Anise Howell
Age: 18
Gender: Female
District: 6
Appearance: Anise is a simple girl in personality and the way she lives her life, but her appearance is striking. Her eyes are her most unique feature. They are a dark onyx black, and slightly slanted. They are almost always blank, as she goes about the day without much difference from an average routine, but when she is paying attention, they light up her face. Anise also has curly red hair that falls well past her shoulders. She tries not to be vain, but she does love her hair, especially the color, and takes good care of it to keep it healthy and soft.
Her skin is pale, even though she spends a lot of time outdoors. Her hands are rough and calloused from hard work, and her face often seems ashy because of the smoke from the fires she always has burning in her house. Anise dresses in plain clothes, normally wearing simple black or gray T-shirts and jeans. She can also be seen wearing gloves a lot, to protect her hands from some of the more potent plants she grows in her garden.
Personality: Anise is a very quiet person most of the time, and she keeps to herself. She doesn’t speak unless spoken to, and goes about her work methodically, every day. She has a set routine, and that’s the way she likes it. Changing the schedule makes her day off-balance. The only difference is when it comes to medicine, and her work, which she’s very passionate about. She is a healer, but don’t you dare call her a doctor. She doesn’t use medicine; in fact she thinks it will make you worse to use medicine. She makes herbal brews, remedies, and restoratives. She grows most of the ingredients in her garden, makes everything at her home, and sells it to anyone she can convince about the evils of medicine.
In her mind, Anise is one hundred percent right about how her home remedies are better than medicine, and she’s proud of it. People often laugh, tell her she’s wrong, call her crazy, but she keeps her head held high. She’ll never quit making and selling her brews, as long as she’s alive.
When people are able to look past the craziness that is quite apparent at first, though, they see that she is actually a good person. While her methods are drastic, her heart is in the right place. She really cares about people, and is passionate about healing. She would do anything to help someone who needs one of her remedies, even if it is not always profitable for her.
History: Anise always believed that medicine was wrong, and home remedies would really heal people. She was taught this by her mother, who was taught by her mother, and so on and so forth; but Anise’s history doesn’t start with her. It starts with Clara and Lucas Howell. When they first married, they seemed like the perfect family, even more so when their daughter, Anise, was born. Their marriage soon began to go downhill, however. Clara became more and more obsessed with making her brews, trying to convince people to give up medicines from doctors. She believed that the chemicals in medicine was actually dangerous for people, she thought she was helping them. Little did she know she was pushing Lucas away. He soon left Clara and their two year old daughter to fend for themselves.
Anise was raised making brews, growing the gardens, things such as anise, her namesake, and even more potent plants, like wolf’s bane, and tending fires all day, boiling the different plants into cures. She helped her mother in the shop, and by the age of ten, had mastered the different plants that most people never learned in their entire lifetime.
Seems like a good life right? Her happy little family, running a shop, doing what she loved. It was much more complicated than that. Every since her husband left her, Clara Howell had been grief-stricken. After closing up the shop, she worked tirelessly to find some way to cure her depression. She mixed all kinds of things together, making remedies that didn’t even make sense, in her panic to heal herself. She eventually overdosed and became very sick. Anise tried her best to take care of her, but to no avail. Her mother died, and left her small home, her garden, and her shop to her fifteen year old daughter. Three years later, Anise still constantly works to carry on her mother’s legacy in the shop. She knows she will always be making her remedies, as long as she lives, and will eventually pass on her knowledge to her own children.
