September ran up the stairs and into her little room. She slammed the door and closed with a loud noise that caused the whole house to shake. She didn’t care if it was loud or if the others were disturbed by the noise or if the others knew that she was upset. In fact she didn’t care about anything anymore. She just wanted to forget and run away. Or, even better, just cease to exist. She wondered if anybody would actually notice that she was gone. September threw herself on her bed and tossed a blanket over her head. She didn’t want to hear them anymore; she just wanted to be left alone. Left alone in her misery and in her anger. All she wanted was to cry and so she did. Big tears started to roll down her cheeks. September sobbed and tried to block out the memories of what just happened, but of course she couldn’t.

The day had started out fairly good. No, actually it had started out really good. Better than most days in District Six. School had been interesting and her math teacher had even complimented her on her excellent homework. After school, she went to the boy she was tutoring and his mom gave her a piece of the cake she had just made. Cake was a rare treat for September, so she savored every single bite. It had been truly delicious. The blonde girl had been smiling big when she left her classmates house and wandered down the street towards her home. September was proud of her. She, for once, had a little money to contribute. She didn’t earn as much money as the others and she felt bad about that a lot. She felt bad, because she lived off of the money the others brought home and she ate the food they bought for all of them while she didn’t earn anything. Today it would be a better day. She could feel the coins in her pocket. No empty pockets today.

A big smile flashed across Septembers face as she opened the door. She sniffed and could smell fresh, cooked food. Meat. They didn’t have meat for over a week. It was a really good day today. September threw her shoes in the corner and almost ran to the sink to wash her hands. Ary, who almost always prepared the food for the family didn’t like dirty hands on the table and she didn’t want her to be angry. September, now with clean almost sparkling hands, sat down on the table and smiled at the rest of the group of people she called her family. Dinner started out just fine. The food was delicious and September felt full afterwards, a feeling she didn’t have often. She should have known that the day was just a little bit too perfect. Days like this didn’t happen. At least not in District Six.

It started when the boys started talking about their jobs and about the money they earned. September stuck her hand in her pocket, pulled out the few coins she had earned and placed them on the table, feeling proud. It didn’t happen often, that she was able to do that. Marcello looked at her, then on the money and back at her and her heart started racing, expecting some words of praise from him. Instead she earned a rather bored look and a shrug of his shoulders before he took the coins without saying anything else. Septembers mouth fell open and she stared at him. She had received not a single word, no thank you, no nothing! Marcello turned and just asked: “ What do you want? Praise? Worship? For these few coins?” September could feel her cheeks burning and tried to blink hard to hold back the tears that starts welling up in her eyes. It was so unfair. She knew that she was old enough to earn money. She really tried to earn money, with the after school tutoring and some other little daily jobs. And now that she did earn something it wasn’t enough for them. No, actually she wouldn’t care as much if it was January or Ary that gave her crap about not brining home enough money. It was Marchello telling her that her efforts weren’t good enough that made her feel so bad. Marchello, who she wanted to impress so much. Marchello, who she really wanted to notice her in a positive way. Marchello, who she secretly fancied. September bit her lip and jumped out of her chair, knowing she couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. She stormed up the stairs and into her room, slamming her door shut.

It had been a long night with Logan the night before, though the cash in her pocket had made it all worth it...sort of. She was getting tired of the way he wanted more, wanting her to stay and the lavish gifts. It wasn't right. She was just his whore, he needed to realize she wasn't Roxie. She was just someone who needed money and was getting it the only way she knew how. Too bad it means me being a worthless hooker, but if it keeps the kids in clothes and food on the table then its all worth it in the end.

Slipping into bed only a few hours before getting the kids up for bed she couldn't help but yawn her way through breakfast and tidying up, before collapsing in a heap on the ragged couch in the living room, pulling a tattered blanket around her as her eyes shuttered close. She should be cleaning, prepping for dinner, anything but sleeping but some days you just couldn't help it. Before she could realize that she had drifted off the door banged open and the troops piled in. When you live in a house with eleven other people, sometimes peace and quiet was the the last thing you could find.

