Calypso Pearl walked along the shoreline, boots in her hand and bare feet and legs getting drowned by the last trickle of dying waves. She looked out to the sea, and tried stretching her aching muscles for relief, which didn't work; it never worked. That was the price she paid for being the best young fisher her age in District 4.

Even the adults on the boat were happy to have her there, as hard as she worked. She was happy to be there, too, sore muscles or not – fishing, boats, the sea, were in her blood. All she hoped was that some day she'd be casting nets and line off her own boat.

The only other thing she loved to do was draw, and it was coming up on another beautiful sunset now, and Caly wished she had her drawing pad and pencil. She decided to hurry home and get them; knowing where she was would keep her mom and big brother Vega from worrying about it. She moved along the beach with a fast stride...

Aqua shivered in the breeze, and wrapped her arms around herself. It wasn't that the day itself was cold-She herself, always was.
Casting a glance out to the sea, sighed, Aqua became lost in thought. She lost herself to the sunset, her eyes seeing nothing but the glow of it, and smiled, thinking how if she could create her own world, the sunsets would last forever, and have a stunning beauty to them.
Aqua shook her head, laughing at nothing in particular, before the familiar lonely feeling engulfed her heart again.

Seeing the other girl down by the edge of the water a hundred yards ahead, Calypso strolled casually until she had reached the other's side. "Its gorgeous, isn't it?" she asked with her hand up in a little wave to indicate the sunset colored sea. "The sea is already beautiful, I mean, but even more, you know?" she smiled and then she added, "Um, hi, I'm Caly. Calypso, but everyone calls me Caly. Sorry if I smell like fish." Which she probably does, as she'd been on a fishing boat for hours.

...i don't care if your world is ending today cause I wasn't invited to it anyway...

Aqua turned her eyes to Caly. "I guess. The sea is all we know, so of course it is beautiful."
Then she turned to the sea again, "Don't worry. My whole house smells of fish. This whole town does--its been so long since I've smelt fish-less air. My name is Aqua."
Aqua nodded, and jumped onto the beach and took small steps towards the beach.

I decided to take a stroll down the beach, for I have nothing much better to do. I've finished all of my school work, and the daily training session with my parents went smoothly. I think I've mastered knife throwing, which I am extremely proud of. Just yesterday, only about seventy five percent of my shots were accurate. Today, I got only bull's eyes.

I stand tall and maintain a positive expression, jogging down the setting shoreline. I really do need to practice my running, which isn't very fast. I can tell it disappoints my parents, which really makes me feel that I need to work on tuning my average speed up.

As my boots smack the ground, I get that itching feeling that I'm going to fall over. My body is much better proportioned for swimming than for running, with my long arms and considerably short legs. As I jog I pass two girls. "It's gorgeous, isn't it?" One of them is saying. She seems about my age, maybe a little bit older, with dark hair and eyes. "The sea is already beautiful, I mean, but even more, you know?"

I suddenly stop running, taking in large breaths, doing all I possibly can to not pant. "Um, hi, I'm Caly," she continues. "Calypso, but everyone calls me Caly. Sorry if I smell like fish." I walk toward Caly and the blonde girl she's talking to.

"I guess," the other girl is saying. "The sea is all we know, so of course it is beautiful. Don't worry. My whole house smells of fish. This whole town does--its been so long since I've smelt fish-less air. My name is Aqua." Okay. So their names are Caly and Aqua, two rather pretty names if you ask me. I'll remember that.

Just as I reach their spot on the shoreline, Aqua turns and walks on to the beach. "Hey," I say to Caly, with my right hand up in greeting and a casual smile on my lips. "I don't mean to be rude- I was just taking a jog. It's a beautiful sunset, don't you think? I'm Celia Ostberg, by the way."

Aqua, the blonde girl, glances back, noticing me talking to Caly. Her expression is slightly jealous. Is it possible she thinks I'm trying to steal a friend from her? Since I'm in a good mood, I decide to make sure she doesn't leave thinking that. After all, it isn't true.

To solve things, I glance out at the ocean. "Do you want to go down to the ocean?" I ask Caly. If she says yes, then it's killing two birds with one stone, except in a good way. A, I get to go to the beach, B, Aqua won't feel left out. Then I realize there's a third thing, too. I can possibly make two new friends, instead of one.

I'm not always sure if my friends are really my friends. I don't trust them- I can't afford to trust anybody. But they're my friends. . . right? To be honest, I'm not completely sure I have any. Any real ones. On the outside, nobody would think I would care. Deep inside, it hurts my more than anyone could think I could hurt.

