if i'm stuck out here alone
if i'm stranded here all year

Things changed drastically in the night. I probably shoulda seen it comin', based on what I dreamed over the course of my fitful sleep all curled in the vines of the wild, overgrown garden: my subconscious had presented me with a few lovely images of my brother and I, perishin' in the very flames we called our closest friends. I could feel the fire lickin' around my body, my flesh, only for once it didn't feel like it belonged; it scalded my skin and left searin', painful burns, the likes of which even a fire-rat like me had never felt before. I screamed, screamed Py's name, but even if he could hear me he wouldn't've been able to help; he was burnin' in just the same way, and there was no one else to help us. Both Keeni twins would fall to their own flames, meet their untimely deaths, fade into nothin' but smoke and ashes. Forever.
When I woke, I was alone. Hell, I coulda been alone when I went to sleep, too; honestly at this point I had no freakin' idea. All I know is that I had been with Pyrian, right after he killed Asunder, but our minds had both been in such turmoil that it was possible we'd just stumbled away from one another without realizin' and never found our way back. Part of me yearned for the familiar company of my brother, of the predictability of us together, but I knew at this point it was probably for the better; there were only six of us left in here. Six. As in, I was a hand away from goin' home with the crown. If Pyrian was out of the way, it would be a hell of a lot easier to do that. Only this means you won't be able to protect him anymore. Yeah, but I couldn't protect him forever. If Py was gonna stand a chance in the rest of this competition, he hadda be able to handle himself. But what if it comes down to the two of you? Then… well, I didn't know. I really just didn't know.
That mornin' just… felt different. Like there was a feelin' on the air, a feelin' of death, like all this would be over sooner than any of us could realize. I gathered up my stuff and shoved it all in my backpack with my head on a swivel and my rapier ready in my belt, just in case someone decided to take advantage of me when I was preoccupied and slash a knife through my back. Once I was all packed up I took off to the northwest, havin' virtually no destination in mind. It was eerie bein' alone; I'd been with at least two of my boys at all times since the very beginning of the Games. Now Asunder was dead, Pyrian was missin', and Owen… well, I neither knew nor cared about Owen Rook any longer. We'd never gotten particularly close from the get-go, and when he'd thrown snakes at my brother that was the absolute final straw. If I never had to see Owen again before one of us died, well that would be just fine with me.
I dunno what possessed me to go back through the snake pit, but when I stumbled upon it after a bit of walking I figured what the hell, might as well cross. Maybe I could lurk around the Cornucopia and just be the last one left when the Games ended, right? Easiest victory ever. Yeah fucking right they'd let you stay there untouched. These are the Gamemakers we're talkin' about. Turns out I'd hit trouble even quicker than I'd expected, because no sooner had I crossed the pit than I ran into my former ally, Pyrian's assailant. Owen. "If there weren't six of us left, I'd leave you be," I growled at him, crossing my arms but letting my fingertips brush my rapier in a clear warning move. "But that bein' said, this thing is almost over. And yesterday, you tried to kill my brother." My mind supplemented my words with images of Owen, an expression of ruthlessness on his face, slashin' his sword at Py. Throwin' poisonous snakes at him. "So what the hell, right?" I let my expression fall into a feral grin and quick as a flash, pulled my final jar of tar out of my bag, along with my throwin' knives, because if I wanted to kill I needed to have my greatest ally on my side.
