Essence weighs at one-hundred-twelve pounds, which isn't exactly heavy for a girl at the age of 17. But living in District Ten has it's ups and downs -most of the residents in District Ten can't afford the needed food, and she eats what she has, but getting enough isn't always a simple task. She also finds herself never exactly getting her stomach filled. She just reaches five feet and four inches, which isn't very tall, and Essence would prefer to be much taller. Essence would prefer to be taller because tall people seem more 'intimitading' at times and she dislikes when boys are sexist - she wants them to know (or at least think) girls can be just as tough. She isn't a very flexible person, so stretching doesn't help her. And her dad and mom aren't the tallest people in the world, so her height comes from... well, it's a no-brainer. She doesn't hate her height too much, so she doesn't go around saying, "Oh my gosh, I hate my height so much!" She just shrugs her shoulders and moves on with life. She wasn't one to question the simple things, like why birds fly, or why the sun rises and sets every night. She didn't stop growing yet, but the thing is, she doesn't know that five feet and four inches is the average height for a female adult.
Her skin tone is fairly light, or fairly dark, it doesn't really make a difference since it just reaches a tan color in which Essence can say that she isn't pale. She's also proud to say that she doesn't easily get burned. Even though Essence stays outside a lot, she doesn't always get sunburn, which is good, since it saves money, time, and her sensitive skin. Her skin also bruises easily. Most of her skin is rough, but her hands - and her face - are soft, mainly because those are the only places she thinks to moisturize most of the time. The bottom of feet are usually dry and have dead skin. Essence has a habit of peeling the dead skin, and not using things like skin lotion. the skin on her face is dotted with pimples and zits though, but Essence ignores them, no matter how tempting it is to pop one - this saves her money, because she doesn't have to buy skin care regimen and other facial products. Essence's parents liked it better if they didn't have to waste money to make their daughter's face 'pretty.'
Essence has acne on her face, blame those teenage hormones. Essence doesn't get any thing to get rid of them, and the zits and pimples may get worse and leave red blotches when they're gone. The red spots look unhealthy on her face. She also has freckles from the sun. You can easily see the orange dots on her slightly tan skin, though there isn't a lot and they seem to be fading away every week. Her freckles give her a sort of friendly, childish look. When she has acne scars and freckles in the same area, it looks really strange; like the colors yellow and green mixing, and in that case, her parents might help her out and get her something to fix up her face. Normally though, she has the same face was lotion for about a year, since she barely uses it, and knows how to save money. Her head is... small - that's the first thing people normally think when they look at her face. It would probably be shaped like a perfect oval if her chin wasn't there. Her chin is smooth, but if she had a cleft chin, she'd call it a 'butt-chin', Essence finds that pretty funny.
Essence's hair is orange. When people say her hair is red, she doesn't understand why they think that; since it's clearly orange. Reaching the bottom of her ears, Essence;s hair is pretty short. In the summer, the short length helps, since she doesn't have as much hair and won't sweat a lot. in the winter it's not too terrible, she still has enough hair to keep her heated. Her hair is extremely curly, and it almost looks like it's artificial. But, believe it or not, her hair isn't curly because of a curling iron. If she were to actually straighten her orange hair, it would probably make it at least five inches longer. In the sun-light her hair looks blond. Of course in the sun, it doesn't look completely blond, more like straw-berry blond. Her hair is thin, but feels rough. She washes her hair at least five times a week, but it never feels a bit soft. Sometimes, she has a bang to the right side. Sometimes she likes to wear stuff in her hair. On some days, she might feel like just wearing a headband, but on other days, she'll wear a purple bow. All the items in her hair were handed down from her mom. She also loves the feeling when someone runs their hand through her curly hair. It's also a pain for her to brush it, so she normally just lets it be, and it usually falls into place.
