Melanie Flores - District 10

Looking at Melanie, it's not hard to see that she is a little different than most kids her age here in District 10, the livestock district. She is average height, about 5'4. She has a slightly stocky frame, not fat necessarily, but a little overweight. She dyes her hair jet black to match most of her clothes. Although her style makes her look a little scary, she's actually pretty nice.

The most distinct thing about her is her unique style. She dresses in black, mostly long sleeve shirts. She has many piercings. In the Capitol it may be normal, perhaps, but in an outlying district such as District 10 it is far from it. She loves to adorn herself with necklaces and bracelets, and she always wears jeans with extremely skinny legs.

Melanie has always tried to give others the benefit of the doubt and be nice to them, as long as they deserved to be treated so. However, a lot of people never gave her the same respect. She often gets teased and treated rudely because of her different appearance and interests. For that very reason, she has grown used to not having many friends and being alone a lot. She would rather stay true to who she is rather than become someone that others want her to be.

Melanie has grown a hard heart through her teenage years from spending so much time alone. Everyone automatically thinks she is weird, although she really isn't that much different. She doesn't talk or act different. She just looks different. And that is enough to drive everyone away, apparently.

She is fortunate enough to have a close knit family that are just like her. They love to have fun, are a bit odd, quite intelligent, and treated differently than everyone else. But, thankfully, that's all they need. She used to want things to be different. She used to want to be admired. She used to want attention from her peers. But, looking back, she really wanted what she has now. Very few close friends and a lot of strangers.

Melanie has always considered herself fortunate for what she has in District 10, one of the poorest districts in all of Panem, even if it's not much. She can't afford the nice clothes, and sometimes she only gets one meal a day. To her, though, it's a blessing. Although she is unique and looks like she would fit in better as a Capitol resident, she absolutely despises them. What kind of sick mind enjoys the deaths of children?

Melanie's very sensitive about the Games. Long, long ago her aunt was reaped, and the odds were not in her favor. She was killed by a sick Gamemaker trap. Melanie has always vowed to somehow avenge her fallen family. She would do whatever it takes to shut this sick game down for good.

In her early years, Melanie stuck out quick as one of the most intelligent youthful minds of the district. She came out of intermediate school at the top of her class. She has always dreamed of using her brain to improve all of Panem. In the meantime, however, she uses her intellectual abilities and large vocabulary to write a number of poems and stories, some of which have spread across District 10. Her poems are a way to reach out and show people what she is really about, because they don't seem to give her much of a chance when talking to her. Her poems are her greatest accomplishment.
