Little girl alone on the playground
Tired of gettin' teased and gettin' pushed around
Wishin' she was invisible
To them
She ran home cryin'
"Why do they hate me?"
And Mama wiped the tears and said
"Baby, you're brave and you're beautiful."
So, hold your head high.
Don't ever let 'em define
The light in your eyes.
Love yourself, give them Hell.
You can take on this world.
You just stand and be strong
And then
FIGHT LIKE A GIRL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning of Day One-bring it on
Shayanne was ready.Ready for the Games,ready to take on her fellow competitors,ready to go back home.She silently wondered what the Capitol thought of her right now,the lonely little girl from the District of Hunters,the one that got a nice training score but no one really cared about anyways.It was one of those wonderful facts of life that the higher someone was,the harder they would fall.As Shayanne was not a Career,and not completely out of her mind,she would not fall hard.In a Career's eyes,a loss would be the complete end of the world.In Shayanne's eyes however,losing would be just a stroke of bad luck.Shayanne had lost so much in her life.Her father had commited suicide,and then not long ago her brother was killed.
Shayanne did not have to die in these games.She had already died a little when she lost the one and only thing that made her life worth living.
Her brother had been her rock,the only person that kept her sane.Her mother was hardly ever pleasant,and Shayanne could not even hardly say that she loved her.The woman's name was Sarah,and it seemed that her one goal in life was to sit around the house and be cared for.She was not mentally unstable(although Shayanne used that as an excuse for her laziness),she was not disabled or unhealthy in any way.She wasn't even that old.Sarah always had someone doing everything for her,and that's the way it always was when Shayanne was growing up.Normal childhood for Shayanne? Nah.She would always be out with her brother hunting,when she was able to start learning.Her brother made it enjoyable,he taught her everything.She had loved him more then anything,and then he was snatched away from her,right out of her fingertips.
It was not long ago that he left either.Shayanne liked to think that he had only gone on a hunting trip,and he would be back soon,just like any small child would believe.She knew it was a lie,and yet she told herself this that year that he was gone.He would be back,and when she came back from the Games,he would be so proud.His name was Bret,and he had always been laughing.If Shayanne got up in the morning with a bad hair day,he would make some stupid joke about it and she would always childishly laugh loud and hard.She loved him so much.
Shayanne was going to win these Games for him.But not only him.Not many weeks ago,she had encountered a boy in the woods.His name was Mark Kane.As Shayanne was sprinting away from the bloodbath,thoughts of her brother and thoughts of the day that she met Mark drove her to go faster.She could recall that day easily in her mind,and she used that as power as she sprinted full force into the dense foliage around her.She and Mark had been arguing over a deer.
"That deer was going to be mine.I've been following it for a while now,"she said,oblivious at the time that she was arguing with her future boyfriend.
"I got it first, so it's mine, I say, and if you want to fight about it you'll lose."Being the stubborn girl that she was,Shayanne completely denied that she would lose.
"How are you so sure?"Shayanne could remember her tone of voice.It was playful,joking,and yet she was deadly serious and demanded respect for her hidden talents.
"I'm sure I can win, because I could cut your arrow out of the air with my scythe, then behead you, but because you worked hard you can have it. If the whole world worked like that.We wouldn't have to fight over game."By the sound of his voice,he had been completely sure that he could kill her if he wanted to.Nonetheless,he had been a gentleman and given her the deer.Shayanne was stubborn though.Although he had given up the deer,she was sure that if they fought,she would win.She had not given up that argument.
"But what if I was fast?You don't know me.How long I've been hunting."Shayanne was fast.Her brother would laugh and tell her that she could race lightning and win,if she tried.
With that,they had begun a mock fight.He would not actually fight a girl,and she would not actually hurt him.Somehow,in some miracle moment,he had asked to walk her home.She was definitely done hunting for that day,with a large deer as her prize.She had agreed,and somehow on that walk home she had kissed him.Why she had done it,she still didn't know.
Happy moments like that were few and far between in Shayanne's life.In her Fifteen years,she had probably only been happy when she was around her brother,or those times that she had seen Mark.She craved more of those moments.Every tiny bit of happiness that she had ever felt made Shayanne run faster,think faster,and be light on her feet as she ran through that forest.Adrenaline was pumping through her veins at incredible speed,and all she could do right then was smile.This is me, people of the Capitol.This is me,my fellow tributes.I am going to win.
Shayanne was aware of everything around her,as she submerged herself in her thoughts again.
"Any useful tips?
''Well, I only said that because you know everything you need. I could say find a source of fresh water first, or stay away from the Cornucopia but you know that already. I just meant I want you to be safe."
Shayanne had her water.She had gotten a fair enough size jug of it at the Cornucopia.For this she was extremely thankful,because she had not seen any amount of water nearby.Only the cold snow,and of course there was the lake.Judging upon the temperature,it was probably frozen solid,so no hope there.She could not eat the snow,because she would become even colder.She could maybe melt it,but it was much to early in the Games to be doing that.If she lit a fire,three tributes would be on her like nobody's business,and although she could probably kill them easily with a bow and arrows,she only had one knife and she could not take the chance of losing it.Her knife was her source of food,and she would need it.She could last longer without food however.Water was the problem.When she ran out of that,she would need to find more.Thankfully,it was not warm whatsoever,and she was not sweating very much.If she started sweating,she would need more water.
Shayanne had gotten away from the Cornucopia.Growing up,she had never been the luckiest of people,and she half expected to be one of the people to die in the beginning,taken out by a competitor when she went for an item.Tributes could not always help it.No matter how hard they fought,how swift they ran,they could be killed at the hell-hole that was the Cornucopia.Careers would hunt you down,and even some of those who were not professionally trained would kill.The more tributes killed in their eyes,the better.If the Arena had not looked so daunting,Shayanne would have not even looked at the items and bolted away without question.However,because the Arena was amazingly cold and horrible,she would need something to survive.She had thankfully pulled out a knife and that jug of water.It would have been nice to get a blanket or a jacket or anything to keep her warm,but that was a luxury that she would give away,if the cost was her life.
As for her safety,Shayanne could not guarantee anything.A tribute could jump from a tree and kill her in five seconds.In the Arena,nothing was for certain.She could be dead tonight.Immediately,Shayanne shut that thought out of her mind and continued on through the forest,just getting as far away from that damned hell-hole as possible.Like a cat,she was silent.Growing up in the District of Hunters,it was impossible not to know how to be silent while running.She did not make any noise as she ran,flawlessly moving as she ran even farther into the forest.Every few minutes she came across an animal that was adapted to the snow,so that was a good sign.Food would not be a problem-she could throw a knife like a professional,heck.She was a professional.She could deal with the water for a while,as well.
Shayanne would win these Games.No doubts,no thoughts of dying.She was going to win for them.Not for herself.