Essence has slightly dull eyes. They're gray, and can't get much more boring. The only thing a little bit interesting about them is that if you look from a really far distance, they look like a light shade of blue. Yet, if you look extremely close, you can see tiny flecks of a dark green. The eyes are shaped like almonds, and are very big, showing her iris and pupil a lot more than some people's. Essence doesn't wear any type of make-up on her eyes. No eye-liner or mascara. She likes her eyes the way they are. Though sometimes if she stays up late, she'll have some bags underneath her large eyes. Her eyes turn red when she's crying. The truth is, even though Essence has boring gray eyes, she still likes them, and maybe of of the things she likes the most about herself.
Of course her eyes have eyelashes on her eyelids and eyebrows right above them. Even though there isn't a spot of black hair on her body, her eyelashes are the darkest color. Essence's black eyelashes are actually very thin, and never covered with mascaraor whatever goes on girl's eyelashes. Her eyebrows are simply the color of her orange hair, but, they are a little lighter. Her eyebrows are what some people would call 'soft angled.' They're thin, and she does get her eyebrows waxed for a treat like, three times a year. You can't always see her right eyebrow since Essence's bangs might cover it. The only reason Essence likes her eyelashes and eyebrows is because if she took them off, she'd look like a freak.
Don't worry, Essence has a nose right in-between her two eyes, and above her lips. Her nose is what some people would call 'bulbous'. Her nose is small, and wide. It also almost looks like her nose is squished and bulging. Essence's nostrils are really small, but since her nose is small too, her nostrils and her nose look like a perfect match. Essence sneezes a lot, especially during winter - when a lot of sicknesses are going around - and spring - since she's allergic to the pollen on the flowers. She obviously gets the little hairs out of nose with tweezers if they begin to overgrow. Her tiny nose sort of goes good with her small head and facial structure.
Yes, Essence has two ears which are connected to her small, freckle-covered head. They're small, but you can't exactly tell since her curly locks hide them. They're red, for an unknown reason. When she hears something she likes, her ears can easily hear it. But at loud noises, she covers her ear-holes with her hands. She has no piercings in them what-so-ever. The thing is, her right ear is just a little bit bigger than her left ear, but it's not like you could see them. Essence uses Q-Tips to clean out her ears about three times a week. She cares about her hi-gene and doesn't want to look like a messy slob.
The cheeks on her face look almost pudgy - mainly because her small head squishes them in. But, she does have some extra fat there in which you could easily squeeze. They're small and wide, and don't have any little bits of hair on them. She eats with nice manners so not a lot of food - if any - is really on her cheeks. When she eats, they seem to bulge out. And when she talks, they seem to appear like she's eating a food. Also, if she opens her mouth up, they seem to appear sullen and thinner. Her cheeks are dotted with a lot of freckles, actually, her cheeks are the only place on her face that has freckles on them. Same with most acne. Essence's cheeks are redder than most of the parts on her body. If she's holding her breath, her cheeks blow up a like a blow-fish.Awkward can't even begin to explain how weird typing this paragraph was.
She has medium-sized lips. They're actually not dull, but a bright, pink color. When she gets nervous, she bites down on them. There aren't any scars on them. During the winter, she seems to lick her lips a lot, leaving them chapped and stinging - and in this case, Essence has lib-balm. She never covers her lips with lip-stick. The cupid's bow above her upper-lip is easily visible. The space between her lips and nose is pretty much one inch. On the left and right side of her lips, it seems to grow even more narrow. Her lips seem to move easily and freely when she talks - her voice doesn't sound extremely high, but isn't low, and it sounds friendly. When she gets surprised, her jaw drops and her mouth is wide open. Her mouth is practically medium-sized like her lips.
To go along with her lips, he jaw is medium, but crooked. When she smiles, the right side of her lips slants upward, while the left is going downward. Her teeth are yellow. She doesn't always brush her teeth, though she tries to look her best. She also only flosses like, twice a month. Her parents could never afford braces for her. Her front teeth are much bigger than the rest of her small teeth. Even though all thirty-two are there, at least three are chipped. She might use mouth-wash once in a while, but all that does it make her breath smell good, and removes [some] germs on her teeth. Sometimes, she doesn't smile because she's ashamed of her bad teeth and slanted smile.
