[/blockquote]"Nairne, couldya watch the sheep for me, I'm goin' to the grocer," Mary says, grabbing her shawl and sack. They were running out of food again, but Mary had gone ahead to sell the last of the wool from the previous spring so they could afford food until the next sheering. It was not much, but if rationed correctly would last them. Over the years the Sheppard family had bred the sheep carefully, and after each spring they always had a little left over to support themselves. A few springs ago, when they lost many in the winter, luck had been scarce, and last spring had not shown much either. "May I borrow your jacket?" Mary asks as an after thought. The snow was too cold to go out in her normal clothes.
"If I be watchin' the sheep I'll need it, use Anice's scarf of somefin," Nairne replies. Mary sighs, not in the mood to fight with her stronger, more stubborn sister. The only thing in common between Mary and her two older sisters was the curly honey hair, the golden eyes, and the flexibility of a cat. Grabbing the thin white scarf off the back of a chair she wraps it around her neck and walks out the door, the winter hitting her like a thousand little icecubes. She pulls her shawl tighter, recalling the distribution of garments by her father. Ne threw them on the couch to be tackled. Nairne, the muscle head, got the jacket by pure force. Anice got the shawl by speed. Mary? She just took what was left. Anice traded with her.
Walking with her head against the wind, Mary hums to her song. Her life was hard but she was happy to be living it. Her friends, the ewes and the grown sheep, kept her company. She was free of guilt. All because of the song her mother taught her she knew what to do. As long as she was helpful and good she would always survive, even through life's hardships. If only she could teach this to Nairne, and a few of the town sadies. Some people had simply no idea how to feel joyful.
Reaching the grocer, she opens the door and walks inside. Approaching the section with assorted beans, she slides down into a split to examine the lower shelves. She enjoyed using her flexibility, but only because the store was mostly empty. Her nature was to avoid people.
