Everyone is much larger than you except for the younger, but even then you’re about their size. It doesn’t help your image much that you received a two for a training score. Small and weak, that’s what you are. Of course, you realized this early on. You would much rather run and cower from a fight as opposed to standing to defend yourself because you’re not that type of person. All throughout growing up you were used to immediately surrendering and turning belly-up but you know that will get you killed right off the bat in the Games. I need to at least try to fight. Show them that my training score doesn’t reflect what I’m capable of. Would it be worth it, though? As of right now you’ve portrayed yourself as an easy target, so why not play up that image until you actually have to fight for yourself? Show them what you’re made of. But what am I made of? You’re nothing but skin, bones, and burns; there’s no courage or bravery or willingness to hurt someone.
Your hands fiddle around with a lighter from the fire making station. It’s a contraption you’ve never seen before, so much smaller than your old torch and yet just as effective. Part of you wants to just slip it quietly into your pocket to take with you but you fear that you’ll be caught. Your eyes scan briefly around you and then plant their gaze onto the small rectangle, your thumb pressing down on a roller and then a small plate. Sparks fly and then a small flame leaps up right up, warming the skin of your thumb. For a moment you consider sticking your thumb closer to the fire but you decide against it. I need to stay as healthy as I can for the Games. Your thumb lifts off the pedal and the flame instantly extinguishes itself. Will I die that fast? You quickly shake your head to chase away the thought, clenching your hand around the lighter and looking at the rest of the items displayed to create life-giving – or life-taking – fire.
