Ink kicked off her ruddy boots and sunk her toes into the warm sand of the beach. She knew more than most how much trouble a teenager of District 4 could get in for not going to work or classes could get in, but she wasn't too worried. That would be on of the very few advantages of having a peacekeeper father. She payed back and stretched her arms back behind her, stretching like a cat in the sun.

She squealed abruptly as Ryan, her Shepard, came and jumped onto Inks chest. Ink laughed as the creature barked enthusiastically at her. Ink pushed her away playfully as Ryan licked Inks face. Another advantage would be Ryan. Not many people in some of the districts could afford having a pet.

Then again, having everyone either to snobbish or too scared to speak two words to her was a bit of a disadvantage. Or it would be for most girls, but Ink wasn't most girls. She yawned and sat up as she heard a soft padding on the sand behind her. Footsteps?

Claire walked down the beach, running a hand through her sleek red hair. She needed some fresh air. Sometimes school got too crowded. Breathing in the scent of the salty ocean smell, she padded down the soft white sand. And then she saw another girl sitting on the sand. The frizzy hair and the dog gave it away. Claire stifled a groan. Ink Marrow. The peacekeeper's daughter who could get away with anything she wanted. No one would dare touch her. Most people were scared of her. Claire wasn't. She could look angelic enough at times, and besides, she wouldn't do anything stupid. Not in front of Ink.

She stared at the dog Ink was hugging. The other thing Claire envied her. A companion. Sometimes her twin brother was too much. Matthew meant well, but he was annoying at times. And him bringing his girlfriends home was a nightmare. Dawn, her little sister, would be running around screaming, her mother cooking and her father working. And she'd be glaring at her brother.

Sigh. She got a little cooped up at home at times. Picking up a smooth grey pebble, she deftly skimmed it across the water. One. Two. Three. Four. It bounced once more, then sunk. Smiling, she got ready to throw another again.

As Ryan settled down to lay at her feet, one ear perked up at the sound of the other girl throwing pebbles, Ink took the chance to pull her dark hair into a messy ponytail. Days like this, 'Incandescence Lavender Marrow''s hair got thick with frizz and curls. Her mother would have a fit if she saw Inks hair disheveled as it was. But once again. No shits were given.

Of course, Ink recognized Claire. She knew the faces of nearly everyone in their district, just as they knew hers. And Ink knew about Lucas, everyone did. It had been a small epidemic that winter. Ink had gotten sick herself, but her family got the best medicine the capitol could offer. Yet another reason for the people of her district to hate her. Her mother always said that they were jealous, but then again Ink always said that her mother was shallow, vain, and utterly self centered. She didn't really take any of her opinions to heart.

Ink glanced back over at the red haired girl to her side. She normally would have just ignored her back, but today she wasn't in the best of moods, and Ryan couldn't exactly respond to her. "So, Claire. What's the plan here? Ignore each other until one of us leaves, or make an actual conversation?" Ink watched the girl's face for any show of emotion. "Or are you going to go on the apparent suicide mission of speaking to Ink Marrow? I really don't have much of a preference." She'd heard from her mother never to speak to the 'common folk' of district, but once again. Ink never listened to her mother.

Claire rolled her eyes. She wasn't going to be scared off by this Peacekeeper's daughter. Everyone knew Ink got everything she wanted. And Claire wasn't going to give her that satisfication.
"Of course not, Ink. I can see you don't have anything else to do." She said sharply. Watching for any emotion to come across Ink's freckly face, she continued.
"What are you going to do now? Report me for not speaking to you?"

Ink felt her face fold into a not-so-slight smirk. "Yes, play the father card. That's really creative, I haven't heard that before. No, really." The sarcasm was practically dripping out of her voice. Ink turned her head rather slowly, turning to face the other, red-haired girl.

She reached forward, scratching the ears of Ryan. She knew all too well that there was hardly any way the other girl could get a pet. But Claire had friends. She could talk to anyone she wanted, be treated like a normal person. So Ink would milk Ryan for all she could.

"So tell me, Claire, how could I report you for not talking to me, when-wow! Here you are talking to me." Her voice dropped to a disinterested lull in the last sentence. She hadn't looked away from Ryan yet. If Claire was going to try to get under her skin, Ink could play right back.