Her neck is four inches and seven centimeters, which is considered only a little bit shorter than most people's. Even though her neck is short, it's thin and isn't chunky. Her shoulders are sloping, but it's hard for people to tell. If she wears shirts with out any sleeves - such as tank-tops - for too long her shoulders turn red, but the rest of her body turns red. After her shoulders are done getting burnt, they peel and turn pale and ashy.
Essence's arms are the perfect size for her height. They aren't thin, but they actually have some muscle on them. She isn't someone who just sits around all day. Of course, her hands are connected to her arms. Her hands are chubby, unlike most parts of her body. Her hands are sort of pale, and have slight scars of pen marks on them, especially her palm. Her fingers are all intact, and they're all so very short. They all bend in normal ways. Through the day her fingernails get filled with dirt and other stuff, but she always washes them out. She doesn't put nail-polish on her fingers, but she does have a silver ring that her mom gave to her lat year. Her fingers are also thin, even though they are short, and they feel rough at most times. She used to have a blister on her left pinky-finger from... well, it was just there for an unknown reason. She suspects it was from a day when she was working with cattle - she was trying to 'lasso' in an animal, except got rope-burn, which formed the blister. It's probably been there since she was about eleven.
She has a pair of legs that are a medium length. Her thighs are jiggly with fat and she hates them... a lot. Sometimes she tries running to restore their thinness, yet it isn't working. Her shins are bruised up from her walking into low down objects. Her legs also might grow little hairs at times, but she normally shaves them off. Her knees bend in a funny way, but when she wakes up they're a bit stiff. Her feet are small and smell horribly. Essence makes sure to put baby-powder in them sometimes. Her toes have fungus on them, but she puts cream on the daily, and they're only getting better by the week.
Her stomach is thin, and she could easily count her ribs in the mirror. Her belly-button is an 'outie,' but it doesn't stick out too much. Her back has some bacne (acne on the back) on it. Her birth-mark is right next to her left nipple - and some say the birthmark is shaped like a puppy-dog. But, her back does have good posture, and when she sits, her back is as straight as an arrow. She doesn't have any back dimples or scars on her back.
Even though it's hard for Essence to afford clothes, she doesn't like to dress terrible. She would never ever, never ever, never ever, never ever, wear a striped shirt with plaid pants or something yellow with something green. She would wear a white t-shirt with a pink tank-top over it, with some light-blue pants. Her trick is layers. If she's wearing a skirt, she'll normally put leggings underneath. In the summer, she wears light clothes - maybe a pink tank-top with some gray shorts. In the fall, her clothes begin to shift to a more warm nature - perhaps two shirts (layers!) with some denim jeans. In winter, her fashion sense dies a bit, she only wears color-coordinated stuff, because she mainly worries about staying warm. In the spring, her clothes are like the ones in summer. She doesn't have too much clothing, but; she makes it work.
Clothing is basically wear she draws the line with fashion. She doesn't wear any lip-stick or mascara. No face-wash or blush was ever used by her. She feels that using make-up is1. making yourself look fake. 2. a waste of money. 3. a waste of time. But, she does tend to wear string bracelets that she made herself. Essence also might put some of her string creations on her ankle. She also wears a locket her grandmother gave her before she passed away - it has a picture of Essence's grandma and her on her fifth birthday.

"Look at me everyone! I'm sooo bisexual!" Sometimes, Essence likes to keep to herself. Most of the time though, Essence is loud and herself. Her favorite color{s} without a doubt are orange and yellow, which look like the colors of fire, and Essence loves heat. Her favorite foods are usually meat, like chicken or turkey. But, she does enjoy foods like salad or pasta. Some people would say that Essence's name means the most important and significant aspect. Essence doesn't entirely understand what that means.. But she thinks it sounds 'nifty.'
Well, the first thing people normally notice about her is that she's very musical. Even though she lives in District Ten, which isn't very wealthy, she has a piano, cello, and flute. Although juggling the three instruments at the same time makes her as busy as a bee, she has the commitment to stay on track. Her mom and dad don't exactly enjoy having to pay for all this -- they also don't always like the noise -- but they just thought that one day her daughter would be making money off this, and hey, what kind of daughter would Essence be if she didn't lend her mom and dad some money once in a while? Along with playing the three instruments, she also has a good singing voice, and sometimes she'll sing to the songs she plays on the piano or cello -- she would sing to her flute songs, but that's nearly impossible. She also has a thing for poetry, and sometimes makes up her own poems.
