The Rainswallows

A wind rose in the night,
(She had always feared it so!)
Sorrow plucked at my heart
And I could not help but go.

In District eight, there lives a family with odd beliefs. When a child is born, the direction which they had been birth towards affects their life. As well, it also dictates their name and their path in life. As well, a child's first gift has a great deal of influence on everything the child does. Mrs. Rainswallow was born facing south, and was named Sarah as dictated by the superstition. Mr. Rainswallow was not raised with the same superstition, but his wife found his birth direction, for all she knew it was too late to fully incorporate everything from it into his life. Born facing to the west, Gage Rainswallow is the father and man of the family. A mapmaker, he draws all of his maps by hand, and has gotten into the practice of creating wind roses for each of his children when they are born.

Sarah Rainswallow wishes to have a child for each of the points of the compass, North, West, South and East. Like she was, she names them for the direction they were born in and wishes them to follow their destinies, but only as long as they wouldn't be hurt.

Softly I went and stood
By her door at the end of the hall.
Dazed with grief I watched
The candles flaring and tall.

As a young boy, he had always entertained a small idea of travelling into far lands in search of myths and knowledge, but now that has all but faded from him. Instead, he draws up maps, putting all of the details that he had been given about each place into them. Each one done by hand, no two look exactly the same but he never adds mystical beasts or unknown details to any place as he was trained not to. Every map done by him is truthful, and will guide whoever purchases it well. He married Sarah after she heard of his wonderful Wind Rose designs and came to see them. She told him about her families beliefs that a person's birth direction determined a person's life and path. Eventually, he found he was West-born, and Sarah told him of her plan to have a child for each point of the compass. Together they created a family.

She is highly superstitious, believing many old wives tales and always trying to make the good ones come true, while banishing the bad to some place other than her house. Do not take her for being gullible, however, because she is anything but. Her children have a hard time lying to her without getting caught, and only Slayde has so far managed to fool her. Eira never lies to her mother, but her non-truths are perhaps the only things that Sarah doesn't seem to catch onto.

Noland Rainswallow

Nothing anyone can say would bury the desire to explore within his heart. He has gotten into trouble many times for trying to go somewhere he shouldn't, but no punishment has ever been enough to quell the fire in him. Even still, he is responsible about his siblings and doesn't let them join him, not that either of the twins has much of an appreciation for exploration. He understands that he is supposed to be the secondary caregiver of the family, but once he turns nineteen there will be no stopping him on his adventures and he will have left them in search of knowledge and excitement. He helps his father with his maps, detailing places that he had been so his father could trace accurate impressions of them onto the maps. He is especially fond of Zanna, for he can see the spark of adventure that lingers in her although he tries to keep her safe with as much effort as his parents.

Wesly "Wes" Rainswallow

The older of the twins, Wesly certainly acts it. In fact, he is one of the more mature siblings out of all of them. While he's not anything like Noland and his explorations, Wes does enjoy going out of the house for long stretches of time. During this time, he goes around the District to view the different plants that grow around the area. He loves learning about them, and the animals that used to live there too. In fact, he just likes to learn. He is much more into book knowledge than the first-hand experiences that Noland so often goes for. Both he and Slayde do their best to avoid anything more adventurous than taking a walk, which suits their parents just fine.

Slayde Rainswallow

He may be Wesly's twin, but Slayde is not identical in mindset to Wes. For one thing, he spends most of his time in his room with some sort of art utensil in hand. His art is pretty good, and he is always trying to better himself. He has created a little book with Wesly, drawing in plants while Wesly writes details about them. They have also created a bird book along the same principle. Both books are constantly being added to, as each boy finds another plant or bird that they don't have an entry for. Secretly, Slayde has created a group of drawings of mutts that had been seen in the Games. He tells no one of this, but just finds that he enjoys recreating scenes with them in the Games. Once, he even sketched a moment from a past Games, and that started him wondering whether he should draw more.

Eira Zanna Rainswallow

Eira, or more commonly referred to as Zanna, is not what her mother had expected her to be. Normally East-born children are more similar to maids and the old fashion ladies, taking up sewing, spinning and the like as well as being a help around the house at large. However, Zanna is much more like her eldest brother Noland, looking for exciting new things to do. Surely she was East-born, as dictated by her natural talent with a needle and the triple checking of the compass before her birth, but she doesn't act nearly like-enough to those East-born Sarah had encountered before. How odd.

The candles flickered and leapt,

As well, I am open with changing names, as long as they begin with the first letter of their birth direction (s for south, n for north and so on).

