Why, you’re early, Miss.
Yes, I am. About that...
If you would please get on with what you’re about to say, I have a full schedule ahead with the patients.
Well, it’s been hard lately. My father’s hours has been cut back in the laboratory, and my mother can’t find any job to support—
Miss, if I may ask, how long have you been working here?
Quite a while, now, sir. Six years, maybe.
Has anything changed around the hospital?
...
Miss?
Nothing, sir. It’s all the same. The same walls that needs repainting —
Six years and we’ve had yet to repaint, how about that? We would, but we can’t. I would give you a raise, but I can’t.
...
Are you okay, Miss?
Yes, yes. I’m fine, doctor.
Now would you please take the folder of — who — what was her name?
...It’s been the same children, sir —
I would hardly call them children —
And we just, uh, lost Katie a month back —
Katie... what did she look like again?
Brown, short hair, sir. Quite feisty, used to be snappish...
Everything alright, Miss?
She used to be so... lively, until the tests —
Ah, yes. Katie.
...
You’ve got something on your mind, Miss?
...What happened to her, doctor?
Oh, uh — she had a disease. We... tried to cure her but, uh, you know the medicine here in Six isn’t as effective as the Capitol’s and...
Oh. She was a lovely girl...
...Yes, she was. And we’ve had a couple tests seen, and uh, unfortunately we’ve seen the same case in a couple of them.
Do you mean those —
Yes, them.
It’s strange to see them still here, sir, after all those years.
Well, we are still their responsible guardians. There’s no one for them, except the Home.
But those poor things... Been orphans ever since?
I’m afraid so. But — we’re trying to make things... better for them.
Oh, that’s wonderful news, considering they’re almost of legal age. That guy — Adan, he looks like he’s ready for the outside —
Ah, Adan. We’ve got tests arranged for him, soon. Do you mind giving me his folder?
Sure, doctor. Here it is... oh and here’s the one you’ve asked me for. Eris? Do you mind if I look at it for a while, sir?_______________________________THE HOME

When did you first see the symptoms of her tuberculosis, ma’am?
Well, a little over a month after she was dumped in our doorstep by her stupid mother she started coughing. We thought it was only the usual flu, but then it got fucking noisy during the night. We can’t fucking sleep — she’s wheezing all the time.
Only now have you decided to admit her in the hospital?
Don’t you accuse me of anything, it was already enough we had four kids and now we have a coughing girl that’s not even our own. She’s another mouth to feed when we’re already stretching whatever little money we have. Damn kid didn’t even tell us she’s been choking up blood until we saw little red splatters on her pillow. Had to wash that, too, what I did.
What is your relation to the patient, ma’am?
I’m her aunt, up until I had to be her mother too when my dumbass of a sister got too weak for life and her husband too. I knew the minute they were married nothing good could happen, now they’ve made a child only to plop in my hands.
Are you sure you want to leave her with us, ma’am?
Now I don’t know why you keep adding ‘ma’am’ to your questions but I sure am sure. She’s far too much cost for us to keep and I wouldn’t know how to take care of her anyway.

What’s your name, child?
I’m Eris.
That’s all?
Eris Wright. Eris Illiana Wright.
Well that’s quite long. Mother gave it to you?
My father did.
What happened, Eris?
I started coughing. I thought it was just like any other until it started to sound like my mother’s. The next thing I knew there’s blood –
I meant with you – your family. Will you be alright with that? [...] So what happened?
I don’t know. We used to be happy. My mother would cook for us and Gage and Jack and I would go to school while my father would go to work. Everything was normal until my father started coming home early, then he started to smoke. Mother would tell him to stop or at least smoke outside, but he never seemed to listen. Then she grew ill and Father rarely stood up from his seat, always smoking, never caring, and I had to take care of my brothers with what was left in the house. My mother called for Au— Carol and told her to take my brothers and I, I was by the doorway and I heard it all. Carol could only take me and not my brothers, and that they’d have to go somewhere else because she’s already rough on money on her own. The next day I found Mother staring at the ceiling. By that time she was dead. Father, too, but only a day later when my brothers were gone to homes I’d never know and I was with Carol, I passed by my old home to see him sleeping, still in his chair, a cigarette still burning and between his fingers.
Hold on. The house that burned down a year ago, that was yours?
I don’t know. Many houses burn down.
And how’d you know your father died?
Carol told me. Gave me a little more for dinner as sympathy.
How does Carol treat you, Eris? [...] Eris. Eris? How does Carol treat you?
Nothing.
Nothing?
She treats me like nothing.
And you’re alright with that?
Anyone would be when they have nothing else.
Did you do something while you were there?
I helped her. She rarely got home early for dinner. So I got to take care of her kids. I cooked for them. Tucked them in bed. I don’t think they had a curfew before, so I tried to give them one. That way they’d get up earlier for school — or whatever they do.
You help them even though they’re not – they’re not your brothers...
I like to try.
What about Carol’s husband?
She had none.
Do you know why she let you stay here, Eris?
She told me it would be better.
It is. You don’t have to cook for anyone here. We’ll take care of you. [...] Did you expect to be here? In the hospital?
No.
No?
I never thought I’d be sick. I thought I’d still be in school.
You like school? You’re doing well with it? [...] That’s great.
Will I be able to go to school?
I’m afraid not, Eris. You’re not well enough, and –
I’ll infect them, right? That’s why I’m here?
Who told you that?
Carol did. She told me I might get her kids sick.
You don’t call her Aunt Carol? Mother?
She doesn’t want me calling her names other than Carol.
Are you alright, Eris? [...] Eris?
Yes. I'm fine.
I hope you enjoy it here. Welcome to the Home.