A lot of times Essence has dreams about random stuff. She seems to make these dreams into signs. If her dream includes her hair being in a different style, she suspects that something in her life would change. Actually, one time she had a dream about a plane almost hitting the ground, but then making a comeback, the next day, she almost lost her singing voice, but then it came out twice as good. Essence isn't exactly gullible, and doesn't believe everything she hears, but she gives into superstitions. She doesn't like the number '13.' Also, she tries her best not to spill salt -- walking under ladders are also a big no-no for her. On rainy days, she makes sure her umbrella is NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER, opened INSIDE.
Truthfully, Essence would much rather be in a different District, one where they grow up to be doctors or whatever. She's really good with healing cuts, burns, scratches, or anything. One Essence turns around twenty years of age or so, she wants to move to District Two, where they work with medicine, or, any District in which she can work with music. To go along with helping others out, Essence has a need to protect people, especially people younger than her. If a ten year old is getting taunted by some stupid teenagers, Essence would stick of for them. She has a short temper -- and she's a girl who isn't scared to throw a punch. One thing that blows her top is when someone calls her a ginger. She also gets pissed off when people make grammar mistakes, and corrects them a lot. When she tries to fix peoples mistakes, they normally get mad at her for pointing out their mistakes. All Essence wants to do is help someone out, but she can't do that if they're yelling at her.
She doesn't exactly hunt, but her dad used to go in the woods to get his family some food. The only weapon Essence ever used besides her fists was an arrow -- along with some bows. Although she isn't scared to kick someone in the soft spot, killing a rabbit or a chipmunk didn't seem right to her. Sure, she didn't mind too much, but she thought it wasn't really fair that they had no defense. But, Essence was proud of her self, she wasn't half bad, though she only killed two rodents in one day. Personally, Essence isn't one to live regrets, so she sort of just murdered two animals and forgot about it the day after. She doesn't sweat the little things, in fact, she hardly cares about anything she does as long as it isn't illegal. Well, that last sentence was sort of a lie. She wouldn't go all sex-crazy and sleep with twenty guys in a night. But, Essence rarely feels guilty, even if she did do something wrong.
Her fears are more-or-less normal. One of her biggest fears are heights -- she prefers her feet touching the dirt on the ground. Essence also doesn't like slimy things, like worms or snakes -- also, caterpillars, a little bit. A strange fear of Essence's is that she's scared of tether ball -- a sport where you attempt to hit a ball on a pole. She's also scared of loud noises -- especially when they're unexpected. One of the things that Essence has no problem with is water, although she never really been in an ocean before, she sort of loves the rain, it feels so refreshing on her skin. Essence also likes splashing in puddles of rain and mud.
Essences is bisexual. Yeah, she's sort of proud to be herself and everything, but she doesn't go around saying,
Essence has what some would say is a 'potty mouth'. She claims it's her way of 'verbally expressing' herself. She swears, but she usually uses the palm of her hands to cover her mouth, leaving the disgusting words muffled in the wind. She also hates The Hunger Games, although no one she knew died in them, she thinks they're twisted and sickening. She also doesn't understand why Districts 1,2 and 4 get to 'Train' for it. Maybe if District Ten got to 'Train' she would have a different view on The Games. If Essence was in The Games, she'd hope to win, yet she doubts that would happen. She'd try her best and see what would happen. Well, that's what she said. And trust me, Essence isn't really one to break a single promise.
Normally Essence thinks positive, and can actually tend to be naive. Although it's good to think realistic, she doesn't like thinking negative. Thinking positive means you have good confidence in yourself, and Essence does have a lot of confidence most of the time. She also has high self-esteem -- but sometimes she gets envious over little things, like kids who live with their real parents, or girls that are popular. Essence likes to talk a lot, but sometimes she has no one to talk to, which makes her feel really lonely and can get her sad. But most of the time, if you're around Essence, you can feel positivity running through the air. Essence likes some people, but anyone homophobic and gross annoys her. She's really careful when it comes to dealing with germs. And since she's bisexual, if someone were to judge her for a little thing about her, it would be wrong.

