Gabriella looked quietly at the ground, her eyes stinging with the tears that had obviously just dried. Her waist-length black hair fell in ringlets past her shoulders, bouncing on the ground with springy happiness. Frowning slightly, Gabriella brushed a tear away that threatened to spill down her already stiff, stained cheeks. A shaky sigh escaped her chest, rattling out of her throat and coming out as a croak.
Lips quenched with thirst, Gabriella rose unsteadily to her feet, lurching as her mind went all whoozy and dizzy. Clinging to the brick wall she sat by, Gabriella sighed again, the same croak from before. Life was hard, even when a favorite pet just died. A tiny mew broke her grieving silence, and a pair of wary yellow eyes burned from within the bottom of a gutter.
It was a small kitten, no doubtedly cold and hungry in this wintry weather. Coat draped around Gabby's delicate frame, the curly-haired teenager unwound her long scarf, and attempted to tempt the little kitten out with kisses and soft noises. " Heeeere kitty kitty kittyyy.. Heeeeeere kitty kitty kittyyyy... " Gabby quietly said, her expression now soft and still tear stained.
The kitten perked its' ears for a moment, as if to trust her, but it backed further back into the metal gutter. Gabby sighed in exasperation, but had an inspiration to lure the little kitten out. Reaching into her lunch sack, Gabby pulled out a piece of meat and dangled it in front of the gutter. " C'meeeere kitty kitty kittyyyy.. " she soothed, and watched in delight as the kitten darted forward like a little mouse and snatched up the piece of chicken.
Automatically, Gabby wrapped her warm scarf quickly around the kitten and cuddled it close. The kitten squirmed, trying to get out of the girl's arms. Gabby then noticed it was a dirty brown tom kitten. What was this little thing doing out here so far from his mother. Cradling the little thing like a baby, Gabby began to step forward, but a voice stopped her.
