I had always loved the farmers' market--the gleeful squeals of the children who played while their parents browsed; the smells of the farmers' homemade goods; the fruits and vegetables that mixed in an eye-catching cacophony of colors as I rode past. Even when I had no reason or intention to buy any of these things, I would ride here on horseback just to walk around, letting the hum of the crowd consume all thoughts that had nothing to do with the market. This place had been almost a second home to me ever since I was a kid. When I was little, my mother used to bring me along while she stocked up on some of the things we didn't grow or make at home. She'd always told me to stay close, but I'd never been one to obey--I had once been one of the children that were now running between the tables and stands, dodging the shopping pedestrians as best as they could.
Shadowfax's hooves thudded quietly against the dusty ground as I rode him in a slow walk among the tables of fruit. Swinging out of the saddle, I tied him to a tree so I could look around. The first table that caught my eye was a stand laden with baskets of apples and oranges. I wasn't sure what these kind were called--they were red with yellow splotches--but Dad always bought them when we had extra money. I picked one out of a basket and turned it around in my hand, examining it even though I didn't really know how to properly critique an apple. It seemed alright, so I bought a basket of them, handing the seller a fistful of loose change I'd been saving up.
Although I didn't have much money left, I continued to stroll along the line of tables. And then I saw him--or at least the back of his head. I would know that dark hair anywhere--Ethan, my ex-boyfriend. I'd regrettably tangled my fingers in it more times than I care to remember. Why on earth he'd cheated on me with... with she-who-shall not be named, I have no idea. On an impulse, I reached into the basket of apples and weighed one in my hand. My fingers curled around the apple's splotchy skin as I wound up my arm and threw it, as hard as I could, at Ethan's head. It connected with a thud, and he spun around...
Shit.
It's not him, it's not him, ripred it's not him. All of my blood flooded to my cheeks. I turned around, desperately wanting to run away, but it was no use. I knew he'd seen me. Besides, the embarrassment had frozen my feet to the ground. All I could do was stand there--staring in shock like a deer in the headlights--and wait for the poor guy's response, hoping it wasn't a bad one.text
