The four leafed clover is an uncommon variation of the three-leafed clover, and apparently it was supposed to bring good fortune to those who discovered it. The most ever recorded on one was 56, a number never again reached even ten leaves away. Maggie had no intention of finding such a thing, but as her hands ran over the clovers, brushing against each little leaf people described as green, hoping to feel the fourth leaf. The patch was near the forest, a place she tried not to get near, but it was so easy just to sit and relax near the place. It was almost like soft bedding. The word green meant nothing to her sightless eyes. Everything seemed to be green, according to the district's people. Color meant nothing, not her, anyways.
One of the younger girls in her house had found a four-leafed clover, and bragged about it for days, though she had never let Maggie hold it. It was too precious for clumsy, vegetable-brained her. The faint sound of running children, laughing and playing as they chased each other nearby, brings thoughts of the children in her house that ran, not bumping into anything or tripping on invisible ropes. They were too young for the Reaping.
Her hand rubs around another clover, counting each little leaf. There were only two on this one, which had to be the opposite of good luck. Of course, luck tried to avoid her most of the time. Most of these plants had three leaves, some two. The one she just rubbed her hand over had one. She may never stumble upon the four leaf clover resembling the one held by her housemate. She gets the sensation she is repeating, and moves a few feet away to a different spot in the patch. With her luck she was sitting on one of the lucky ones. Slowly, carefully, she finds a starting point and begins rubbing the plants again. She adjusts Ted, her comfort bear, and begins to mumble to him about luck.
"One leaf... two leaves... three leaves..." her hand runs over another leaf and she stops cold. Gripping Ted with one hand, she counts, "four leaves." Plucking up the plant, she takes it in both her hands, feeling two of the leaves in each hand. But there was something else, very gently pressing onto her magnified sense of touch. "Five leaves?" She hops up from the patch, and puts Ted under her arm. She checks the clover over and over, remembering from the older boy she'd run into that more than four could happen, a mutation, of nature. Rarer than rare, but luckier than lucky. A grin forms on her face as she checks it again, the soft, slightly fuzzy leaves so carefully.
She tries to imagine green again, only able to imagine the sensation of the clover. When the girls saw this, they were going to love her! They might even become her friends! Wait... that could be dangerous. Most were her enemies, and would try to steal her precious five-leaf clover. Immediately her shoulders hunch over as she guards her find. No one would take this from her. Turning, she begins to walk carefully but briskly in the direction of home, intending to stick it in her window. Only a few feet away, she is blocked by a hand, protecting themself from running into her. It surprises her from her thoughts, and her hands momentarily let go of the clover. Grappling in the air, she calls out, irritated. "M-my clover!"
