Kidnapped, thats what happened to you. You should have had a good family, someone who loved you and treated you right but instead, you ended up as an experiment in a lab deep in the heart of district 6. No one knew who you were, and no one really ever cared about you. To them, you were nothing more than a lab rat. Just another thing to test their simulations on. You hated it, bitterly but you didn't fight because you didn't know any better. After all, you were taken when you were born so you had no memories of your parents before hand. Your older sister, Mendra, who'd been 2 at the time had also been taken. You'd both been thrown into rooms and the doors had been locked. You'd been scared and had cried for your sister because she was the only person you'd ever known as your family.
When you think back to what you felt like when they did the simulations on you, you don't really remember all that much of it because you were so young. Although, one incident will forever be engraved into your mind. It was when you finally escaped from that awful place.
"Mendra, I'm scared" your small voice says fearfully as you reach for your sisters hand. She looks down at you, her brown eyes the same color as yours and she squeezed your hand. "I know Claire bear but it will be alright, I promise" She says. You look at the people in the lab coats and shrink back against your sister. They've been testing on the two of you all day. Putting you through Simulation after simulation. Luckily, you haven't had any pain simulations but you don't really know that you're lucky. All you want is to get out of this scary place full of Monsters and scary things that you don't like. Your 6 year old brain isn't able to comprehend exactly what's going on. All it knows is that it has to keep you safe. You curl into a ball, holding your knees as you wait for the next simulation to start. It doesn't and instead a loud beaping noise goes off. This confuses you a lot. Your sister takes your hand and starts to lead you towards the door. You hear screaming and a screen flashes blindingly. At first, you think that this is just another simulation but as it turns out, something has gone wrong. Your sister lets go of your hand and tells you to run. You don't question it because you're only six and start to run as fast as you can. Hands rest on your back, pushing you forward, away from whatever is happening inside.
Your tiny lungs feel like they're about to explode and you have to stop. A pair of arms lifts you up and carries you the rest of the way as you try to catch your breath. You are so confused by what is going on that you can't help but cry. You want your sister. Where is she? As the person sets you down, you run as fast as your little legs can carry you to the door and bang on it. "Where's Mendra? I want Mendra" You yell at the man. He shakes his head. Just then, the door explodes open, knocking you back on your butt and you cry out as you land. It hurts. "Get up, Claire bear, we have to go" your sisters voice is comforting to your ears but there is an urgency in her voice that you don't understand. Wiping the snot off from your nose, you take your sisters hand and start to run. She lets go of your hand and you look back at her, confusion in your large brown eyes. "I love you, Claire bear, now go, run, and don't look back no matter what okay?" She says. You don't understand. "Why, Medra" You ask. You can't say Mendra because you can't pronounce N yet. She shakes her head. "Just do it, okay baby girl. I love you" She says before you see why she can't come. On her stomach is a long gash that's bleeding. "Medra, you're hurt." You say in a small voice. She nods. "I know, baby, go, don't worry about me, I'll be fine, I promise" She says, pushing you away. You get the hint and start running, away from those awful people that did this to your sister.
Your stomach growls, reminding you that you haven't eaten in days. You're a resourceful little girl though, and soon find some berries to eat. They're yummy as you bite into them and their sweet juices flood your mouth. You eat a few handfulls before you continue going. You realize, as you continue, that you are completely and utterly lost. "I wish Medra was here" You say softly. Suddenly, the bushes around you begin to rustle and you scream in terror. A few kids, older than you, appear out of the bushes. They don't look like they've been in the woods for long, all of them have relatively nice, if not worn, clothing, and they all have clean hair. Your usually curly and soft blonde hair is matted and your usually trusting brown eyes are scared. "W-who are you?" you ask the person nearest to you. "We are Miss Peregrines children" they reply. "You look like you're lost, little girl. Come on, we'll take you with us" A girl a little older than you says. You nod and take the girls outstretched hand.
