"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all."
WARNING: For those of you who haven't seen the movie, this plot contains LOTS OF JUICY SPOILERS. You have been warned!
[/blockquote][/blockquote]On afternoons in District One, after lessons are over and the students have dispersed back to their homes and duties, five misfits, who under any other circumstances would certainly not be seen together, crouch under trees or huddle round the same cigarette lighter, cut off from the world. In the schoolyard, though they may pass each other, they share little more than a nod – just as one of them once said it would be – and stayed exclusively with their easily stereotyped cliques.
However, the five kids – a jock, a rebel, a geek, a queen bee and a rebel – were all bonded in ways they could not have imagined, when each spent a Saturday in the others' company in the Detention Center, under the not-so-watchful eye of Peacekeeper Wolfgang Hails. Through a series of fights, conversations and group confessions, the odd quintet became close friends, if not for any other reason than that they didn't fully trust the other four with the secrets they had shared.
"We accept the fact we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in Detention for whatever it is that we did wrong."
Hello and welcome to Onyx's third plot! First off, those of you who haven't seen this film – go and watch it, because it's incredible beyond belief, by present standards as well as crappy 80's movie standards, too. The events of this plot take place about a month after the so called "Breakfast" (and lunch and early dinner) that gave the club their name. The five meet almost every afternoon together, or in twos or threes, away from the judgemental eyes of their friends and teachers.
"You see us as you want to see us: in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions."
The Characters
The Brain :: Seventeen :: Male :: Cass
"I'm in the Math Club. The Physics Club, too," he pipes up, always desperate to impress. The Brain got into the Detention Center by mistake, when he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and was used as a scapegoat for the actual offender. However, he's used to being mistreated by the more 'popular' kids, convinced that they just don't understand him. And, as usual, he's right – with an extraordinarily high grade record, even one bad report could destroy his relationship with his edgy father forever. The Brain is notorious for his fragile confidence, which is broken constantly when he makes a mistake, and his extreme ways of dealing with problems. While he is an honest friend, in his social circle and the Club, he is quite changeable, reluctant to share his secrets, and easily provoked by The Athlete and The Criminal, who he sees as the biggest competition to make a name for himself, and prove himself to his peers and parents.
The Athlete :: Male :: Seventeen :: Shine
However, if The Brain's parent problems seem bad, The Athlete's are even worse. Both his father and mother, champions in their respective sports, don't care what he wants, only that he wins. To them, he's just a racehorse that can talk – only good for one thing: winning. And The Athlete is terrified that, if the day should ever come where he stops being able to win, he'll be sent to the glue factory just like an old racehorse. Being sent to the Detention Center for a very real crime made The Athlete extremely anxious that his parents would simply disregard him for a loser, withdrawing all their hope from him. Having quickly opened up to the others, he trusts them almost completely, even though he is sometimes provoked by The Princess and the bitter truths she provides the group with, proving points that they'd rather not believe were true. The Athlete is romantically attached to The Basket-Case in a temperamental, ever-changing relationship.
The Basket-Case :: Female :: Seventeen :: Danny[/blockquote]
[/blockquote][/blockquote]When the kids were all thrown into the discipline cell together, it was a few hours before The Basket-Case did anything except laugh and make incomprehensible noises. She gets glee from confusing and intimidating people using, frankly, her weirdness. Her favourite colour is black, and her hair hangs messy around her face, forming a barrier to other people which says "leave me alone" loud and clear which, before she met the other members of the Breakfast Club, was rarely broken. In a way, she and The Criminal are alike, both rebelling against conforming society in their own ways. However, where they differ is that The Criminal is unafraid to speak her mind, whilst The Basket-Case is an extreme, compulsive liar. With divorced parents, and a heavily alcoholic older brother, lying to get what she wants from a stressed out parent or a drunk sibling has been her way of life for a long time, and has evolved form an easy routine to her norm. On confessing this to the Club, she was afraid that she would lose their trust. As a result, she has a habit of taking things from their bags or listening in to their conversations at school (with no friends of her own) as a form of "insurance", should they decide that she is too unpredictable.
The Princess :: Female :: Seventeen :: Nofo[/blockquote]
[/blockquote][/blockquote]In a District such as One, there will always be families who have it all, and The Princess is lucky enough to belong to one. She's one of the most popular girls at school, always surrounded by a posse of friends, fellow gossipers. However, when she was sent to the Detention Center for a petty crime, she realised that a gaggle of friends and a stable family wasn't making her happy, at all. Suddenly stripped emotionally in front of kids who were otherwise invisible to her at school, she realised just how insecure she really was. Afraid to love herself and embarrassed about sharing her secrets, she finds that it's The Criminal who's helping her to build her confidence. The Princess is bitterly honest when it comes to other people, able to read people easily, if sometimes bluntly and shallowly, but knows she has to work on telling other people what she, herself, is like, rather than defensively describing only what she can see in other people.
The Criminal :: Female :: Seventeen :: Onyx[/blockquote]
Always holding herself above other people, even though she ought to be so far below them, The Criminal strains to rise above her poor upbringing and history of begging on the streets, dirty and ignored, by making herself infamous in the District. She's been in the Detention Center more times than her and Peacekeeper Hails, her personal nemesis, have digits for, and that Saturday was no more than part of a routine for her. Even so, being known for her impressive and extreme criminal history isn't the only reason she spends so much time under Disciplinary Isolation. Her father has no qualms with beating his children, and The Criminal has grown afraid and wary of being at home, as her mother never acts in her defence, either. Often brash, but also easily insulted, The Criminal acts almost as a leader of the Breakfast Club, the one that first brought them together. Although she passes it off as no more than flirting, The Criminal's tender, vulnerable heart is brought out in her feelings for The Princess. Constantly showing her how fun breaking the rules can be, and helping her create confidence in herself, The Criminal's protectiveness for The Princess is laced with deeper feelings, which she doesn't dare admit to any of her friends.
The Authority :: Male :: Adult :: Open[/blockquote]
[/blockquote][/blockquote]With a personal vendetta against The Criminal, and a hate for all meddling youths in general, Wolfgang Hails originally became a Peacekeeper simply to relieve himself of the pressures of ever having to have children himself. Now having risen to a fairly high rank in District One, with licence to convict and prosecute whoever he deems guilty. And boy, does he exploit this power. Never stopping to look closely at a situation, Hails has a dire issue of assuming what's easiest; judging a book by its cover. A shallow man who uses his authority unprofessionally, for his own benefit and to make people afraid of him, Wolfgang is the meanest of the lot. However, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed and, if something seems to have more cons on his part than pros, he will abandon it and do instead what suits him. Peacekeeper Hails may be a strong believer in good-ol' fashioned punishment, and a forwards supporter of the Hunger Games (that should make the damn kids see how uncouth they are, a little discipline), but his blunt scope and narrow horizons often stop him seeing the roots of the problems at hand.
"Does that answer your question?"
