Lotus Tears
It's that time of year where the trees bear another set of fruit. It's also the time of victory for one lucky child over the death of twenty-three selected children. Someone who's not expected won this year and yet not from our district. This means, another year to pick fruit and starve to death at the same time. It's just so tempting to steal one of them or eat one fruit to yourself, but that gets you in a whole heap of trouble.
Even though these thoughts revel in the mind of our district's people, we are to work during this harvest time. The fields of fruit and vegetables have an abundance, and so do the trees. Among the plants that I study, fruit trees are what I'm best at tending to. I've always liked the array of colorful, unique and natural style of each trees flower. I also like watching each fruit grow and mature from the day I first see their buds.
I look up to one of the peacekeepers that assign us jobs, and he just plainly gives me orders."You. In orchard 11. Tree number 4." The peacekeeper says clearly before handing me a sac for gathering the fruit. I simply give a short nod and proceed to the isle of fruit trees I need to work in.
When I get to the trees I realize which field I'm put in. It's the Gamboge trees I must climb today for their fruit. I've never been around these trees, but I've read a lot about them. For instance, they can grow up to be forty feet in height and that they're not easy to climb. They're also mistaken for mangosteens as well, but the main difference just by sight is their leaf color and shape. Their bark and branches are apparently too hard and too brittle to climb up easily like other trees, so I must be very careful.
I look at the organized row of Gamoge and then I spot the tree that I'm assigned to. When I put my hand on the bark of the tree, I confirm that what I read in the plant encyclopedia in our school library is correct; the Gamoge tree is quite hard and rough, but it's very easy to peel right off. This signals me to be even more careful when I climb or I may fall quite the distance, like that time before.
When I start to climb the tree, I begin developing a strategy to climb up this tree as efficiently as possible. The branch I place my hand on is quite sturdy, so use it to help raise my body. My feet 'walk' up the trunk while my hands latch on to that sturdy branch, then I manage to get up to at least the first level off the ground. Then I hear a faint chattering sound. I look up to see a woodpecker, singing his song. This is when I decide to start singing a song I heard some time ago.
"One mischievous little woodpecker
Another day, pecking your holes
Ruining the woods, tree wrecker"
The woodpecker seems to stop his pecking to listen to my young voice. In which case I smile back at him. I start to climb up a bit more and reach for the closest fruit and put it in the bag before looking up and surveying what distance I must climb to pick the tree clean.
"The angry old forest god turned your poor beak into a poison knife
Poor little wood pecker, your nesting holes are all tainted
Your food with toxins rife"
My song continues as I go up further to collect the fruit. The wood pecker seems to be climbing up with me, jumping up from branch to branch. I've always been better with animals then with nature anyways. It's just too hard to make a decent conversation with other people.
I look around to see that in my neighboring trees there are two people in each tree. 'Where's the one who's supposed to help me?' I ask myself. I give a sigh and finish my song while I work.
"Touch your friends, and they all will die falling at your feet
Oh, sad little woodpecker
Poisonous tears, shining brightly, as they stream down your cheek."
My voice is loud enough for someone in a close radius to hear, but quiet enough for the people in the trees next to me not to hear. Once I finish my song, the wood pecker seems to tilt it's head at me before turning around to fly off in the sky. It would've been nice to have some company; even another person to be around would make me feel better at the very least.
My eyes search out to see a stray fruit on a branch. I really can't miss any ripe fruit on trees because the last time I did got me a docked pay. It's actually very strict like this; I cant snap a branch or let a fruit drop and things like that. It's just despicable to think that a fruit that's dropped to the ground can't even be washed or eaten by the starving people of our district.
I continue on with my duty by reaching for the fruit. 'It's at the tip of my finger... If I could just-' I think to myself before realizing I have wiggled the fruit loose from it's stem and I watch it plummet right down along with my heart...
