To The Sky
The stone bench is cold and hard, nothing like the pleasantly cool grass I’d enjoyed in my dream last night. With the weather as of late any grass that could grow here in District Three has died and turned an ugly brownish-yellow and the ground is alternately baked hard, or a muddy mess due to the infrequent, but harsh thunderstorms.
I shift slightly, hoping to alleviate the growing pain in my lower back, but it doesn’t really help. I sigh, and again wonder why I come here almost every morning. But I know the answer. This is the only place in District 3 where you can see through the smog of the factories and really see the sky. But even here, you can only get a hint of blue in the earliest hours of the morning before the factories begin work. And so this is why I’m here, sitting on a stone bench and staring up at the oranges and pinks of the sky as the sun begins to rise.
I pull my sweater closer around myself as a cool breeze blows past me. This early in the morning it is still relatively cool. In a few hours however, the sun will have raised the temperature far too high to be able to really enjoy the outdoors. Within minutes you’d be covered in sweat and craving water.
I shift again and decide to head back home soon. In the distance I can see the beginnings of motion around the factories and soon my view will be gone. I stare up at the sky, wishing I could disappear into it. It’s always been my dream to fly, and more recently to be able to escape into the expanse of the sky.
A nearby bird chirps and I glance over to it. It isn’t a bird I immediately recognize and before I really realize what I’m doing, I chirp back. To my surprise the bird looks over to me and chirps again.
What a strange bird.
I am about to reply again when I hear footsteps behind me. The bird, startled, flees into the sky. I stare after it, a strange forlornness taking over me. Pushing that aside, I glance behind me intent on discovering who it is that scared away my interesting friend.
