It was a cold mid-autumn morning, as I rush out of the house, my siblings Sage and Rosette followed me from behind. My father watched us from the window of our kitchen. He was holding a mug of coffee. Out of the cold, I can see the steam out of dad's coffee mug.
"Scarlett!" My dad said. I turned around. "School. Not work!" He said, reminding me not to skip school again.
I've been skipping school a lot, due to my work as a delivery girl in the district's finest textile company and also a part time cashier in the bakery since they order milk from us and other dairies we produce for their ingredients in pastries and bread.
I nodded and we waved goodbye to him.
"Scarlett, do you promise me not to miss school today?" Rosette said. "Do you?" Her round innocent brown eyes looks at her deeply.
I smiled and nod as I hug my books hard to my chest. "Yes, I promise." I said, gripping the strap of my small back pack that contains my pen, my coin purse, and my notebooks.
"I don't want to go to school." Sage said. He started to scratch his red hair again. His habit when he gets irritated that comes along with "the face" again. "The face" means his usual facial expression when he gets irritated and you don't want to see that.
"Here's something, I'll walk you guys to your building, and we'll meet by lunch, and I'll fetch you after class." I said. "How's that sound? By that I won't really escape school today."
Both of my siblings smiled and hugged me. "Thank you thank you!" Rosette said. "Don't worry, I know you won't escape, you're not wearing your usual get up when working, the leather jacket, the walking boots, the punk get up." She said.
I giggled. "Okay, I get it." Well, I'm not really comfortable with my clothes right now. My usual school clothes, the blouse and skirt plus the flats. I sighed.
When we reached the elementary building, I hugged them both. "See you at lunch and dismissal!" Rosette said. I smiled and touched both of her long braid locks that I made this morning, letting my fingers slide to her delicate hair. Rosette's circle of safety. I call it that way, she told me she feels secure whenever I do that. So I do it almost all the time, since she asked me to. Before bed, before leaving or departing.
I kissed both of them goodbye and watched them leave. Sage from a far turned around again and wave goodbye to me. I waved back. Then I hurry off to my building, because I'm almost late.
As I reached my classroom, I heard Mrs. Georgie talks about the different ways to dye wool. Dying wool was one of my job, I don't know if I have to attend this class, I was now tempted to cut and run off to the bakery for my job. But... No. I promised my sibling and father to attend all my classes today.
So I knocked on the door. "Good morning Mrs. Georgie, sorry I'm late."
Mrs. Georgie looked at me. "Good morning, Ms. Velour. Late again? Good thing you have the right mind to attend today. Take a seat." Her brows raised but she shrugged off the feeling of being disturbed to what she was discussing.
I found an empty seat right next to a girl. She has eyes that are round, hazel-coloured with flecks of green, and she has long, brown, dishevelled hair. I guess again, like always in the classroom my hair stands out with its bright red scarlet color. It's not everyday you see a lot of red hair in district 8.
