Anthem - Day 4

The sweltering heat of the past few days won’t let up, no matter how much you wish it would. As the clouds pull away and reveal the endless sky and its falling sun (taking some of the heat with it) you realize that the winds have died down. If the breeze was blissful and cool at all, that comfort is gone. The air is still as the sun sets, leaving the air muggy as ever – but quiet.

Too quiet.

Even worse is the fact that the heat seems to fade away. If the nights before were a reprieve, this night is even cooler. You wonder how this could be – how the Gamemakers could be so generous. Or are they simply making it easier for you to hear the dangers lurking all around? A growl here, a twig snapping there; silence is its own torture, for you know that something isn’t right.

When light fills the sky and the anthem begins to play – louder this time, it seems – you jump in surprise against your will. Above you, the faces of the dead are shown, gazing disapprovingly down on those who outlived them:

This has been the latest in a series of achingly long days, but you're not so tired as to forget your arithmetic; with nine down, there are twelve tributes remaining. If you plan to go home, eleven more must die.

As the anthem ends, the final portrait fades, once more leaving the sky lifeless.