The meal was wonderful, having meat for the first time in ages, and it seemed like for once everyone had settled into their routines, and even little September had shown that she had brought home some money to contribute to their house. Ary's cheeks glowed with pride, but the snide comment from March had set the dinner on its ear as September fled from the table and the others sat in shocked silence as the slamming of the door echoed through the house. Leaning over and whispering in January's ear Ary mumbled something about keeping everyone else happy and that she'd go check on things. Sending a dirty glance at March she headed up the stairs and knocked on the door softly before opening and coming in. "September, its me. Are you okay?"

A small smile crossed her face as she saw the lumps on the bed and the young girl with the blanket tossed over her. This was about more than the snark, it was the person who said it. No one could miss the glances she threw at March. Settling down on the edge of the bed she patted September's legs. "Do you want to talk about it?"

As soon as the blanket covered her, everything went silent. All the noises, the chatter from downstairs, the cracking of the floor and the sound of wind blowing around the house were silenced. The whole world seemed to be shut out in this little spot where September allowed herself to cry and sob. She crumbled together in a fetal position and wrapped her arms around her knees. She wanted to be as small as possible and maybe, just maybe she would vanish altogether. She was sure the others wouldn’t even notice if she just disappeared into thin air. The only thing they would probably realize would be, that they each got more food to themselves because there was one mouth less to feed. September lets out a deep sigh in the middle of all her sobs. She knew herself that she didn’t contribute enough for the family, but she would be able to pay a lot once she got done with school. She was good in school and she was sure that she would be able to get a good job once she was done. A job that would at least pay the bills and help the rest to get some good food on the table.

For a minute or so it was nice and quiet underneath her blanket, but the thin blanket couldn’t lock out the sound of steps on the stairs. September crouched together even more. She wanted to be alone but here in this house, you never had privacy. Somebody always had to come and check on you or disturb you when all you really wanted was to be left alone. At first September hoped, that whoever walked up the stairs would just walk past her room and leave her alone but this hope was destroyed when she heard the steps cease right in front of the door to her room. Great! Couldn’t they just leave her alone? The only person she wanted to see was Marchello. Marchello, who came into her room and apologized, who said sorry for the things he just said and that he was proud of her that she at least brought some money home. She wanted to hear him say sorry, but she knew him well enough that he would never do that. At least not without anybody, Ary for example, forcing him to apologize. The chanced of him being the one in front of her door were slim. Plus, the steps she just heard were too quiet, too soft. They didn’t sound like Marchellos steps.

September heard a soft knock on her door. She didn’t want anybody talking to her. She was embarrassed by her actions. She really hated the fact, that she started crying because of the smallest things. Especially if Marchello was part of these things. September bit on her lip and didn’t reply to the knock on the door. Maybe the person who stood outside would just leave it at that, realize that she wanted to be left alone and leave without entering her room. But she didn’t have luck. The door opened with its usual squeal and September felt rage forming in her stomach. Why couldn’t she just be left alone. Just this one time. Was this too much to ask for? “September, it’s me. Are you ok?” The rage in her stomach vanished almost instantly as soon as Arys voice filled the air. The young girl let out a sigh but didn’t reply. She wasn’t ok. She was far from being ok.

She could feel the mattress move as Ary sat down next to her. “Do you want to talk about it?” , Ary asked her and September sniffed. No, she didn’t want to talk about it. In fact: What was there to talk about. Marchello had been mean to her and he had been right somehow. She dried her tears with her sleeve and slowly stuck her head out from underneath the blanket. September bit her lip and looked at Ary with a sad and miserable look. “It’s so unfair.” , she started and wiped away another tear that appeared in her eye. “I didn’t want praise or anything, Ary. I know that I don’t bring home enough money and that all of you have to work even more to feed me, but I really, really try…” Once she got going it was hard to stop the words flowing out of her mouth and it was even harder to stop the tears that started appearing more and more in her eyes. “I was so happy today that I got some money for tutoring that other boy. His mom even gave me a little bit more because her son got a good grade on his last test. It was so great and then we had meat tonight and it was so good and everything seemed just so perfect. And then… and then…” She covered her eyes again and started sobbing again. It took a while before she was able to talk again. Her voice was just a little whisper when she continued. “Why does he have to be so mean to me?” , she asked Ary. Maybe she did want to talk about the real problem she had after all.