Ugh. What did Ink want?
"Look, Ink, what do you want? Do you want a friend? Or are you too good for that?" Claire scowled. She kicked the sand with her sandal.
"You know I want a dog. Desperately. But instead of being nice about it, you push it in my face. You're the most despicable person I've ever met. You don't know what it's like to have lost your older brother. You don't know what it's like to have no space at home. You never will, you empty headed sneak." At the end of this long speech, Claire breathed in and out, and stormed back up the beach.

Ink felt her hands clench into fists. She didn't even bother replying to her questions. Ink looked at the other girl, her face now concealed into an icy stare. "No. You're right. I obviously have everything that a girl could ever want. A family that loves me, a brother that at one time gave two shits about what happened to me, people don't judge me the moment they see me, a friend who talks back."

Her mouth turned up into a smile, but it was void of humor. "Oh wait! That's you! Right, I forgot I'm the lucky one here. I have everything! A nonexistant father, a brother who never spoke two words to me the day her left, a mother who picks at every little imperfection. Not to mention a million expectations!" Her voice went higher into a falsetto, mimicking her mothers voice. " Don't sit like that, Incandescence. Don't wear your hair like that, Incandescence. Wear something else, Incandescence. Don't bother your father Incandescence, he's busy. Don't talk to them Incandescence. lift your shoulders Incandescence, get that mangy dog out of the house, Incandescence, smile pretty for the portrait Incandescence. Dont breathe too deeply, Incandescence."

Ink didn't quite know why she was dumping all of this on the other girl. She had never spoken to anyone about what her parents were like. Everyone just assumed she lived in a perfect world of bubbles and sunshine and unicorns.Ryan was now up, licking Ink's hand comfortingly. She faced away from the other girl and back towards the ocean. "But, right. my life is perfect. Why am I complaining?"

Claire blushed. She had no idea the girl's mother was that nasty. Poor Ink. her life was worse than hers. She never knew Ink Marrow was this fragile inside. Ugh. Crystallis Marrow. Infamous in the District. No one had any proof, but there were rumors of adultery. She was despised. The shallow woman wanted so much to be part of the Capitol. Obviously. Who names their kids Radient and Incandescence? Capitol residents.

But she was probably too proud for pity. Taking a deep breath, she said,
"Ink. I can't get your father or brother back. And I can't stop your mother from criticizing you. But I can be the friend that talks back to you."

Ink snorted audibly. She didn't need, didn't want this girl's pity. Honestly, what did she expect? After years of avoiding each other, after years of hatred pushed between Ink and the rest of the district four kids, one short conversation was going to make it all right? Ink didn't think she was better than anyone, that was her mother's job, but she did think there was a sort of glass wall between her and everyone else. She could watch, scream through the glass, but she would never be part of them.

Ink looked at the other girl coldly. "I don't think that's the best idea, Claire. You wouldn't want to be seen talking to a 'despicable sneak'." She replied, quoting the other girl. As venomous as she tried to make her voice sound, Ink couldn't stop her voice from shaking.

Claire bit the inside of her cheek. Try to stay calm. She told herself, her cheeks heating up like metal in a furnace. Breathing in deeply, she stayed calm. Shouting wasn't going to help anything.
"Okay, then. I guess you're right. But the offer's still up if you want it." She forced a smile.
"I've got to run and get back home to help with dinner. See you around, Ink. Or not."
Claire waved and ran swiftly back up the beach, down the winding path into town, and stopped in front of the market, breathing hard.

She ambled up to the vegetable stall and inspected the veg for sale.
"Business' tough, girl. Veg is getting expensive. Apparently Eleven's had a large fire. Most of the veg gets flown off to the Capitol anyway." The old lady in the stall whispered in Claire's ear.
"You know most of this is illegal already, Claire." She hissed.
Claire sighed. Money was running tight at home already.
"Five goods for a head of cabbage." The woman crossed her arms.
"Seaia, give me three goods and it doesn't have to be fresh." Claire said wearily. She wanted the best of everything for her little sister, Dawn, but sometimes it just couldn't be done. Seaia groaned.
"You should be glad I'm friends with your grandmother. How many heads?" She chuckled
"Three, please."
Claire counted out the money and reluctantly handed it over. Seaia grabbed it and held it tight in a claw.

Claire found herself worrying about Ink when she walked across the bridge back home. Ink didn't need to worry about food, but still. She walked by the Marrow's luxury home, and heard scolding inside.
