The silence in the forest, I find, is unerving. Not even the mockingjays sing. They have been silent for days now and I'm not sure why. I look up at the canopy of trees, moonlight filters through the leaves, providing a soft glow of illumination that allows me to travel through the forest safely. My feet are silent as I weave through the shadows of the autumn night and I breathe in the fresh air. Its been a few years now since I last saw my mother and I haven't the slightest of ideas as to where she might be now. Perhaps she has been captured and turned into an avox in the capitol. I hope not and try not to dwell on the idea of her tongue being cut out in the painful procedure. Crickets chirp softly in the undergrowth, a few of them hopping away as I disturb their beautiful songs which are both joyful and sad at the same time.
As night fades to morning, I find myself growing weary of my wandering. In my mind, finding a nice hollow somewhere and curling up for a nap sounds like a good idea but what I think in my mind isn't always the best thing to do. The hollow is damp and drafty, plus frost has settled on the damp floor making it unsuitable for me to sleep on. Feeling disappointed, I continue my search.
By midday, I am stumbling along from exhaustion, my mind unable to stay focused from lack of sleep its had. Finally, I sink down into unconsciousness on a bed of leaves hidden under a large bush of nightlock, sure that the deadly berries will keep all the wild animals away and also many unwanted guests away. I close my eyes and sleep claims me instantly.
When I awaken, the world outside is dark and I must wait a few moments for my eyes to adjust. Once it does, I see that I am not alone. A young buck has wandered near my bush. I silently slip away without frightening the creature. I know I could easily kill it but the thing is that I have no where to put it. Once I'm quite a ways away, I decide to set up camp. I quickly get a small fire going and I eat some game that I'd caught yesterday. Just as I'm tucking into the meat, my eyes dart to the dark, silent forest and for the first time, I realize that I have company. A dark shadow hovers just beyond the light cast by the fire and a shiver of fear courses through me. "Whos' there?" I ask, raising my hunting knife. Then a figure steps into the light.
