My stomach growls violently as I approach a tree near the fence, my ability to last without food was waning on me. The cold of the season wasn't helping either since all I had was an oversized top and ripped jeans, my pace begins to slow as black starts to work its way around the edge of my vision however I quickly shake it off, I couldn't surrender to hunger yet, not now. After I finally reach the tree I sit at it's base and rest my head against it, my arms over my stomach and my bag squashed between me and the tree, my sight focused on the collection of houses on the other side of the field. I let out a small yawn and look to the ground, this winter had been harsh, food was lower than normal and mum was getting worse, the "Nightbirds are survivors" thing began to be a lie to me, I didn't feel too good, Mum was really ill, granddad died, I haven't heard from my cousin then again mail from one district to another probably was hard. Yeah, and aside from Eileen, dad, Caitlynn and her dad. There where no Nightbirds left who where okay.
I shake my thoughts aside, and try to focus on not falling asleep, I knew I couldn't sleep, from experience with granddad I might not wake up. Why did I even come out here anyway? Sure it was quiet but I probably needed my family right now, and it was freezing. My blonde hair blows lightly to the right as an ice wind blows, causing me to shiver. What was I going to do, I needed food really, but where? The crops where suffering and even then most of the surviving ones would go to the Capitol, and the peacekeepers wouldn't help. GAH! I needed to stand up and get to searching. I really did.
I slowly begin to push my hands against the frozen mud and still slowly get myself to stand up, eventually fighting through cramp and stiffness I grab a low laying branch and force my self to stand, blinding pain ripping through my body as I do and I almost fall back down, both hands quickly gripping the tree branch and I quickly re-balance myself. How I was so quiet doing this was a mystery, then again I didn't want to attract anyone's attention, I am not in a worse state than anyone at the moment.
