Ashes Davis
I'm wide awake,
yeah I was in the dark
I was fallin hard
with an open heart
I'm wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong
yeah I was in the dark
I was fallin hard
with an open heart
I'm wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong
The moon floated above my head as I stared up at it from my window. The clock read exactly 12:00 midnight. Make a wish, Ashes I thought. It was my birthday but I was spending it alone because both of my parents were away. I felt like crying. Shouldn't your seventeenth birthday be something special? A day you spend with your family? but no, I would be spending it alone because my parents were in the capitol. Why'd they have to take a trip now? I wondered bitterly. I felt silent tears fall down my cheeks as I curled myself into a ball on the window seat and cried. I missed my parents and I wanted them home for today.
After a little while, I stopped crying and looked at the clock again. It was already 2 o'clock in the morning. I wiped my eyes, blew my nose, and made my way silently downstairs. Flicking on the light, I found the gifts my parents had left for me exactly where they'd been two days ago when they'd gone away. I picked one of them up and shook it lightly. A soft rattle came from inside. Happy birthday Ashes I thought, tearing it open. Inside was a new set of paints and a few easles that I'd been begging my parents for. I smiled as I read the card attached to it.
Once I was finished opening all the presents they'd left for me, I wandered into the kitchen and found the birthday cake my step mom had made for me. I cut a small slice of it and tasted it gingerly. It was good. Soon, the piece was gone. I headed back upstairs and continued looking up at the moon. Suddenly, a shadow appeared near the house and looked up. I couldn't make out the face but I could have sworn it was a guys face. Who in all of panem, would be awake at this hour though? I flicked on my lamp and looked again at the clock. 3:30 am. In about three hours the sun would be up and I'd be greeted by my friends as they celebrated my birthday. Suddenly, a knock sounded on the door downstairs. I hurried down the steps and peared through the peep hole. A shadowed face looked back at me. They appeared weaponless and didn't look like much of a threat so I unlocked the door and cracked it open. "It's three thirty in the morning, can I help you?" I asked.
