The miners were off to work again and Kolton Enim watched from his stall selling peat. His fingers had about frozen off completely and where a glorious tomato red colour they were so cold- he had been standing there since the early hours of the morning setting up to sell the peat that would keep so many families warm this winter- which would keep so many from freezing to death. His breath was like smoke on the wind as he let out a bored breath as the crowd of men slowly vanished down the road- the District was only beginning to wake; soon the town square would be filled with others trying to scrape a living to feed their children. Luckily for Kolton, he had no one else to feed other than himself- a fact he was somewhat regretful for, he wished there was someone else he had to feed but all those he loved were long gone; they were merely ghosts on the wind now.
Kolton stamped his feet and tried to get some warmth into him by jumping about- but his coat was wearing and tearing at the seams and it seemed to let more cold in than it kept out; making it one of the most useless pieces of clothing he had. He had owned gloves, well he did own gloves, but he had given them to the kid he paid to go fetch the peat from the bogs at the edge of the District; the boy was new, the other kid he hired was ill in bed and may die from the illness; or at least that is what Kolton feared. The new boy was younger than the other one- maybe only six- Kolton felt uncomfortable sending someone so young out onto the marsh; particularly after his sister’s death, but the small kid had begged him to let him have a job- his mother was dying or something like that so Kolton had given in. Now, he stood alone in the center of town, waiting patiently for the boy to return with a bag of peat or two; he wasn’t expecting much, perhaps half a bag at the most, the kid was tiny after all- Kolton wouldn’t be too mad if he did only turn up with half of what he wanted.
Someone in the distance there was a constant siren for a few seconds- which signalled the beginning of the work shift in the mines. Around him, people were also beginning to wake up and open up shop; though most had a physical building to sell in, whereas Kolton was out in the cold. He hoped one day he would be able to afford a shop to sell his peat in- In a thousand years he thought; as he watched people who were looking for business begin to settle into the square. With them, they bought Peacekeepers, Kolton had a dislike for peacekeepers- in fact he had a dislike for pretty much anyone and everyone, even himself- and he glanced down as a few passed; he knew he had done nothing wrong, but he feared they would accuse him of something or another and have him killed as his brother had before him. Kolton shifted uncomfortably as he waited for his first customer.