The tide rolls in strong onto the silky smooth sands as I walk down the road, board under my arm. His five-finger shoes give a dull click on the pavement and my blue board shorts rub against each other, creating a slight swishing sound. It has been a long day. Jason has been working me fairly hard in my training, which I don’t particularly mind, but at the same time, I need this time off. I feel exhausted, and the ocean is absolutely screaming my name at this point. My head is high, face to the sky as I breath deep the salty-sweet air that just smells like home to me. I turn a corner and walk down onto the sand. The sun is still high when I reach the beach which for the most part is completely deserted.

I look out at the horizon and I can see the white caps rolling in. “Ooo papa, that’s nice.” I mutter to myself, taking in the sight. I paddle out and enjoy a few hours out on the water, before the sun begins to set. As it does, I turn by point toward the sunset, and soak it in. The board is waxy under my tan, wet back, but I don’t care. I let the waves rock me back and forth as I lay there. The big swell has already passed and I know it won’t be back until after dark. I turn by board to the shore after a while, the golden, orange, and purple sunset exploding behind me, and paddle in, headed for the back pack I left sitting by the rocks. How long has it been since I have eaten? Jason would kill me if he knew I went all afternoon without eating anything. I pull the board up onto the sand and climb on a large rock less than three meters from the water, and pull a sandwich, a bottle of water, and an apple from my pack. This is the life; nothing compares to a relaxing evening at the beach. I tilt my head a little to the left, as I hear the voice of three girls, all about my age, a little ways down the beach. I make a slightly confused face as I turn a look at them. How long have they been there?

Gazing out at the sea, I see a boy about my age sitting on a rock out of the right side of my peripheral vision. I turn my head to see them unpack a meal, seeming unaware of Aqua, Caly and I being present.

He has a board pulled up on the sand beside him. I'd expect he was fishing and just got back, only there are no fish or nets. If this boy is one of those rich snobs who spends their spare time leisure surfing on own board and boating around for fun in their own yacht, making fun of the hard working fishers for their own entertaiment, I already don't want anything to do with him.

However, this boy may have had a bad day fishing, so I decide to not just dismiss him as a self serving rich kid. Finally, he notices me. "Hey!" I call to them. "When did you get here?"

My mouth now full of the juicy red fruit I had just pulled from my pack, I turn my head a little more toward the beach, toward the girls that were congregated there. I had to smile a little as one of them, who at this distance appeared blond, felt comfortable enough to yell at me.Hey! When did you get here? The overall abrasive, yet friendly tone in her voice makes me laugh as I pull by bag onto my shoulder and drop down off the side of the rock, my feet sinking gently into the almost silky floor of the beach. Bending at the waist I pick up my board and carry it under my left arm, letting my right hang limp at my side. I throw my head back a little, resuming my generally cocky attitude, the swagger in my walk coming back out as I draw near to the girls, a smug, arrogant grin spread across my lips. Once I get close to them, I notice that they are all my age, but I don’t know their names. Their faces are familiar, from school I suppose but other than that, I couldn’t tell them from Eve.

”I uh,’ I start, looking at their feet. It’s not that I’m nervous, it’s just a part of me to act this way. I smile wider, my dimples emerging, and look up, the bright green of my eyes glinting in the setting sun.” I’ve actually been here since earlier this afternoon, you probably just didn’t notice my out there on the water. When did you get here?”

This last bit isn’t meant to be accusatory at all, but I definitely realize that it came across that way. I roll my shoulders back and stick my board into the sand, taking up a lean against it. I look from girl to girl, before bringing my gaze back to the blond who initially yelled at me. I can’t quite read her, but she definitely gives off the air of someone who has more going on that she lets on. I dismiss this observation waiting for her response. In an attempt to break the awkwardness of this whole situation I decide to open my mouth again.

”I’m Kyler, by the way….”

From the way he laughs at me, I automatically settle on the idea that he's probably a spoiled rich kid. Still, maybe not, though. It's just part of me to be quizzical. If I had to choose sides, I probably wouldn't do it, at least not yet.

As he walks over to where I am standing along with Caly and Aqua, I make myself brace for anything. "Uh..." Okay. That was not what I was expecting. "I’ve actually been here since earlier this afternoon, you probably just didn’t notice my out there on the water. When did you get here?" That's definitely a lot more like it. I smile, a little smirk like. "I'm Kyler, by the way..."

"A little while," I reply, smoothly. Smile sweetly. "May I ask, what exactly have you been doing the whole time you've been here? Kyler?" I raise an eyebrow, showing that I'm not getting out of here without an answer.
