It was the afternoon sun that greeted me when I woke up curled on the couch. I groaned, rubbing the grit from my eyes, and forced my aching body to sit up. The muscles of my shoulders and back screamed from their overuse last night, but I forced them into a yawning stretch that released some of the tension. I worked the kink out of my neck and stood up, shaking graveyard dirt from my hair in clothes.
I spent most of the night digging up dead people and relieving them of their valuable possessions. The shop had had a bad month, so I spent longer than normal to compensate for that, and my body had taken beating because of it. I hobbled over to bathroom leaned heavily against the sink, inspecting myself in the mirror. Dark bruises underscored my eyes, making them appear darker than usual, dirt streaked my face, and my hair was an absolute rat’s nest framing my face. In short, I looked like I felt, which is to say, like shit.
I turned on the faucet, ran my hands under the water and splashed it on to my face. The jolt of cold water woke me up fully, and made me even more aware of my aches and pains. I ran my hands through my mass of curly hair, trying to tame it even a little, but it’s no use. I shrug it off, knowing full well that there is no reason for me to look nice anyway. Who do I have to impress?
I went to my room and changed out of my grave robbing clothes (black and sturdy), and pulled on a loose fitting plaid shirt and some worn jeans. Working in a taxidermy shop did not really call for nice clothes. I stretched on last time and made my way downstairs to the shop. Lou was manning the counter since I had been sleeping. “You should have woken me up, kid.” I scolded him halfheartedly as I joined him behind the counter. I was actually grateful that he had let me sleep in. We didn’t have any orders to fill today, and I really needed the sleep. But I hated that I needed to sleep in.
“Anybody come in today?” I asked, hopeful. I looked around, looking for any request sheets but there weren’t any. I sighed, my question answered for me. “Never mind, I already know.” If this kept up, we’d need to make another trip to the grave yard. “I’ll take over the shop. You can go do whatever. It isn’t busy so we both don’t need to be here.” I sat down at the worktable positioned behind the counter, and stared at the cat armature I was creating.
