images of her last operation flashed through her mind. She shivered even though it wasn't cold. She walked timidly up the steps towards the door and was greeted by the same doctor who had taken the samples for her new tongue. He ushered them inside an operating room and she suddenly felt a stab of pain in her arm. She blacked out.
When she woke up, she felt woozy and very tired. As the drugs wore off, she became aware of something that was off. She moved the muscle that was inside her mouth were her tongue was supposed to be and was surprised to find something brush against her teeth. She bit down and pain filled her mouth. I have a tongue she thought in excitement. She opened her mouth but found that she had forgotten how to speak. She looked around as her eyes adjusted and spotted her sister sitting not far from her. She reached her hand out to her and she took it between the palms of her hand. "How do you feel?" She asked. Miyuki fought to find the words. "o-o-o-d-d-d-d-d" She struggled to say. Her sister had tears in her eyes as she looked at her. "You can talk again" She said, throwing her arms around her. Miyuki felt tears stream down her face. She could talk now.[/center]
