Age: 16
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 7
Appearance:
Nomey is a tall, thin, young woman. She stands 5'8" with black hair shortly cropped in a jagged cut that's always in a state of disarray around her heart shaped face. She is not heavy or too thin, but long in the arms and legs which gives her her height. Her elegant limbs are covered in scars and blemishes from the woods. Her long black lashes are always hiding her amber and brown flecked eyes from the world. Nomey's eyes run in her family, as does her physical stature.Personality:
Nomey's sun tanned skin is not uncommon through the district, but it makes her pink scars stand out. She has a small pink scar just below her right eye from a bee sting. She is sometimes mistaken for a boy and the fact that she mostly wears hand-me-downs from her two older brothers doesn't help. Neither does her short hair and her tendency to keep her head down. Most day's she wears a pair of old hand-me-down boots, a plain, black, button down shirt, and ratty cargo pants. On the rare occasion that she doesn't have chores to do, she can be seen in one of her mothers sun dresses disappearing into the trees of district 7 not to be seen again for hours.
Nomey is a resilient young woman. She has trust issues. She's seen people lie and die for their causes and she thinks that, while there are many good people left in the world, there are far more snakes to watch out for. Usually her coldness toward people can be taken as harsh and it tends to make people dislike her. She's watched her family and district mates struggle with so many obstacles that it has made her strong and enduring and stubborn and proud to be who she is. Her temper is quick to snap but she usually apologizes right away for fear of hurting others. Her heart is always getting her in trouble.History:
Nomey is well known with the kids in school, not because she's friends with them, but because people know her story. They know that she's strange and always seems distant. They know that, like her father, she protects those weaker than her and often volunteers to take the blame when someone must be punished. Not that any of them understand why. Otherwise Nomey has a shy streak. She often sits quietly as others talk and is content not to jump in. She often retreats into her own head fantasizing or blocking out things that grate at her heart, like watching her father struggle to work a rope with only one hand.
She's haunted by the reaping, watching the capitol steal two of her school mates each year. The thought of seeing the inside of the arena petrifies her. Mostly she keeps her thoughts in the clouds far, far, away from district seven, in a place where she and her family are free. Her day dreaming often makes her miss things like people talking to her. People just see her as strange and she doesn't mind that so much. She would rather not talk to most people anyway.
When Nomey was just a little girl she was happy. She had her job of clearing the table, washing the family's clothes, and getting things ready for her brothers and father for work. She seemed so careless in those days. they had it better than most in district seven.Codeword: odair
Her father ran the paper plant where as many in the district labored in the lumber yards. They had a decent life with her fathers wages. they didn't want
for food as many of the other families did. Her brothers were fortunate enough to gain positions in the paper mill when they became of age.
When Nomey was 9 years old, her father was in an accident at the paper plant that made him loose his right arm from the elbow down. Her family began to struggle. Even with both of her brothers working, they could not afford their father's medicines and they were assigned another house at the far south end of the district where more of the less fortunate of the district lived. She never complained. She was
happy that her father was alive.
When Nomey was thirteen she watched a boy in the square get hung for stealing plums from the orchard. he lived next door to her. He was twelve years old.
The peace keepers said his mother was part of the resistance and Nomey watched as they not only
hung the boy but beat his mother to death afterward. That was the first time she had even heard the word "resistance" out loud. After watching the grisly scene she began to distrust people.
Her care free life turned to worry over how her family would get by. She took up a job in the orchard collecting damaged fruit from the crops to make jellies and jams. She would go to school in the mornings to learn about her district and its many jobs and traditions and when the bell rang she would make the long trek through town to the orchards where she would work till the sun went down.
Eventually her and her brothers had to take out a tresserae for each of the family members adding
to their chances of being called in the reaping. It broke her mothers heart to sell her children's survival for food to keep them alive. They weren't the only ones. Many in district seven took out extra tresserae's for their families. It was common practice.
Now 16 Nomey is a girl with a determination to keep her family alive. They still struggle on their small allowances of grain and oil, but now with all three
of the children working things have become a little easier. Their father has started making goods from home, Tannin and medicines from bark. He has even made ropes and other things for people out of the barks of trees that are mostly dis-guarded on the capitols orders or made into mulch and tilled back into the ground.
Nomey's mother is a gentile woman who has been hardened after a life time of district 7 living. She was born with two bum legs that she wears braces on so that she can hobble around the house. She stays home and cooks and cleans but there is something else her mother does that no one is supposed to know about. No one ever talks about it and the peace keepers have never caught on yet, but her mother makes deliriants. Tinctures made from plants that others take as drugs. Hallucinogens that many of the lumber workers take at the end of their day to forget about where they actually are.
Stranded to work their lives away in district seven.
Comments/Other:
Nomey is the fastest runner in her school and she is no stranger to trees. She can tell you what kind they are and what can be made from them without blinking an eye. She can also climb the tallest of trees regardless of if they have limbs or not. In the schools of district seven most kids are taught to be architects, so Nomey knows how to build things.
She's particularly good at making and using rope as her father constantly has some around the house for selling. She knows well how to make poison and food from trees and their sap but she is squeamish around wild animals never having seen many besides birds and possums.
