Avox Errands

I wander aimlessly through the rooms, completely skipping any chores I'd have need to do. It wasn't quite fair to be an Avox. I mean, they take us from our homes for doing almost nothing, then expect us to actually do what they say. I wouldn't be doing what I was asked to do. Well, not really asked, more like ordered. Made to do agains tmy will. Many synonyms, many definitions. Synonym for Avox? Slave, captive, prisoner. Well there's that word again, slave. I could be bought and sold all anyone wanted. Then, after a year, I'd go serve the tributes. I've never had to worry about a single Reaping - for myself. Can't say much for the people around me I wondered about being Reaped.

"Sophie" I hear Laura call. Rolling my eyes, I turn around and see her in the most ridculous clothes. What in the name of Ripred is she wearing? It looks lke a lamp. I wish I could tell her that, but it's impossible. Completely, utterly, absolutely imossible. Not with my severed tongue, anyways. I wonder how a capitolite would react if an Avox were to come to their bed at night, and cut out their tongue. The Avox would be killed, of course. The capitolite given a replacement tongue. Goodness. "Meet me in my room in about ten minutes, okay?" She tells me. I nod my head. She knows I won't be there, and she'll have to come looking for me. What's the point of telling me in the first place?

I climb onto the couch and rest my head on my arms, looking out the window. The people pass by me without a glance. Pink skin, green skin, purple skin. Hats as tall as the wearer. Big, fluffy shirts and dresses. What was in these people's minds? Insanity! You can tell by all the swirls tatooed to their bodies. Some capitolite actually takes a glance at me, and I raise my eyebrows in consent of seeing them. That always made capitolites hurry by me. An Avox - tellable by my white tunic. But this one doesn't move along. She keeps staring at me. What's her problem? I stare back, with my eyebrows furrowed. Silly thing to do, truly. This girl doesn't look too much like the rest of them, in their extravagant, hideous outfits. She looks almost plain, but with a few things making her look capitolesque.

I keep staring back in thought, wondering when she'll move on. Haven't I always been a curious one? I tilit my head. This was like a game of who would leave first. Her - walking away, or me - hopping off the couch. I'll win this with ease, unless Laura calls for me. Which better not happen. I gesture my hand with a raise. It merely goes up, and I put it back down, waiting for any sign of response or plain boredom, resulting in a walk away. Eh, who cares. Not like I have anything better to do.

Suddenly the person backs up from me, and looks in another direction. I look over and see another capitolite stnding around, coming in the direction, and get a small little thought in the back of my head. Could this girl be an Avox? The look of fear on her face is unmistakable for that of a frightened Avox. She waves for me to come, but I wouldn't go as far as to leave the house. Especially with Laura home. She darts away, and I get down from the couch. Luck to her, I guess.

I start towards the hallway, until I spot out the back window, the girl again. She's knocking on the window, and I hear Laura. Panic sets in and I dart quickly into the hallway. Ignoring the door. "There you are!" She says. I lean my head a bit to the side, looking at the window and the Avox's frightened face. How do I get rid of Laura? Nonetheless, her? Suddenly the knocking gets louder, and Laura starts turning to the living room. I rush in front of her and start moving against her. "What-?" she starts, and I hold up a finger. "Okay fine, answer the door, but whoever it is make them to go away, and come to my room immediatly after, or you'll be in deep trouble," She says. I nod my head vigorously and rush to the window, glancing behind me as Laura leaves.

I lean against the window and scowl. Go away. I want to tell her. But could I do it? I couldn't leave her out there - her ownder might be trying to hurt her. Of course, I might just get hurt too if I was caught helping her. Maybe not specifically by Laura, but by some peacekeeper, most likely. Or worse. With a sigh I walk to the back door and turn the lock as slowly as I can, to make it quiet. It clicks and I open it a crack. Poking my head out, I nod my head inside to the girl, and open it wide enoughf or her to slip in.

The girl slips by me. I am relieved she bothers to wipe her feet, at least. A knock is at the door, and I look over to see the capitolite from earlier standing there. The girl gets jumpy and darts downstairs. Wait - no! Not down there! She'd get stuck in there, no doubt. The knock gets louder, and I hear Laura's footsteps coming from the hallway. Oh no no no no no! "I told you to make them go away!" She says. I look between the door, Laura, and the steps to downstairs. Whay is this happening to me?! Letting that Avox in was probably one of my biggest mistakes, ever. I groan and push my body towards the hallway, but Laura stops my with her ice-feeling hand and propels me forward, towards the door. I shut my eyes.

Then I gurgle at her. It's all I can think to do, and it makes her stop a moment and release me. "Stop that nonsense." She says, walking past me. I look around frantically. Do I run downstairs? Wait to see what happened? I'm so confused! I stay rooted to the spot, but my eyes linge rover by the stairs, trying to see down for teh girl. She'll be in trouble, and me too. Thanks a lot, total stranger.
