Cassandrine was starving. Not literally starving - not as she had seen some of the children doing in other parts of the district, not as she heard almost everyone in some of the poorer districts suffered- no, just feeling slightly faint after a long long day with little on her stomach. The smells from the center of town were churning her stomach, "Eat me, eat me!" each of the foods in the windows seemed to be crying. Funny, because now she could smell the food even over the constant smog of the nearby factories.
Soup- a delicious bowl of soup with fresh bread at the bakery. That seemed splendid. But wait, wait - porridge with a bit of fruit chopped up into it. Fruit - such an expensive luxury, but so worth it! Choices, choices. Staring around blankly, trying to give a thought as to what she might possibly want, Cassandrine rattled the coins in her hand. 'Well if I get the soup now, I should have enough money for a half loaf to bring home.' Thinking how her sisters, particularly Kiri, would enjoy a fresh loaf of bread - particularly if it was that one with cheese and herbs- Cassandrine entered the bakery, already impatient to get started on her meal.
"I'll have whatever smells so good," she announced to the owner upon entering, and within seconds the steaming bowl of soup was hers. It was a bit runny for her taste- but sausage and a bit of peas! Oh, it smelled to die for! Gladly, she forked over the money, gathered the bowl and the half loaf, and took a seat in one of the small tables by the window.
Dipping the bread - some sort of honey wheat, shame the cheese loaves were out- into the soup, she stared thoughtfully out at the people passing by, wondering what each of them was doing today. It was too pretty to be just heading off to work.
