The House of the Rising Sun
District 10 has always been an unforgiving place—hot and heavy heat, wild animals, and not enough to go around—it’s no wonder so many fade into dust so quickly. The Olentzero family was just another hash mark on the long list of those that had fallen. The mother (Mari) and father (Talo) had what they needed to survive—a dairy farm that provided some sustenance and a little in the ways of comfort. But just as the land gave, the family was torn apart by the natural order of things.
Mari fell ill not long after giving birth to her last child, Leita. She faded away quickly, white as a ghost, dying in her bed. This left Talo with four children to care for—a task not easy for a man also in charge of running a large farm. He gave it his best shot—making sure that all his children were fed, that upkeep on the farm was done, and that all was kept in order. For an older man with a bad heart, there wasn’t too much he could’ve done to prevent his death. Just nine years after losing his wife, Talo too shuffled off his mortal coil and to the land beyond.
They mourned for a few months with the farm falling into disrepair. They could have gone to the children’s home, if it weren’t for the fact that Zorion was already considered an adult (despite his condition). Cachimorro then stepped up to the plate, with the mission that his family would weather this storm and turn out all right. He has come out of mourning and demanded the rest do the same—meaning that he is now in charge of the farm, of them, and of the plan for the future. While still a child himself, he has every intention to be treated as an adult, and to see to it that all is well.
Zorion Olentzero [19] (open)—He has always been the “special one.” When he was three years old, he caught a terrible case of the mumps. Without proper medical care, Zorion’s brain swelled. While he survived the illness, it left him brain damaged and with less than satisfactory cognitive abilities. While he can do most tasks, he needs considerable help understanding things. His brother Cachimorro is incredibly protective of him, and treats him the same way he treats Leita—as a child that can do very few things on his own—which at times pleases and angers Zorion. He can do much on his own, but he is very gullible and trusting. His childlike demeanor makes him a target for those looking to do ill, and a case of sympathy for those that see him as “unfortunate.”
Cachimorro Olentzero [17] (Zorionak) [Roleplay Sample]—He is the De Facto leader of the family. Always seen as having an old soul, Cachimorro has taken over duties of running the farm and looking after his brothers and sisters. His mission in life is to see his brother and sisters through the difficult times, and to make sure that his two younger sisters grow up well. He will always be looking after Zorion, and as such has taken to treating him like a child. He is fiercely protective and at times, overbearing when it comes to how he wants things done. Any request is supposed to go through Cachi—who usually says no—and as such has become something of a tyrant at home. He is especially rough on the girls when they want to do things off of the farm, thinking only of the dangers that could occur. He is also steadfast in believing they should not grieve the deaths of their parents.
Tolosa Olentzero [12] (open)—She serves as the ‘womanly’ influence in the house. Tolosa likes girly things, and she likes to take over the void that has been left by their mother. While she is still growing and learning, she tries to act more adult than she really is. She is most happy when everyone else is happy, and is often doing little things for the rest of the members of the family. She will pick flowers for Leita, or make Zorion’s favorite meal. She makes tea for Cachi when he is feeling ill, and even pitches in to do the wash. She can have a temper which is not aided by her outspokenness, but overall she is not brave enough to stand up to Cachi when he makes a decision she believes is unfair.
Leita Olentzero [9] (open)—She is the dreamer of the family. She likes to spend as much time outdoors and away from everyone as she possibly can—if only because she thinks that what Cachi says is extremely unfair. She misses her father deeply, and is prone to bouts of sadness. The only one that appears to make her happy is Zorion, and she spends a lot of time with him watching him do chores. She does not want to learn to be a lady like Tolosa, and often reluctantly listens to Cachi when she is told to finish up her chores. She plans one day to run away, maybe out to the wilderness. Perhaps when she can build up the courage to get away from them all.
