There's no time to second guess it

I don't know my last name. The caretakers tell me that I didn't have one. They say I didn't even have a first name when I arrived on the battered doorstep of the rundown orphanage in District Nine. For all they know, I could have been President Snow's own son. They named me Alek and took me in, as they were bound by their occupation to do, though I'm sure there are times today when they regret it. I've been at the orphanage for sixteen years now, and no one adopts me. No one even bothers to see me. In everyone's eyes I'm the weird kid who talks to animals like they're people, and hangs out on the streets. Certainly not the cute, sweet, cuddly kind of child one would want in their own home, though no one ever admits it that bluntly. "He's not our type," they say when the caretakers inquire.

Maybe that's why I like the dogs so much. They aren't anyone's type, either.