Elaine Othello and Dodger Nemad met one day at a library. It wasn't really strange they were both there on the same day, the two bookworms always had their nose stuck into a novel. Elaine had dropped a book and Dodger - being the gentlemen he was - picked it up for her. From there, they hit it off. The began dating a year later. Three years after that, when they were both twenty-three, Dodger asked Elaine to marry him, she - of course - said yes. They bought a small house that was very cozy and fit them fine. Dodger and Elaine both worked with animals - they specifically farmed. A year after they were married, Elaine got pregnant with Dodger's baby.
The baby girl was born during The 40th Hunger Games on exactly September 4. The name Essence was pretty to Elaine and Dodger, so that's how she got her first name. Her last name was something they didn't exactly have a choice over. Essence learned to talk at only seven months, and took her first steps at nine months. Everything seemed good until her parents died.Essence doesn't like talking about it, but this is what happened --|| EDIT: Essence's adopted parents told her about what happened, as they didn't want her to think of something to horrible --
It was any normal day, and Elaine and Dodger Nemad were working with the animals, it was cold - around 10 degrees - and extremely windy. Even wrapped up in three jackets each, the were cold to the bone. Elaine and Dodger cam in coughing and sneezing, they were convinced they had a cold. But after they were still sick for three weeks, they went to the hospital and found out they had pneumonia. The doctor said most of the time, pneumonia is caused from temperatures 30 to 50 degrees. A year later, Essence's parents died, leaving her in custody to no one.
At the age of two, Essence went up for adoption and was adopted by the Fei's, a small Asian family with another daughter. But Essence makes everyone call her Essence NEMAD, not Essence FEI. It was painful for Essence at first, no one really deserves to be two and have dead parents. But since she was little, she didn't understand how bad it really was. The cool thing was, Artemisa, Essence's 'sister' had the same birthday as Essence and they were the same age. To this day, Artemisa and Essence always had a strange relationship. One day, they'd be competing over who can run faster, and the next day, they'd be helping each other with homework. They would fight sometimes, too. But at the end of the day, Essence still loved Artemisa like a sister.
When Essence was eight, something frightening happened - her 'sister' was lost. Essence remembers coming hope with Artemisa from school. While Essence was picking at a flower, a storm started and she rushed into her house. It took them two days to find Artemisa - and believe me, Essence, and her parents were worried a lot. But before you know it, Artemisa was sort of fine, but Essence's sister goes to therapy for her fears, such as claustrophobia and hydrophobia. It was weird growing up without her real parents. Essence remembers getting dropped off to school by people who didn't even share her blood, or last name, or appearance. She also remembers her first reaping. Her 'parents' led her to stand there, assuring her that nothing bad was going to happen. Her parents were always sort of nice. It was always weird meeting up with 'relatives' - because, obviously, Essence was the only one without any Asian features, plus, she was the only one there who wasn't really part of the family.
When Essence was fourteen, she knew she was bisexual. She knew this for two reasons.1. She had a crush on a boy.At first, Essence was scared, paranoid. You think she wanted people knowing this? Essence would rather keep to herself. Her problems were solved when strangely - and ironically - the boy she liked and the girl she liked starting dating. She came out shortly after-wards, realizing that if it bothered someone, they weren't a real friend.
2. She also liked a girl.
Essence's sister always wanted to be a rancher while growing up, but Essence wanted to do nothing with animals. She wants to be a musician, after-all - she makes money by playing music. But in District Ten, she didn't have to much of a choice. It's just that Essence wants to be happy. Today, Essence is happy, alive, and well.
It was about the time that the smoke came out of mounds.
Well after I could tell that we were heading south.
You had no problem lighting that match in my head
But now I have been b u r n t.
Well after I could tell that we were heading south.
You had no problem lighting that match in my head
But now I have been b u r n t.
