[/i] Perfectly fine.A boy. Mother invited a boy over for dinner.
In all honesty, Lethe Turner was not at all surprised. Mother, her sweet, pressuring Mother, would go to any embarrassing, ridiculous lengths to secure her victorious daughter a husband especially now that she was a mother herself. Often times, Lethe found herself sighing deeply and dropping her shoulders as she told her mother over and over that she and Eden were fine with just the two of them and well, no, she hasn’t seen him, Eden’s father in a while, but…but, she’d swallow hard, trying to fight the hot tears in her eyes now, but we’re doing perfectly fine.
And we don’t need some other boy butting in and disrupting things, Mother.
But, Lethe didn’t say anything of the kind. She swallowed down Eric’s face and obediently went to curl her hair and zip herself into one of her nice dresses. She’d only break Mother’s heart by refusing and Mother was just doing what was best for her. A single mother and a Victor too? Not a desirable image. Lethe could only imagine what the Capitol magazines wrote about her and her cheeks burned as she swiped some mascara over her eyelashes. Oh, Lethe, are you happy?[/i] he’d asked as he held their daughter in his arms and she’d smiled then, smiled, really, smiled…but now, the creases on Lethe’s forehead deepened as she frowned. No, I’m not. Not without you. For Eden, for our daughter. She needs you.
I only care for our daughter. If,[/i] Lethe’s stomach fluttered, I don’t matter much to you, at least care for her, our daughter. If I don’t matter much to you (enough that you don’t call, don’t contact, don’t try, please, Eric, try), then you don’t matter to me. But, Eden…[/i]
By six o’clock, Lethe had laced her darling child into a new dress and set her in her high chair. Her heart was beating rapidly. Previously, she’d shrugged off this new boy. She’d tolerate it. Make small talk. Smile falsely. As a Victor, she did it enough. And then, gently, ever-so-gently, she’d refuse any further advances no matter how kind he was. No man is more father to a child than her own. Even if he wasn’t present in her life.
Still, when the doorbell rang, Lethe’s heart skipped an entire beat. Just beyond that slab of wood was a boy, no, a man, a potential suitor. A man who wanted to take her hand, her heart, perhaps not just for the glory, maybe because he watched her on television and found her beautiful and thought of her and Lethe’s heart should flutter and her cheeks should burn, but here on the other side that that slab of wood was a hardened girl, already shrugging him off.
For Eden, Lethe reminded herself as she walked stiffly towards the door. Ring, ring, ring went the doorbell and Lethe put her hand to that slab of wood, took a deep breath and opened it to see…
Jasper.
Lethe’s heart stopped completely now. Oh. [/i][/color]