The children take you to a small, well kept house and the first thing you hear is the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Where are we you wonder. The kids all rush inside but you are wary of this place. Would they be like the people in the lab? Would they hurt you or not like you. You kept asking these questions as you entered the house and was greeted by an elderly woman. She smiles at you and the girl lets go of your hand. "And what is your name, my dear?" The elderly lady asks. "Claire" You reply. "Well, Claire, I'm Miss Peregrine and this is the house of lost children. You seem very lost. Why don't we get you a bath and cleaned up, then you can tell me all that's happened" She says kindly. You decide that you will trust this lady.
Miss Peregrine leads you up the stairs to where a tub of water, full of steaming water waits. She helps you out of your old clothes and you step in the tub. The water is warm and feels very nice after so long of being cold out in the forest. You smile at her. "I'll let you get cleaned up while I go get you something to eat and wear" She says before leaving you alone in the bathroom. I like Miss Peregrie you think as you duck your head under the water.
By the time you're done, the water is brown with all the dirt that was on you but you are sparkling clean. Your hair is tangled but all the burrs are out of it and you can easily brush it. Miss Peregrine enters with a big towel and wraps it around you. "You're safe now, my dear. No one will hurt you here" She says as you dry off. You don't entirely believe her but you accept her kindness. You've never had anyone who was kind to you other than Mendra. The people in the lab were tolerant of you at best but they didn't care about you or love you in any way. To them, you were just another test subject, something to study and observe, you weren't a human, just Experemint number 4. The only reason you even have the name Claire is because Mendra always called you that. She said it was the name that mommy and daddy gave to you, not that you'll ever meat them. It's impossible for that.
Miss Peregrine gives you some clothes that are slightly too big for you but you don't mind. You're just happy that someone, for once, seems to care about you but you don't get your hopes up. The only person who was ever kind to you is probably dead right now, along with all the other experemints that were in that lab or they're still being tested on. You slip on the fabric over your tiny body and look at yourself in the mirror. You've never looked in a mirror before so you're surprised by what you see. is that me? you wonder. No it can't be me, but it does everything I do you think, lifting your arm experementally. The image in the mirror copies you. Wierd you think, letting your hand rest beside you. The lady did your hair in two braids going down the sides of your head. It had been a wierd experiance though, no one, except your sister, had ever touched your hair before or done anything nice to it. These braids were lovely. You would thank Miss Peregrine later.
---1 month later---
You don't talk much with the other kids but you are always there, like a shadow in the older kids' opinion. You follow them around but don't say anything so they let you hang out with them because you don't make a nussance of yourself. You've never told any of them where you came from or what happened to you but you feel like its none of their business. You'll tell them if you want to. You stand between two of the older girls who's names you never bothered to learn and try to pay attention to their conversation. You can't focus though, you keep seeing your sister right before she told you to leave her, the huge gash in her stomach. She's probably dead you think. You know these thoughts are not normal for someone your age but you've been through a lot. Losing your sister has been hard on you. You tune back in to what they're saying and realize you've been asked a question. "Wha--?" You stutter. The older kids laugh gently and you feel your big brown eyes fill with tears of humiliation. "Are you still in there, Claire, you have that look in your eyes again like you're a million miles away" one of the boys says gently. You nod automatically. "Yeah, I'm still here, just memories, sorry" You say, your round cheeks flushing with embaressment. "Good, I was just asking if you wanted to come play a game with us?" The boy says. You nod, needing an excuse to get away from the horrors of your memories.
You follow the others outside to the big field Miss Peregrine has behind her house and the kids start to pass around a ball. The poor thing is slightly deflated but is still usable. You think about joining them and run in. One of the older boys passes you the ball ad you try to kick it but your legs are so short, it doesn't go very far. You feel a flush color your face as you try again, this time, you send the ball to the person beside you. They smile encouragingly at you before passing the ball to someone else. Sun shines on your curly blonde hair and warms your head as you play with the other kids. Its a new experiance for you because in the lab, you weren't allowed to play games or have fun, all the time it was "Sit still" or "Do this" or "Stop that" Never were you allowed to play and definitely not kick around a ball. You would have broken something and then they would have gotten mad at you and beaten you or something awful.
