Holding the hands of the two younger Avoxes, I walk with them through the crowded City Circle to get to the grocery store. It was raining heavily, and our master had not given us an umbrella. I swear, he must be morbid to ask for young Avoxes. Occasionally a child capitolite glances at us and giggles at the white we must wear. I once tried to ask Master for other clothe,s but he laughed and sent me to bed.
I am twelve, and already my life has been ruined. I not only have to direct the two Avoxes younger than me every waking second, but I also have to take care of three troublesome triplets the same age as Abby. Maybe I should feel sorry for these two holding my hands, but in a way I'm just not sure. What if one was a murderess? However unlikely that might be, I had no way of knowing if they were innocent or not.
Suddenly, Abby breaks free of my grip and runs into a clearing. I almost scream at her.

It was my idea to dance. I got tired of walking with Sophie, so I did what Alice, my big sister and I used to do when it rained. When I look back, I notice Sophie is flaming red and looking around to make sure peacekeepers didn't notice. I know that because she is always writing to me about them. She taught me how to write.
I hear the laughter of a few capitolites, and feel happy they have not noticed my white tunic yet. It's under my coat, which is brown. and long. My dancing isn't good, but they think it's funny. I hear the splashing of puddles as Silence decides to join me, and the duck sound slurs as I try to giggle.

I run after Abby, after three minutes of struggling to get away from big Sophie. My name is Silence, and I'm four now. I actually turned four about a month ago, isn't that fun? Sophie is a big girl and she can be mean sometimes, but Abby is my best friend now. I can't talk to them but Sophie keeps grabbing my hand and putting a stick in it at bedtime. I usually fall asleep.
"Get that avox under controle!" someone shouts as Abby grabs my hand and starts dancing with me. I get confused, and frightened, run back to Sophie and bury my face in her dress. Abby soon follows, a big mean guy shoving her against me and Sophie. He yells something at Sophie then walks away. Sophie smacks Abby on the head and pops my hand so I start to cry, but it hurts my throat.