First Choice: Slayde ~~slkbjolkfi I love him and Noland just the same don't make me chooossseee D':~~

Ideas for Character: So Slayde loves loves loves to draw, paint, sketch, etc. He'll take any piece of paper and just doodle, and during school all of his notes and tests usually have doodles of mutts or crazy animal designs running up and down the margins. Sometimes he'll slip into his dad's map making office and draw those mythical creatures on the map that his dad never does. When he does draw on the maps he's sure to go all the way - drawing the creature and then painting/coloring it in, then escaping before his dad finds him in the shop (though it's quite obvious who drew the creatures).

Slayde isn't really a boy of many words. He prefers to express himself through drawing, and when he's around unknown people he's extremely shy and will duck/hide behind his twin. The only person he really talks to is Wes; when he's with Wes, he just comes all the way out of his shell and is as vibrant as ever, but stick him in a crowd of people without Wes and he'll suddenly become almost like a mute.

He secretly has an interest in the exploration that Noland is always talking about, wondering what's beyond the district's fence though if ever given the chance to explore he'd be quite nervous about it and probably refuse. All it'd take would be a little convincing from Wes and he'd just about to anything. He also takes a keen interest in the mutts of the games and during the games he can be found sitting right in front of the TV with a piece of paper and a pencil, sketching out scenes and mutts as fast as he can before they fade from memory and/or a new, draw-able scene comes up.

Second Choice: Noland

Ideas for Character: he reminds me of the movie UP <333 anyway, he wants to explore EVERYWHERE IN THE WOORRLLLDDDDD~ like really, "What's beyond the edges of the map? Well why don't we just go find out~" he's more than ready to just up and dust, packing the bare minimum and mapping tools and go off into the great unknown. "The final frontier!" He wants to go down in history as a discoverer of unknown lands.

He studies each of the maps his dad and him make, committing to memory each of the landmarks and boundaries. Need directions? Noland's your man. He can tell you where everything is and the shortest route to your destination.

Noland's quite fond of his sister and he intends to kindle that little spark of exploration in her so that hopefully he can someday have an "exploration buddy." He's got quite a fiery personality and he won't hesitate to clamber up and over the district fence on a whim. He's a spur-of-the-moment kind of guy and doesn't ever really plan ahead - whatever he feels like doing right then and there is what he'll do. He doesn't think too much of the consequences anyway. Noland loves his family but his soul is just consumed with wanderlust and staying in one place for too long drives him nuts.

FC Suggestion: None atm but I do have some in mind ~~if they look young enough~~ xD

First Choice: Wesly Rainswallow
Ideas for Character: So first off I am not the best at these XD.

Wes I see is kind of that boy who always is leading in a strict and safer way unlike Noland. I see him always dealing with situations with a logical sense instead of a spur of the moment sense. Slayde and Wes would be almost inseparable from eachother, except when something goes wrong. Wes is always fixing situations Noland is causing or trying to fix first. Wes also has a thirst for Knowledge, so he drowns himself in books beyond books of knowledge when he is at home. He also likes to go outside and explore, but not like Noland would. Wes would rather study the plants and animals that he can find and record notes of them and their behavior than go out beyond what they are supposed to. Wes would rather look in the area than break the law like Noland. Wes would have that temptation though to go outside sometimes when he wants to learn more than in the area, but he never goes. Wes is much more outdoorsy than Slayde. Wes would have a notebook and pencil always at hand just in case. Wes and Slayde are more likely to work together than alone though making them a powerful team against Noland and Noland's opinions in matters. But Noland and Wes would have a pretty close relationship too being the mature ones in the family, no one really understands them, so when Wes has a problem that he can't solve by logic, he goes to Noland for help.

Second Choice: Noland Rainswallow
Ideas for Character:

Noland I feel would be the "Bad boy" of the Rainswallows, but not really. He would be bad to a point. Noland would study maps with his father having more experience with adults than teens. Noland would know anything and everything on a map. He would be the one that knows everywhere in town and every landmark. Noland would also have a huge taste for adventure and always go over the fence. He would explore as much as he can and still know his way back somehow. He would get punished severely, but always end up back over the darn fence. He would always try to deal with a situation, but his god awful brother would come in and fix it first. That pisses off Noland always, but when Wes couldn't use logic to fix it, he would go to Noland for the help and Noland would help always. Noland has a heart for everyone and would help anyone in a heartbeat. He trusts too easily though which eventually gets him backstabbed in the end. He is very fond of Zanna even if she is the youngest. He is always trying to spark that adventure in her, but he hasn't succeed yet. He would never let her go on his adventures though, those are too dangerous. Noland is the Danger seeker, that has a heart.

FC Suggestion: SO I have Jean Bilodeau reserved and I feel he would be a good FC for either of these Charries XD So here is a link his pic XD Jean Bilodeau