You continue playing with the other kids before one of them calls for a game. "Come on Claire, you should join us" The older girl, Olive, says, smiling at you. You don't know if you should or not. You'd like to play a game but you're worried that you'll get hurt because you're so small. "Oh come on, it'll be fun" Olive is insistent. You sigh and nod, running after her onto the field. They've already split into teams and you join one of them at random.
As the game starts, you run to get the ball and soon discover that you're fast on your feet and this speed surprises a lot of people. You charge for the ball and take the oldest boy, you can't remember his name, by surprise. You steal the ball from him and dart towards the net. Suddenly, you're tackled and knocked to the ground. You hit the soft grass and roll over, trying to see who it was that tackled you. It's Olive. "Hey, that wasn't very nice" You say, seeing the glimmer of amusement in her eyes. "Come and get me then" Olive mocks you. You narrow your normally huge brown eyes and dart to her but she's as fast as you are and she's gone by the time you get to the spot she was just standing. You look around and see that now she's over on the other side of the field, the ball at her feet. You do the best thing you can think of and stick your tongue out at her.
"Dinner, children" Miss Peregrine calls from behind the house. You follow the others quietly back into the house, your energy spent. Now, you just want to lay down and take a nap. The dinner that Miss Peregrine has prepared is small but hearty. You can tell she's put a lot of love into it. Very soon, all the food is gone and your stomach is full. You feel content, much the same as you've felt since coming here.
---One year later---
During your time with Miss Peregrine, you've started to heal and learn that not everyone is as heartless as those people in the lab. You are still as quiet as a mouse, never really feeling the need to speak, but you're not as afraid of everyone as you used to be. Taken, you're still small, but you like it that way. You wake up on your bed, as you've been doing every morning for the past year, and look out the window. The oceans waves crash on the shore and the air smells of salt. I think this is as close to paradise as I'll ever get you think, sitting up. You slip on a pair of slippers, they fit your tiny feet perfectly, and slide out of bed. Your footsteps are soundless on the carpet as you pad down the stairs. Normally, you wouldn't dream of coming down these stairs because its always dangerous at this time, with the other kids running down the stairs for breakfast. This morning however, it's Sunday, the day when you all sleep in. You, however, have never been one to sleep in. Miss Peregrine is the only other person awake at this time. You can hear the click of knitting needles and wonder what she's making.
You pad into the living room of the rustic old mansion that you'd first arrived in a year ago, cold, wet, dirty, and scared, and find Miss P sitting in her rocking chair, knitting a sweater. She looks up as you enter the door and smiles. "You're up early, Claire, are you feeling alright?" She asks. You shake your head. In your seven year old mind, Miss Peregrine is like a mother. She's kind, gentle, sweet, and loving of all her children. "I'm just an early riser" you reply. She smiles. "Here, I want to show you something my dear" She says, standing up. Her bones creak as she walks over to the ancient bookshelf and she picks up a beautifully crafted book. She walks back to her rocker and invites you onto her lap. Opening the book, she shows you pictures. "This is me when I was your age," She says, pointing to a photo of a little girl with dark waves of hair. You look closely at the photo and smile. She looks so cute, just like you. "You look so cute, Miss Peregrine." You say, smiling. She smiles. "I was just like you when I was little. I was quiet, shy, and a big dreamer. I think that if you want something, my dear, you can do it. I always wanted to help the kids who didn't have anyone and look where I am today." She says, looking around the house. "I want to help other people, people who are like me, experemints" You say, feeling a flicker of sorrow in your mind. "I know you do" She says, setting you down. [/blockquote]
